Rating: Summary: Dull Review: This was my first and probably last Baldacci book. I know this author is very popular but after struggling thru this snoozer, I can't imagine why. Very "by the formula" thriller, lovely heroine in danger, dashing hero saves her. Nasty villian, corrupt government officials, snore....I felt I'd read this book a hundred times before, and it's been done better. Don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Hey David - get a new editor ! Review: Don't waste your money on this boring, predictable and very disappointing Baldacci effort. You will not connect with the characters, the plot is slow to develop without much in the way of surprise, and the arcane details of lobbying in D.C. are already known to all. Baldacci has tons of talent - but he needs a better edit job - someone to tell him when something obviously does not work so he won't go on for 50 page tangents that don't enhance the story. Dave, get a hard-nosed editor, and send the manuscript around to opinionated SOB's who will give it to you straight.
Rating: Summary: Minor effort from a major leaguer Review: David, David, where are you and are you coming back soon? Saving Faith is a rushed and clunky effort compared to the tightly constructed, well-scripted previous Baldacci novels. Many of the story's devices are implausible, beginning with the crux of the story. Faith rats out her employer, a professed father figure, on a flimsy pretense and the story sinks from there. Baldacci uses his well-earned best-seller status to hop on his soapbox, albeit for a worthy cause, but the result feels forced. Baldacci has spent years honing his craft and until this point, I've enjoyed the fruits of his labors. He needs to LABOR once again, instead of shooting off a rough draft to make his publishers happy. It seems to be a common trap among best-selling authors, (Patricia Cornwall and Southern Exposure!, Ken Follet and Hammer of Eden, Steven King (too many clunkers to mention, etc.) Baldacci said in a seminar that this book was very different from his past novels, and it is. It stinks.
Rating: Summary: Baldacci Stock Plummets Review: I should have heeded the other posts. No, I gave weight to the Amazon review which led one to believe this was much better than it indeed was. Do not disregard your fellow readers. Do not purchase. Don't even waste a library loan on this. Buy something else by Baldacci or another author.
Rating: Summary: Corbel Book Club Review: Generally our book club members found this book difficult to follow. The beginning was very slow, and we agree with a previous reviewer's opinion that there were too many initials (FBI, CIA, etc) that added to the confusion. A few of us who are fans of spy/detective novels, loved this book for it's fast paced action. We have decided that we might like the movie better in this case. A couple of surprises but overall it was a predictable read. We did not like the ending. Most of our members would not recommend this book to friends, and would definitely not read it again.
Rating: Summary: Not quite Ludlum, bur getting there Review: I started this year by reading Baldacci's The Simple Truth and finished by reading Saving Faith.Like Ludlum he stretches belief, but if you regard it as entertainment there is no harm in that.He has no hang ups other than to write a rattling good read of the unput downable he has succeeded. He obviously did some research into the workings of Americas two leading secret service organisations. If only some of what he writes carries a tad of truth, then I should be worried. Having read all his novels I look forward to his next with anticipation.
Rating: Summary: Baldacci does it again! Review: David Baldacci has found Tom Clancy's nack for detail...and this book is no exception. Like his other books, a fast moving, page turner. His research is superb and you might say scary if that is the way Washington works and I suspect there is some truth to his story (you might even make this book non-fiction!). He does a good job of developing the characters. He will continue to be a must read in my library.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing - Contrived and Completely Predictable Review: I had high hopes for Baldacci's latest based on online consumer reviews and on professional critiques of his earlier work. The best indicator of my post-read opinion (other than the title of this review) is the fact that, rather than pass the book on to a friend, I left it in the hotel room where I finished the novel while taking a short vacation. Problem 1: If the villain had been any more evil and unlikable, he would have resembled an old Sunday morning cartoon character like Wile E. Coyote or Snidely Whiplash. Look, I know it's fiction, but can't I expect even a modicum of plausibility? Problem 2: Once Baldacci had described the hero and heroine, I could have written the rest of the book for him, with only marginally less impressive results. I certainly knew how the book would end (although my own ending was more creative than Baldacci's), and I easily forecast most of the trials and tribulations these characters experienced. Honestly, by the midpoint, I was feeling as if I'd wasted over $, and found finishing the book more an exercise in self-discipline than a run towards an exciting and enjoyable finish.
Rating: Summary: A weak plot Review: Being a Baldacci fan I was quite disappointed by Saving Faith. I think that the premise of the plot, a lobbyst turns to corrupting U.S. lawmakers to help third-world populations, is quite unbelivable. The best part of the book is the relationship between Faith and Lee while both the Tornhill and the Buchanan characters are not well defined. The second part of the book is quite predictable and there are no surprises as in Baldacci's previous books.
Rating: Summary: It was okay Review: I'm still confused on how Faith and Danny did what they did. Not much character developement and suspending disbelief seems to be a major prerequisite for this book (and the narrator was horrible). But there are a few surprises and not much else. Overall, not a very memorable story.
