Summary: Competent reviewer?
Review: As a retired English teacher from the high school Jodi Picoult attended, I question how a reviewer can state that PLAIN TRUTH contains so many annoying grammatical errors. In the review the writer uses "alot" which most of us know is TWO words -- a lot. That does lead one to question his/her ability to judge others!

Let's be both kind AND accurate!

Summary: There's nothing "Plain" about this story!!
Review: Plain Truth has it all - mystery, suspense, romance, love, heartbreak, forgiveness. What a talented writer!!

Picoult takes you away to another place and culture. Explains it to you, and makes you want to go there and see it for yourself.

There was a part in the book that touched my soul. It made me recall a painful and difficult time in my life, however, it also helped me to remember again that there are times, when tough things happen for a reason.

Ms. Picoult did not hesitate to respond to my email when I wrote to thank her for sharing her thoughts and feelings through her writing. I highly recommend Plain Truth, and encourage you to read her other works.

Summary: Enjoyable
Review: I enjoyed this novel for the Amish element. However, as an obstetrics nurse, I found some of the medical details a bit scetchy. So off the mark, in fact, that I emailed the author with my thoughts about this. She states that she had spoken to an MD in Philly, however, I wonder if this MD is on top of his game. Anyhow, despite those annoyances, the book was a good read. The most interesting part of all was the Amish culture. I enjoy reading of sub cultures of our country.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: This was my first read by this author. The characters were flat and the story had no intrigue. I kept waiting for the big surprise. What mystery? The plot was unfortunately too obvious early on.

Summary: Plain is right!
Review: Jodi Picoult is a wonderful story teller. (Keeping Faith was amazing!!!) In my opinion she should have kept this tale, Plain Truth, for a collection of short stories. This book was so reduntant, that I would frequently doze off after only a few pages. If I read "I didn't have a baby" one more time I thought I would scream!

Summary: Bad details
Review: Although this book kept me reading, the details that were supposed to help the story along were poor. Apperently the medical stuff was researched, but i wonder....

Summary: hard to put down
Review: a fascinating story filled with discovery of cultural diversity between differing worlds which are not so far apart. Living in PA and having met several families who are Amish, the story is believeable. interesting characters and a twisting plot.

Summary: A disappointing read
Review: "Plain Truth" is about a female attorney who defends an unmarried Amish girl accused of killing her own new-born infant. I was looking forward to this book because I am an avid mysery reader and particularly like mysteries with female protagists (being female myself!) and settings that allow you to immerse yourself in a foreign culture (even if it's one right here in the US). Additionally, I had seen and loved the movie "Witness" and eagerly looked forward to spending more time in Amish country. I was sure I would love this book. Sadly, I was wrong. The characters were all two-dimensional and the dialog did not ring true, and those were even not the worst of the book's flaws. The worst flaws were the painfully obvious plot contrivances. I can't go into too much detail without spoiling the ending for those who might still wish to read the book, so I will just say that among the worst implausibilites were the supposedly brilliant and skilled defense attorney's inability to see crucial facts about the case that were overwhelmingly obvious to the reader. As the book reached its supposedly exciting climax, the attorney's gaffs (and the author's insults to the reader's intelligence) only got worse. Plus, even after all the expert testimony at the trial regarding the special importance of milk to this case, neither the attorney nor the accused's mother ever seemed to realize that it could have affected them, too. Yet another problem with the book was the very jarring note of the supernatural injected into the tale -- the accused actually sees ghosts! -- for no good reason that I could discern. Because of its poorly realized characters and the holes in the plot, this is not a book I would recommend to anyone who likes a good mystery. The only reason I gave the book any stars at all was that its account of daily Amish life was interesting and its depiction of the love between the dead baby's mother and father was truly touching. If only the rest of the book had had that power!

Summary: WORTH READING...
Review: While I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, there were some problems with it. I had to get used to the authour switching between first and third person and her numerous grammatical errors. (Don't authors have editors anymore?) There were also some contrived situations and corny lines, obviously needed to get the reader from point A to point B. But having alot of respect and admiration for the Amish and hungry to read about them (there really is little written about them) caused me to pick up this book. It was well worth it, although I was disappointed in the outcome. I do wish, however, that other reviewers would actually review the book rather than disclose the contents of the book. I would have been disappointed to be given so much information had I read the reviews before purchasing the book.

Summary: Plain Truth
Review: This was my first Jodi Picoult read, and it came highly recommended. And I wan't disappointed. The insight into the close knit Amish community was quite interesting (and from the bits that I know, quite accurate.) The story moved well and clearly. The writing is quite good - enough to have me ordering more Picoult books! And the plot unravelled in a way to keep you thinking and interested in the protagonist.
