Summary: Why do this to Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino fans?
Review: Is it just me or does the tall, handsome, daredevil Kurt Austin appear exactly like the tall, handsome, daredevil Dirk Pitt? And is it just me or did the short, strong, sidekick Joe Zavala appear exactly like the short, strong sidekick Al Giordino. A feeble attempt to introduce new characters who are exactly like the old ones. Don't get me wrong, I like Dirk and Al. But this is a bit silly.

Summary: We need dirk and al back!
Review: This book lacked all of the literary plot and depth that made all other of Cussler's books a success. The suspense was lacking, the new young characters seemed stale already, and the threat of the opposition was too easily thwarted. We need something that threatens the world, we need more womanizing, we need more cars, we need Dirk and AL!

Summary: Thoroughly entertaining!
Review: If you're looking for pure escapist adventure with a bit of romance, archaeology, history and plenty of action in every chapter then Clive Cussler has delivered the goods once again! This book starts off with an attempted robbery in the cargo hold of the ANDREA DORIA as it sinks. THen we move forward to 2000, where NUMA's latest heroes, Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala discover the secret behind the cargo, and along the way get plunged into an intriguing plot revolving around Columbus, archaeologists mysteriously being killed, lost Maya treasure and of course a dash of romance - enter Nina Kirov. But who is behind the deaths and what is the significance of an undiscovered Maya pyramid in a lake in Guatemala? Cussler also includes old favourites such as Admiral Sandecker and St Julian Perlmutter, and Dirk and Al make an appearance. Overall, I can't see why people rated this one star. This book is as superb as a Dirk Pitt adventure, introducing some new characters and keeping the formula going for new generations of readers. I'm looking forward to the next Dirk Pitt book, ATLANTIS FOUND with keen interest! Well done Clive Cussler!

Summary: This would be funny if it weren't so pathetic
Review: What a load of hokey trash. Clive Cussler's earlier books were bad enough to be laughable. This one is worse. Apparently, Cussler has tired of actually writing books, so now he lets someone else write them and puts his name on them. It's sloppy, too. I mean, he has his hero loading up his ".375 Magnum" revolver with ".50 caliber" rounds. Give me a break.

Summary: Junk
Review: Don't bother. Foolish plot, tepid and trite dialog, weak suspense.

Summary: Another fast-paced, action packed thriller even without Dirk
Review: I shouldn't have worried that this book didn't feature the renouned Dirk Pitt. All the elements that make a Clive Cussler book hard to but down are there. The pace starts quickly and ends with a thrilling dive on another fated ocean liner! Five stars for Mr. Cussler's newest NUMA duo.

Summary: Long winded and a hard read
Review: Prior to buying the book I knew that Dirk and Al would not feature as the heroes, so I was not disappointed in that regard. However the plot was non existent and it took ages to get be introduced to the future heroes. The characters were paper thin, hopefully this will be fixed in future books. It was hard enough adapting to life without Dirk and Al but to have 5-6 new characters introduced in one book was even more confusing. I did enjoy the book, but not for one minute is it up to Mr Cusslers standard - I am assuming he did not have much to do with the actual book other than lending his name and NUMA to the title.

Don't let me put you off a readable book, but do not expect to finish it in one or two days, take a week.

Summary: As good as any Dirk Pitt adventure
Review: I've read all of Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels and "Serpent" by Paul Kemprecos ranks with the best. The characters parallel Dirk and Al, yet Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala are truly unique. I loved the historical fiction aspects of the novel and the Mayan Indian settings. It was a fun, fast and furious read and I look forward to the next one. Don't get me wrong. Al and Dirk are at the center of my adventure-loving heart, but Kurt and Joe were a good "sugar" substitute while I await Cussler's next Dirk Pitt adventure.Web Tucker

Summary: Good Beach Book - But don't analyze the plot, too many holes
Review: The theme of the started out interesting, but somehow it faded as the book progressed. I've read other books by Clive Cussler and enjoyed them. "Serpent" was good if you turned off the intellectual portion of your brain and ignored the pieces of the plot that were missing. I felt as though the book stopped rather than ended; but I had fun reading this book (until I got to the end). This book was not as good as other books written by the author.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Marginal reading. Not what was expected
Review: This book was a type of style from Clive Clusser but not written by him. It does not contain the people or lives of his normal characters. It was quite a suprise to realize that Clive Clusser has just put his name on a book that someone else is trying to mimic his style and main thrust of his writting. A COMPLETE disappointment to be tricked. It was written to the quality of a normal Clive Clusser book.
