Rating: Summary: Fast paced and attention-grabbing! Review: A superb naval thriller in the same vein as Clive Cussler - i.e. simple to understand and not too much bogging down in subplots. The Taiwan-China angle is very similar to Dale Brown's FATAL TERRAIN, although this concentrates primarily on the efforts of the USS Cunningham and captain Amanda Lee Garrett in defeating the Chinese. The Sea Raptors and Sea Comanches were an inspired idea and may one day be reality when older aircraft needs replacing, and the idea of the stealth destroyer is based on actual projects for the future. The technobabble is written so as to be understood by anyone and the overall pacing, plotting and storylines are faultless. Well worth a read.
Rating: Summary: Good sequel to his first, still Amanda Garrett at her best Review: Another enthralling novel by James, 'Stormdragon' perceives another plausible scenario and has the reader following the continuing career of Amanda and this time her subordinate and lover, intrigue together with politics and action provide an unfortunately all too short novel. What next?
Rating: Summary: Good beliveable naval adventure Review: As a sailor and miltary hobbist it is always great to find an author that can write belivable, great action and stories. This book, and the earlier "Chooser of the Slain" qualify. I want more, and I hope the author and publisher listen to me and get a sequel out soon!
Rating: Summary: U.S. Navy stands tall against Chinese Nuclear threat Review: Cobb's second outing with the destroyer Cunningham holds your interest even through all the necessary techno babble. The plot is an ingenious one and not only has merit, but gives one pause to think about the actual viability of such a scenario. The downside here is the "love interest" between the female commanding officer and a helicopter pilot. If I had a buck for each time this flyboy called her "babe", I could upgrade my computer substantially. All-in-all a quick read and very enjoyable. I look forward to the next adventure of this easy to like group of characters.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining but typical "John Wayne" story Review: Firstly, I believe Mr. Cobb is probably a pseudonym for a female writer. It just had that feel from the writing. The good ol' USA saves the world yet again. However, certain aspects seemed horribly out of wack (i.e. "0100hrs in the afternoon"???) and an infatuation for the word "expedite". The story was slick and the book was a decent read but the "tactical" plot was a definite stretch. I had a feeling that the Cunningham would be going up the Yangste after the first couple of chapters! and lo and behold up she went.
Rating: Summary: believable female commander of a u s naval vessel Review: good story line.excellent followup to choosers of the slain.a female who can run a ship and be a woman too.james cobb gave amanda garrett heart, soul and intelligence.looking forward to another book from him.
Rating: Summary: I liked it very much Review: Great book! As riveting as 'The Devil's Teardrop',with a powerful ending to rival "The Triumph and the Glory" and a style perfect for the genre, this one is a must-read for fans of military thrillers.
Rating: Summary: An equal to his first Review: Having read and enjoyed Choosers of the Slain, it was with great interest that I ordered Mr. Cobb's next book. The story is a good one, longer and more detailed than his first. The only real fault is the lack of proof-reading in the hardback version. In the UK, this novel has the title, "Stormdragon", one that fits the story quite well. I look forward to his third novel, yet hope that the publisher gets the proofing right next time.
Rating: Summary: Very good book, Slam bang action Review: Here is a book for all those fans of naval warfare of the future and those who require a female leader. I enjoyed this book for both these reasons. The action is palusible, futuristic and well worth the read. Not to give the ending away: all the characters have a chance to shine, including, for those fans of the previous book "Chosers of the slain": Arkady, Christina and especially Amanda. As i have read all 3 books, each story stands alone and also leads up to the next story. I can not wait until the NEXT book comes out. HURRY UP MR. COBB!!!
