Rating: Summary: An easy, fun read Review: This is a funny book. If you happen to have liked collecting insects, you'll love this. Action abounds.
Rating: Summary: Read this book now Review: This book's cover is what caught my attention and I thought that the synopsis on the back was funny. After I started reading, I could not put it down. Fitzhugh created characters who are off-kilter but that the reader can also identify with. He is like a funnier version of Elmore Leonard.
Rating: Summary: Less funny than it thinks it is Review: The idea of a perfectly ordinary man who is mistaken for a killer for hire was used with considerable fortune in the movie "El Mariachi": in this book we have again an ordinary guy (a roach exterminator in this case) mistaken for a world-class assassin, but the results are not as interesting. After a while the whole thing becomes quite predictable and tiresome, and not really very funny. The intrigue seems to be based upon everybody's incredible stupidity, and, yeah, right, I know that his is supposed to be a kind of cartoon, light fare, but even cartoons need to have some cartoonish logic to be fun; with this book suspension of disbelief is needed by the cartload. Klaus is in fact the only interesting character; one wishes he was the protagonist instead of the comparatively dull Bob. All in all I should say it is not incredibly boring, but if I have to make a recommendation, rent "El Mariachi" instead (I mean the real movie, not that silly remake with Antonio Banderas). It is not funny either, but it is a very good movie.
Rating: Summary: Talk about a bug's life... Review: Who would have thought a bunch of insecticidal bugs could make such a compelling comic thriller? Pest Control is very funny and you can see why Warner Brothers wants to make a movie from this book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a sense of humor. Go to the author's website (Billfitzhugh.com) and read about some of the other stuff he's done.
Rating: Summary: This is....humor? Review: I read the author's comment, and he sounds like a nice guy. As a writer, my own skin is not as thick as it should be, but I still have to say this book was terrifically unfunny. Maybe I've been reading too much Woody Allen and Douglas Adams, I don't know. I was actually kind of, well, horrified, at the lack of humor in a supposedly humorous novel, but everyone's opinion is different, and maybe the fault lies with me. Not that I have any other faults.
Rating: Summary: Funny stuff - over the top Review: Mix Prizzi Honor with arachnophobia and you have some idea as to how the story progresses. I found the tale to be a page turner and hilarious to boot. I read alot of pulp fiction type novels to fill long commutes and only a few live up to the hype of their back covers. This is one of them. I think it would make a great movie, a black comedy with a happy ending
Rating: Summary: The stereotypes might 'bug' a New Yorker, but it's great. Review: As a New Yorker, I found a few of the NYC sterotypes a bit over the top, but the story is histerical. I think I flew threw this book in a weeks worth of subway rides, and found myself missing it's comedy by the time I was done. Now I am reading Fitzhugh's second novel "Organ Grinders" and the pleasure continues. Great new novelist, give it a shot.
Rating: Summary: Laugh-out-loud funny!! Review: The book caught my eye because of the cover, so I flipped it over to read what it was about. The synopsis on the back alone made me laugh so I figured "What the heck?" I'm glad I did. This book was hilarious. I'm trying to push it on to all my friends and family so I can crack jokes and have them know what I'm talking about.
Rating: Summary: Who knew assassin bugs could be so funny? Review: I picked this book up for a light read by the pool. I found myself laughing so hard that reading it in public was no longer an option. My family has now read it and we each found it too funny to keep to ourselves. Though the premise of the book seemed interesting, the likelihood that it was possible seemed remote. The author was able to use what must have been extensive entomology research to make the situation seem believable. At the same time, the twists and turns of the book left me laughing out loud. I found the book entertaining. I couldn't put it down! I'm anxious for Fitzhugh's next offering.
Rating: Summary: It was a great book. Review: I read this book for an English class. The beginning is pretty slow, but as you read on, you discover it is a very entertaining novel, with comedic irony in every chapter.
