Rating: Summary: i thought plum island was a very well written book Review: this is the first book i read by nelson demille and i have to say i was very impressed. i enjoyed john corey's outlook and attitude as the main character. i thought the book was very well written i did not want to put this one down and look forward to reading more of nelson demille's books
Rating: Summary: There had better be a sequel!!! Review: What a great read! I read Word of Honor years ago and enjoyed it immensely. For some reason, I haven't read another Nelson Demille book since, until Plum Island. Wow! I was drawn into the story right away, and couldn't put it down. Great characters, great plot, and I hope it sells a billion copies so he'll write another story with John Corey and Beth Penrose in it! I hope we'll see these two again! John Corey's definitely a detective with "guts"!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious and intriquing Review: I absolutly loved this book and did not want it to end. DeMille's main character is always a tough guy with a great sence of humor that comes through marvelously. I thought "The Gold Coast" was good until I read this one. A great vacation book.
Rating: Summary: Gripping Story with a Great Protagonist Review: I loved DeMille's wonderful protagonist John Corey, sarcastic, edgy the quintessential NYC cop. Wonderully written and I immensely enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Why did the book change direction half way through? Review: Having a scientific background and education, I was excited when DeMille's recent novel began as a potential biological-disaster-thriller. His good characters early in the book (eg: two FBI agents with hidden agendas and conflict potential) fizzled into nothing when halfway through the book the plot did a U-turn and new characters took their place. The book seemed as if it would take off on a grand scale with John Corey holding the pieces to a puzzle that could save a city or the country but turned into only a one-on-one conflict. John Corey is a realisitc character, with the dry wit everyone wishes they had when confronting telemarketers. He drives the reader to want to see more of the world through his eyes, for which I applaud DeMille. Overall, a good thriller. Read it for the mystery and for John Corey's wit, not the surrounding plot.
Rating: Summary: Top of my list, exciting and well researched Review: This book brought me back to Long Island where I am from. Great characters and plot. This book had heros, villains, evil scientists, suspense, even pirates! I loved it.
Rating: Summary: Fast, easy read of some quality Review: As a HUGE fan of DeMille's, I anxiously awaited an opportunity to read this book. Once I had the chance, I was somewhat put-off by it. Whereas DeMille's best works have a flavor of political intrigue (see The Charm School and The General's Daughter) and strong protagonists, Plum Island focuses more on local lore and a smart-mouthed NYPD Detective whom I do not find compelling. Fast, easy read but predictable plot with too many wise-cracks for Corey. Not a book I'd hugely reccomend, but wouldn't tell people to avoid it either.
Rating: Summary: Great 3/4 of a Book Review: I loved reading this book on my vacation. The mystery of Plum Island was a great idea. I also enjoyed the local flavor. I was disappointed with the ending which turned into a Rambo Styled Boat Chase. In general I find many of Demilles work to suffer from poor endings. Cathedral was also an excellent 3/4 of a novel.
Rating: Summary: Good if you've got the guts for it (pun intended) Review: Detective John Corey is someone most women love to hate - all bravado and big talk. But of course, fictitious heroes - just like real ones - are more complex than first impressions lead us to believe. I found myself liking John and his right-on assessments of other male jerks as he limped, coughed and charged through Nelson Demille's plot. My only critcism is the never ending boat race and the "gutsy" handling of the villian by our hero at the end. Demille should be penalized for "unnecessary roughness" on that play. Great read for a long flight or a bout of insomnia.
Rating: Summary: Exciting, fast paced and gripping Review: An excellent narrative that leads the reader down many possible outcomes of a double murder investigation. The inclusion of government agencies, biohazard material and germ warfare, and the history of a famous pirate are delivered in a fashion that is often comical yet serious. The light hearted approach of the writer deters the reader from putting the book down.
