Rating: Summary: A real disappointment from a good author Review: I was disappointed with this book. The dialogue was slow--the unnecessary conversations she included drug the pace of the book down. Also, there were some court scenes that were so predictable... Picoult can do better! There is a scene in which a character gets on the stand and to the horror of the reader.... Says something straight out of a lifetime movie! Come on, Jodi! You've got more talent that this! Not a terrible book, but certainly not Picoult's best
Rating: Summary: Very Good-Except for the Ending Review: This is the second book that I've read from Jodi Picoult, the first one being THE PACT, which I fell madly in love with. The writing was very good, the courtroom scenes were always great, I liked the culture and emotional clashes between Ellie and Katie, but the end didn't offer justice for Katie. You weren't expecting it, but the central character deserves justice for herself. Basically great book with an "incomplete" ending.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: This book was great! It was the first Jodi Picoult book I've read and today I started Salem Falls and I hope this book is as good as Plain Truth. Everyone needs to read this book. It keeps you on the edge of your chair.
Rating: Summary: Amish clash with the legal system. Review: Accurate, non-sentimentalized depiction of Amish life. While it slows down somewhat in the middle, the last third of the book is courtroom fiction at its best. Jodi Picoult is more literary, organized and talented than most.
Rating: Summary: She tells a good story Review: Jodi Picoult tells a good story. She forces you to see things differently and challenges long-held beliefs, in this case about the Amish. She did a good job in this book of leading me down the wrong path only to surprise me with an ending that fit perfectly that I didn't see coming. She likes people, so her characters are never one-dimensional. There are no villains or heroes in her books, just people who you want to know better.
Rating: Summary: Plain Truth Review: Having been born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I was a little skeptical that this book would be convincing. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I could feel myself being transported back home with the reality of the book. I even learned things about the Amish I had not known before. I have read most of Jodi's books and this is one of my favorite.
Rating: Summary: A major page turner Review: I really loved this book, I had a hard time putting it down. I read it every second that I could. The author really put alot of research into the Amish community. As well as the law. I recommend this book to anyone......
Rating: Summary: I felt I'd been transformed an Amish woman Review: I've read several of Picoult's books, but this was the only one I managed to finish so quickly because I couldn't put it down. I knew she was a wonderful storyteller from my beginning read of her works with Songs of the Humpback Whale. It's hard enough to tell a story from one person's point of view and to keep it flowing interestingly enough. She managed to tell it from 5 voices. That's phenomenal! Plain Truth tells the story of a frightened young women dealing with the consequences of going against her family, her religion, her way of life. After secretley giving birth, Katie seems to block out any memory of the birth or even the pregnancy. She delivers her baby alone in the barn one night. She lays down after the exhausting labor and falls asleep praying again for God to make it go away. She wakes up to find the baby gone. She assumes God has answered her prayers. The next morning the baby is found dead under some blankets in the barn. After Ellie, a hot shot attorney from a big city, suffers from burnout professionally and personally, she comes to her aunt's farm to relax and regroup. Amazingly enough, Ellie's aunt (by marriage) is Katie's mother's sister, Leda. Leda had been put under the Amish bann for marrying her non Amish husband, which meant she was allowed only certain types of contact with her family & others in the Amish community. Leda convinces Ellie to take on Katie's case after she's charged with murdering her newborn. In order to avoid being jailed until the trial, Katie's bail stipulations require her to be monitored at all times. In a desperate moment, Ellie agrees to be her warden. This requires her to move in with Katie's family on the farm. Picoult delicately lays out the lives of the Amish in a way you can truly engage in without ever leaving the comfort of your microwave or hair dryer. There are many twists and turns along the way to the "truth" and trial. It's a captivating read that will leave you shocked to the last page.
Rating: Summary: GREAT - Very informative Review: This book was a very good read. The book explored Amish life while showing the interaction of Plain and "real world". The title, I believe, is a foreshadowing of what it is all about - "Plain" truth is different than "Real World" Truth. It kept me on edge the entire book, and thank goodness we find out who the perpetrator was in the end!
Rating: Summary: Nothing better! Review: "Plain Truth" was the first Jodi Picoult book that I read. I've always loved reading books about the Amish. Something about them attracks me, maybe its that deep down I've wanted to experience their life style. So a friend gave me this book for my birthday and I absolutely fell in love with it. Each of Jodi's books run so smoothly - it is not a bumpy ride! I found myself staying up til 1 or 2 in the morning saying I would finish this chapter and then go to bed, but then needing to read the next chapter! You can't put it down! I loved "Plain Truth" but I can't say that its my favorite, although its up there (wait- they are all up there!). I've read all of her books, except for Songs of the Humpback Whale which I am in the middle of reading now and they were all equally terriffic. If you've read Plain Truth, don't stop there! You have to read all of her books!!!!! I recommend every single one of them. I cannot wait until her next book, Second Glance, is released in April.
