Rating: Summary: Awe Inspiring Review: What a TREASURE we have found in Trevor. How simple, pure, and fulfilling life would be if we all just decided to DO WHAT TREVOR DID and PAY IT FORWARD! How about it? .... I Will...
Rating: Summary: If only this could happen Review: The theme that our actions affect others, good or bad, is one that is rarely seen in fiction. In this book, it makes the plot impossible to predict and the book difficult to describe, but fun to read. Sometimes the shift in voice is distracting, but it does bring the reader closer to the characters. This is a quick read that you will be thinking about after.
Rating: Summary: Impressive Review: Pay it Forward is an extremely impressive under-taking. The thought of one 12 year old boy changing the world is enough to make even the most optimistic person gawfaw. Yet somehow it makes it through that wall. This book gives me hope. I believe it can happen. Our world can be a better place. Catherine Hyde has given us the blueprint. Everyone who reads this book can become Trevor. Given the buzz surrounding this book and the upcoming movie it surely won't take very long.I have had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Hyde and I can tell you that all the wonderful qualities of Pay it Forward are personified in her. I absolutely cannot wait for her next work. Catherine, world peace, perhaps?
Rating: Summary: Magnolia, the book... Review: This book reminds me of the movie Magnolia. A semi-interesting story about unusual "characters", punctuated by a highly implausible, out-of-the-blue ending. The innocent, direct, and always to-the point, Trevor, a pre-teen boy, decides to try a simple experiment to change the world. It's the kind of sweetly optimistic answer to the world's problems that many Americans will immediately take to heart. Sentiment and logic are two mighty different things, my friends, and this idea isn't likely to work any better than good cop John C. Reilly's bumbling attempt to reform coke-head Melora Walters in Magnolia. There are no frogs in this book, but there's enough croaking at the end to make you think so.
Rating: Summary: Read This Book! Review: I am a cynical person. I am a pessimist. I'm not the type of person that would fall for a book like this. But I did. When you read the synopsis of this book, you may think that it's cheezy, light reading. It's not. Sure, it's easy to read and predictable at times. But the overall message runs deep. Everyone in the world should read this book. It means something. The movie is coming out later this year or next starring Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment (the little boy from The Sixth Sense). This could be big.
Rating: Summary: Pay it forward..........If only we could Review: Sitting next to a book I had planned to purchase, the cover of Pay It Forward caught my attention. I read the summary and decided I had to read this book... I am so glad I purchased it. Sure it is a little unrealistic to think a boy could change the world with a school assignment. However, I think we need to look deeper..."He" didn't really change the world, he just put the gears in motion. Just the thought that something like that could happen on even a small scale is refreshing in this day and age. Couldn't it happen within a community? A church? A school? I participate in an e-mail group and plan to use this book in a round robin so that others may enjoy it and have some food for thought.
Rating: Summary: wonderfully hopeful story Review: I too bought this book because of it's beautiful cover. What I found inside was an equally beautiful story about life and all of it's ups and downs. How sometimes what we see as the truth is not the truth, and how we can change the world with some very simple changes in our dealings with others, both those who are familiar to us and those we would consider strangers. I LOVED THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY!
Rating: Summary: A decent read... Review: I picked up this book because it had a pretty cover. Looks can be deceiving...the story line is ok, the people hard to identify with. They are all the same, with the same thoughts and blah blah blah. Ms. Hyde really could have developed them better...and a boy changing the world because of one extra-credit assignment? Get real. Although the idea is a good one, the book could have been written better.
Rating: Summary: Pass It On! Review: I was looking for a book about the human situation that still believed there is a form of redemption we are capable of demonstrating. I was looking for a story that said hope is worth holding on to. Someone recommended "Pay It Forward" to me, and I am glad they did. This is a lovely story. It has characters I can care about - although I must admit I felt frustrated with Reuben and Arlene as they struggled in their relationship with each other, but realized they had a lot of obstacles to overcome - especially the lessons about learning to trust themselves and each other. I have recommended this book to three friends with the stipulation that they each tell three other friends about it, and so on and so on... I will recommend it to many more, including young readers.
Rating: Summary: NEVER Judge A Book By It's Cover! Review: In reality, the premise of this book is full of "sappy" potential. I mean really, a little boy changes the world because of a homework assignment? But the idea is handled with such honesty and skill that it overcomes any potential for it to be silly or sappy. The characters are honest, flawed and FAR from perfect - and nothing comes out perfectly for anyone. But the book is wonderfully readable, the characters sympathetic and absorbing. And the last 10 to 20 pages should not be read without a box of tissue nearby. I am already planning to buy more copies of PAY IT FORWARD for friends, and relatives, anyone who would like to believe that one small act of kindness (or three) could possibly change the world.
