Rating: Summary: An entertaining read.... Review: After reading the Gold Coast (one of the greatest books of all time), it is hard for Mr. Demille to come close to that type of book again. but Plum Island is an interesting story and entertaining read. I strongly recommend reading this book, and being entertained by the wit of Nelson DeMille and his NYPD lead character. ENJOY!!!!
Rating: Summary: Gotta see this on the Big Screen! Review: This is the first DeMille book I have read, and definitely will not be the last. My habit of falling asleep reading every night was interrupted by Plum Island. I found my heart racing and my breathing rapid just by the excitement of waiting to turn the page. This will make a great movie, especially with such an antagonistic and charasmatic protagonist! I refuse to write a pretentious, embellished review, just read it, you'll enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: this book blew chunks Review: this book blew chunks. there were no redeeming qualities in it. it is painfully transparent that nelson demille projects his unfufilled personal goals into the main character in this lame story. it reeks of a writers mid-life crisis.
Rating: Summary: DeMille Keeps Pages Turning With Sarcasm and Machismo Review: Nelson Demille's Plum Island kept me laughing as I turned the pages. John Corey, the injured NYC homocide detective, said and thought like a man. His actions were not always honorable, but they were what a man should do. I suppose this was the draw of the character and the appeal of the book. The story line was tricky, and you could easily be misled by any number of clues, but the wily detective always seemed to be a few steps ahead. DeMille's development of secondary characters was excellent, the perfect woman, the other perfect woman, the dumb government guys, in other novels I would consider them cliche's, but DeMille pulls it off with Corey's take on the other characters. The NYPD insights keep us up as we read on and the laughs come with regularity. Kudos to Mr. DeMille.
Rating: Summary: Totally Amazing!!! This book kept me on the edge of the sea Review: This book was totally and completely wonderful. I loved the unexpected twisted plots and the sex scenes. It was great, I stayed up all night just so i could finish it. A TOTALLY unexpected murderer!!!
Rating: Summary: Page turning thriller/mystery...hilarious Review: Seems like many of the people that didn't like this book were put off by the main character. One said "he is always right and everyone else takes a back seat." No kidding...written in a first person perspective with a wise-cracking, sarcastic NYPD cop, what did that person expect!! What I found most intriguing about this book was that I'm NOT the kind of guy being portrayed, so I really felt like I got in the head of how a cynical, wise-cracker thinks. My wife kept telling me to be quiet because I kept cracking up reading late into the night. This book is FUN! Its more thriller than mystery (unlike The General's Daughter), so keep that in mind. I'm now a major Demille fan and I hope he brings this character back!!!!!
Rating: Summary: OBNOXIOUS NYC COPS CAN BE VERY ENTERTAINING Review: As a NYC cop myself, I approach books with NYPD characters and related subject matter with some trepidation. You see, most authors are unskilled in this area, most fail to do their homework and most usually fall prey to cliches', politically correct stereotypes and ill informed absurdities when it comes to writing about and conveying the witty, often cavalier and shrewd personna of one of New York's Finest. Some of the worst offenders are retired NYPD cops themselves, like William Caunitz for example. This is absolutely NOT the case with Nelson DeMille's 'Plum Island'. DeMille hits the nail on the head in this page turner, once again proving to this reader that he is peerless today in the world of fiction. His characters ring true and the hilarity of the situations that they encounter do justice to the notion that "you can't make this shit up". DeMille does make it up and nobody does it better. I have read all of his books and I anxiously await his next. Nelson DeMille is also probably a cool guy to hang out and drink beer with. If you're ever in Brooklyn Nelson, look me up. LT. Rating: Summary: Probably the most fun novel ever. Review: People keep complaining, that DeMille lost his gift after writing The Gold Coast. That is certainly not true. Plum Island is probably the least "important" book he wrote, but it's a pleasure to read. It's a very nicely crafted tongue-in-cheek thriller that makes you laugh your head off. The witty dialogue is simply stunning if you don't expect literature. And you get a 100-page finale that's really dark and satisfying on top of that. If you are a female reader I'd consider Plum Island a *** (3 stars out of five) book, because it's a book full of men's humor and male characters. - Although, surprisingly, my girlfriend seemed to enjoy reading it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: could not put it down Review: I have always enjoyed Nelson DeMille but the way he has written Plum Island is superb. It is almost a Mickey Spillane type but with humour and you cannot help but like the guy even though he is a pain in the butt most of the time. Mr DeMille could surely write comedy after this effort. I loved it and give it 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: A loveable hero, in a near perfect book Review: Nelson DeMille is one of the true novelists. He writes novels and not novelised scripts, nor books for scripts. This one is a pure detective story with noir hints as to the description of his cha- racters, while turning into an adventure somewhe- re at the end, falling into a trap for this latter (we'll talk about it later). Taking into conside- ration the above, his plot is not original as conceived, but with some interesting twists and uncovered slowly to its every piece or bit. In some points though, he seems widening and he beco- mes very slow, but his point is character wise, not that we readers can't pinpoint this chatter. From a point and on (the ending chapters) the plot becomes "how will it end" and not "what will hap- pen", due to the adventure element that takes away the unexpected hint. As to his characters, DeMille illuminates the main hero and you come to love him: he's cynical, humorous, macho and most masculine, hidding very well his sensitive side, trying to resemble to Mickey Spilaine's Mike Ham- mer (and thus the noir element). Ten the most at- tention is given to the women characters and all the others become decorating characters, receiv- ing from the author the respective attention. Cha- racterisations are deep, but very much focused and do not turn the book to a heavy, psychological de- tective noir story. And DeMille's speach is of a pure novelist: picturous, but not overburdened and to the point, witty at times and real. The reader is not tired by the speech, but by the widening a- forementioned. So the scenes flow, not fastly but flow; the tempo being also of a noir novel (or film if you prefer). The adventure trap he falls into is the one of the "adventure couples": the sidekick never stand aside and appears like a Greek ancient tragedy God, to save his friend/ mate. It's a very complete book, finally, a true novel with all its pros and cons, but these minor details fail it from being a perfect book. And it is a pity for DeMille, who shows exactly what he can achieve by his writting.
