Rating: Summary: Mostly fun Review: Not great, but it does entertain. Approach it the way you would a James Bond movie - it'll be noisy and crammed with improbable but exciting action. That was my main complaint - TOO MUCH action. The author certainly has an imagination for dreaming up all these wild sequences, but he piles it on without end. Complication after complication, I was starting to skip that stuff to find the story again. If he could've kept the same spellbinding approach to action, but throttled down on the amount of it, this would've been a lot better. Still, I got a kick out of it. But I do agree with an earlier review below this one - I've never heard of killer whales attacking people the way they do in this book. If the author made that up (having whales act like sharks), it's a nasty mistake.
Rating: Summary: Non-stop action!!! Review: If you like fast paced non-stop action, Matthew Reilly will take you for a ride that just never ends. Plan on giving yourself a lot of time when you starting reading, because you will not want to put the book down. There is never a dull moment in the book. I look forward to Reilly's next work.
Rating: Summary: Gives hope to the rest of us struggling authors....... Review: ...... I mean, if c**p like this can get published then we've got to be in with a chance. I was taught that in a story you are allowed one coincidence, two is stretching the reader's credulity. Mr Reilly limits himself to one coincidence..... per chapter. There are so many things wrong with this book, not only with the author's writing style but in it's factual content also that it's difficult to know where the criticism should begin. I am expected to believe that one entire Squadron of the British SAS is in Antarctica for training at once. One Squadron is one entire quarter of the SAS' strength and considering they're all on their own allotted tours of duty, none of which to my knowledge are anywhere near Antarctica, it's inconceivable such a deployment would take place. Maybe the SBS or Royal Marine Commandoes I could swallow, Reilly apparently hasn't read up on the SAS that much. Then there's the problem of Scarecrow's amazing vanishing wetsuit which is on or off depending what scene he is in without him ever pausing to dress and undress. Then there's the problem of the amazing speed US air and sea units can reach Antarctica. Hawaii to the ice shelf in 3 days on a ship ? Pull the other one. Plus stealth planes shooting each other down with radar guided missiles they themselves are invisible to. The comments below on ordnance research beggar belief. Genuine "killer" orcas when I don't know of a single recorded incidence of humans attacked ? And what Reilly knows about elephant seals could be written on the back of a stamp. All in all a lousy attempt at a cobbling together of Firefox and Die Hard with characters as thin as a micron laser. Avoid at all costs unless you're the type who enjoys trash movies for their sheer badness.
Rating: Summary: Can I have a mag-hook for Christmas, pleeease??? Review: Wow - this book is dynamite. Terrific, absolutely non-stop action, action, action. Reflecting back on it, I thought I recalled one paragraph in there, along toward the middle, where not much was happening - but thumbing through again I never could find it. Ha! This book was a tremendous amount of fun to read, as I'm sure it was for the author to write. Mr. Reilly sure knows how to keep things perking right along - throwing in just about every conceivable plot twist, cliff-hanger surprise, stomach-churning thrills and spills, death-defying stunts and "risk everything" maneuvers. Our hero and his plucky allies (not all of whom are allies... another great bit of spice for the stew) definitely get put through the wringer. There were plenty of times I came to a new twist and went "Oh, no...." And plenty more times (like, right after the great hovercraft chase across the ice) when I wondered how he'd top what had already happened. "He can't top THIS..." Ha! But he *always* did. I am dismayed at the reviews where people condemn the book for not being a literary masterpiece, not another "War and Peace" or whatever. Come on! This is ENTERTAINMENT, not classic lit! This is the stuff comic books and movie serials used to be made of! This is Saturday Afternoon at the Movies.... but in a book. A really fun fun fun book! Heck, this is one of my top ten favorite reads this year (and yeah, I read a lot). Oh and by the way - I don't know if the "mag-hook" is real or a "sci-fi" invention, but I want one! Sounds like a really useful toy... er, I mean, TOOL! Guess I need to call the hardware store....
Rating: Summary: A great book for any action lover. Review: Matthew Reilley is an author that has a wonderful skill for writing and can describe action like nobody else I know. It was litterally losing sleep over the book because I stayed up much too long to read the book. The detail he uses during the fight seqences keeps you on the edge of your seat, if you are sitting. The details he has for each sequence is spell binding. The only lacking part of the books is the plot outside the action. I'm not saying that there is none, but what he has is not as deep as the action. The plot that he does have though is more than enough to hold the story together wonderfully. I recomend this book for anybody likes actions movies or just enjoys military like action. Oh I nearly forgot, if you like the stories and tales about special forces like I do (i.e. The SEALs, SAS, etc) you must read this book.
Rating: Summary: Unpickupable Review: When I started reading this book my eyes went wide. I've never seen such a barbaric use of the English language. This book should be used as a school text as an example of how NOT to write. Why the inappropriate italics? Why the nicknames for every character? Could the characters be more one-dimensional? Could the story be more implausible? Has there been a worse use of syntax in the English language? The highlight for me was the author's publicity shot - check it out.
Rating: Summary: One of the best action packed techno thrillers. Review: This book will keep you entertained from start to finish. A Clive Cussler, W.E.B.Griffin and Tom Clancy, Australian style all rolled into one. What is more exciting is that at 24 years of age, we can hope to have a lot more books from this author.
Rating: Summary: The most exciting thriller that I have read this year!! Review: I don't usually read thrillers, but was given Ice Station as a gift and could not put it down. It was exciting and fast moving. It kept me wanting more and more. The plot was clever and inovative. The story grabbed me in the first few pages.
Rating: Summary: Great research on the research station. Review: This is one of the best books I ever read. The action is non stop, the research on all the ordnance is fansastic, and the twists, well.... The twists in the tale leave even the greatest adventure writers suprised. A one to read, even if you don't like the immediate sound of it.
Rating: Summary: Action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Good fun, great action, be prepared to suspend disbelief so far that it might snap. Bruce Willis will play 'Scarecrow'. Only two things really bugged me. Matthew Reilly's annoying overuse of exclamation marks! Made the action sequences feel as though an eight year old was recounting them. "Guess what...and then he did this!!!" Also the proliferation of italics was equally annoying. I'm sure in Matthew's new book 'Temple' he will write the same ballistic cinematic action stuff but with a more mature approach. All in all, a top holiday type read. Good on ya, Aussie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
