Summary: Disappointing...
Review: I, like many people, look forward to each new Cussler book. I was a bit surprised to find out that Dirk Pitt had been "retired", but I thought I would give the book a try. I felt there was too much archeological detail and it dragged on and on... I normally finish a Cussler novel in a couple of days, this one took weeks! Please bring us back Dirk and Al... We miss them!

Summary: This work sucks techno wind
Review: Not only are the grammatical errors a problem, but the incorrect technical stuff can drive anyone with half a brain insane. There was no such culture as the Mayans - it's Mayas. Look it up. The research on this work stunk and the premise was weak. The key villian would have to be a bastard child if he were from Spanish heritage with Maya ancestory - think about it. The action sequences were weak and slow and the heros were longing for mental support. I've seen better work from first time writers. There was no suspense and even less heart in this book. Clive might not have been the greatest, but at least he could spin a story with some accuracy and excitement (in the past). Serpant is a cheap imitation of what could have been a good novel.

Summary: CUSSLER'S NEW HEROES LACK THE ZIP & SPIRIT OF DIRK PITT!
Review: I have read every one of Clive Cussler's books, and have re-read several of them a second time. His latest, SERPENT, lacks something. Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala are also lacking if they are the "younger versions" of Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino. The book starts out on a high note, but quickly becomes bogged down in archaeological jungles. After almost 400 pages, an attempt is made to conclude the whole story and wrap up hundreds of loose ends in the last two dozen pages. Hopefully the next Cussler novel will go back to the characters and format that made his work so enjoyable. This one was almost a chore to get through.

Summary: Not too bad...
Review: Why did Clive remove the essential members of his books in favor of a new, younger crew? Dirk & Al are the very essence of his novels, and replacing them is a cruel joke to his die-hard fans. I will continue to buy his books the very day they are available, but definitely feel that without Dirk, something is missing...

Summary: I've read all of Cussler's works.....this one disapponted me
Review: I, like many, am a huge fan of Cussler. I can't wait until his new book hits the streets. Always enjoyed Dirk and company and "oceanographic" stoylines. Serpent however, was very slow, and I took weeks to read it, when I normally finish his books in days. It just didn't have enough action to keep my interest at a high level. The archilogical story line was too detailed. The few action scenes were good but not enough of them.

I hope Clive is not retiring....it just didn't seem at all like his style, flair and content. I will buy his next book but if it is the same "non-action", weak heros....I may have to find another author.

Summary: Good, but not as entertaining as Dirk Pitt et al.
Review: The plot is the sort of thing you would expect from Clive Cussler and new readers would find this a very entertaining book. However, those who have been brought up with Dirk and Al may well feel slightly let down with the more two-dimensional main characters in this book.

More Dirk Pitt please!!

Summary: An entertaining read
Review: Yes, we have no bananas. Clive Cussler means Dirk Pitt to me, so I picked up this volume with some hesitation, but since the forward has "Dirk" introducing the new characters I thought I would give it a try.

This is a very entertaining read. Austin and Zavala are fine characters and I look forward to more on their backgrounds as this series hopefully continues. I am glad that it was set in Dirk's NUMA world and that the whole gang was involved to some extent. Keep up the good work.

Summary: Plot drags and is overly desriptive on archaelogy.
Review: I have read all of Cussler's books and much prefer Dirk Pitt and crew. These characters were all right but a disappointment to a Cussler fan. There were so many aspects which seems to only lengthen the book.only an archaelogist could enjoy the lengthy descriptions. I also prefer theregular size of a paper back book.

Summary: No Dirk, No Al, No Problem.
Review: Don't believe all the negative reviews! This is a great book! Admiral Sandecker, Rudi Gunn, Hiram Yaeger, and the rest of NUMA are in the book. Heck, even Dirk Pitt & Al Giordino make a cameo appearance.

I look forward to reading Joe & Kurt's next adventure.

Summary: No Dirk and Al? I'm sure they'll be back. Meanwhile....
Review: I found Serpent to be highly entertaining in the Cussler vien. I actually like Kurt and Joe and hope to see more adventures from them. Not to say I'm tired of Dirk and Al, far from it, I just like these guys too. Maybe one day team them with the legendary Pitt and Giordino. As far as characters where concerned, it felt sort of like an ensemble piece for me. Sure Kurt and Joe take up the meat of the story, but you also have Nina, Gamay and Professor Chi, whom I found to be wonderful characters. The only characters I really found lacking were the villians, except maybe Guzman. What really drew my interest into the story though was the Indiana Jones type story which I really, really love. An exiting ride, I expect nothing less from Mr. Cussler. As for Paul Kemprecos, whatever his part was with this story, I'm sure he only helped and not hindered as some people seem to think.

All in all an entertaining ride that coulda used better villians, and maybe have Austin and Joe a little less Dirk and Al-ish next time. Other than that, a fun read, what more can you ask for in the summer.
