Rating: Summary: I can't put the book down! I want to read more! Review: Here we got a down and out guy. Trying to make ends meet in killing bugs. Only to be mistaken for a real killer. Bob Dillen's world turned for the worst, only to become friends with a real killer who has a code to kill.
Rating: Summary: Humorous and technically accurate book. Review: Fairly easy read. Enjoyed the analogies presented and the historical information provided. Mr. Fitzhugh did his homework concerning entomolgy. I was impressed.Although somewhat predictable this novel was humorous and light reading. I could see this being a made for TV movie. Being a PCO (Pest Control Operator) I have a certain appreciation for this novel and we advertise "Pest Control" on our web site; TritonPC.com.
Rating: Summary: Talk about some misunderstandings! Review: "Pest Control" was one of the best books I have read this year, combining science and humor, plus a little suspense and a lot of action. Big misunderstandings and incorrectly interpreted body language (wink wink nudge nudge) make for a unique situation for our intrepid "exterminator."
Rating: Summary: Rush out and read it... Review: I thought this was one of the greatest, most funniest, and thrilling books I ever read. I think every fiction-thrilling-comedy-loving-bookworm will absolutely love this book.....I know I did!!!
Rating: Summary: Funniest, laugh-out-loud book I've ever read!! Review: This book was a blast to read, super characters, great laughs all the way through, Bob Dillon and Klaus are the perfect "bumbling exterminator pair", in a race to evade the most bizarre bunch of fumbling, outrageous hitmen and FBI agents ever put to print. I suggest that Jim Carrey play Bob and Sean Connery play Klaus in the movie - one that I would see!! AN ABSOLUTE MUST TO READ!!
Rating: Summary: An offbeat ride Review: The tale of Bob Dillon and his escapades in and around New York City show a very funny, quirky new genre of book, the offbeat, violent, funny tales of common people thrust into the world of crime. Others, such as The Death and Life of Bobby Z, also help herald this hilarious genre into the mainstream. The tale is full of violence, but mostly the Bugs Bunny violence, our unwitting hero accidently avoiding danger and causing his persuers outrageous harm. This tale of bugs and mayhem is defintely worth the read.
Rating: Summary: Offbeat and a lot of fun Review: Reading some of the descriptions of the bugs gave me the creeps but it also gave me a new respect for bugs. I like books that educate as well as entertain. I definitely found this one entertaining. It's not the best book ever written, there are some slow spots, but it's still a lot of fun. If you like situation comedy, you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: Flirting with Success Review: This book is much like it's hero, Bob Dillon, a good natured exterminator from Queens who aspires to an off-beat greatness, but never quite acheives it. In this process, however, he becomes accidentily embroiled in the the colorful world of professional assasination. Although solidly goofy entertainment and fairly funny at times, it does show quite a lot of sitcom formulaicness, and has occaisional dry spots, just as Bob, although a decent, lovable chacterization still suffers from an occaisional bit of cardboard sterotypical emotyness. Even Fitzhugh's prose to seems to follow Bob's slight lack in realisticness; it is generally up-beat and clean, and the dialog, while not exactly DeLillo, still manages to sound distinctly tailored for each character and produces a varied, New York sound to the book, but sometimes, it is overly stylized, or, as in the case of one character, Klaus, the speech sounds uncomfortable and too stiff. Fitzpaugh shows a general talent for making the absurd if not appear plausible, then at least real enough to suspend your disbelief, but, again, there are times when he seems to have over stepped his reach, and the novel developes an occaisional cartoonish quality because of it. He also sometimes misses his comedic mark, expecting hyperkinectivity to stand for genuine humor. To his credit, the author does prove himself to be quite knowledgable on many subjects ranging from popular music to entomology, just as Bob also establishes himself. "Pest Control" while showing a good deal of promise never quite fufills it's destiny. It manages to pull above mediocrity, though, due to it's lovable characters and good natured humor, constantly flirting with success.
