Rating: Summary: Disappointing turn of storyline Review: Started out the book expecting something exciting on the line of "Virus vs. Earth" and instead got an obnoxious "Columbo does Treasure Island". The comical remarks became tiring very quickly. I haven't tried any other Demille books and I'm wondering if I should.
Rating: Summary: One of Demille's Best Review: Add me to the list of Demille fans who feels that this is one of his best books. No drab hero here, but one you would really like to get to know as a person. Corey is bright, witty, and fun to follow through the pages of this intriguing book. I'm glad it was a long book because I really enjoyed the ride. I didn't particularly like General's Daughter, but I felt this was a most entertaining novel.
Rating: Summary: "Island" good, "Coast" better. But still worth it! Review: The ratings/reviews (read here) for this book were "all over the map", (no pun intended). I didn't know what to expect, but had to find out for myself. I've read 4 previous DeMilles. I, too, must come to the defense of the book. It is a captivating story from one of the best (maybe the best) mystery/suspense writers today. John Corey is one raucous character. Once again, and much like the Gold Coast, John Corey (like John Suttter) was rip-roaringly funny. Once again, I laughed out loud so many times. In fact, Nelson, I think, got a bit carried away, because it seemed that everything that came out of John's mouth was a joke after a while. While I won't say John's words became predictable, his attitude did, and that grew a bit tiresome. Nevertheless, if you want an entertaining summer (or any season)read, then get Plum Island. The characters are well-developed.You almost think you know these people. The story incorporates drama, wit & humor and will keep you up past your bedtime. Though not as good as The Gold Coast (because the plot is a bit far-fetched), it is, well worth your time if you enjoy being entertained. You too, will be looked at strangely when you're caught laughing out loud uncontrollably. I look forward to DeMille's next one. This guy can write.
Rating: Summary: DEMILLE IS THE BEST!! Review: NELSON DEMILLE IS THE MOST ENTERTAINING WRITER TODAY. HIS STORIES ARE GRIPPING, ENTERTAINING, AND EDUCATIONAL. HE IS SIMPLY A GREAT WRITER. WHILE PLUM ISLAND WAS VERY GOOD, DEMILLE WILL ALWAYS BE MEASURED AGAINST WORD OF HONOR AND CHARM SCHOOL. BEING A LONG ISLAND NATIVE I LOVE NOVELS THAT HIT SO CLOSE TO HOME. PLUM ISLAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PLACE OF UNCERTAINTY, FEAR, AND MYSTERY TO ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN IT PASSING ON THE FERRY. DEMILLE ALSO WRITES SOME GREAT SEXUALLY CHARGED TENSION SCENES. THIS IS A WINNER.
Rating: Summary: One of his best - totally riveting with a sense of humor Review: I absolutely loved Plum Island. I think it is one of his best novels, although I've enjoyed many of them. The story keeps you guessing right until the end. The main character was a real strong point, mixing a wry sense of humor with the most intense moments. Even if you've never read DeMille, this book is one that you shouldn't miss.
Rating: Summary: Great escapism reading Review: On the flight from Tokyo to SFO, I'm reading this and laughing so hard I wake up the people around me. A great lead character in Corey -- determined, gutsy, and funny, and an out-there plot that just could have been true. Impossible to put down!
Rating: Summary: Sorry, I liked it...... Review: After reading some of the negative reviews, I am wondering if I may have a personality disorder as I actually liked the book. I thought is was fast moving and entertaining; no, it did not change my life, however, I did enjoy the spin and John Cory's BS. If you're looking for a serious book which could very likely change your life, try the Bible, if you read to be entertained, give Plum Island a whirl.
Rating: Summary: Good Review: PLUM ISLAND was first excerpted in "Troika Magazine." Reading that excerpt made me want to read the novel itself. It is quite a read. A gritty detective type book. (What made me buy the DeMille issue of "Troika Magazine" was a short story in the previous issue by Craig Furnas, who wrote a great short story; but you should really try Furnas's latest novel THE SHAPE: A NOVEL OF INTERNATIONAL SUSPENSE, if you want a true page-turner). PLUM ISLAND is a a good summer-read book. It is contrived in ways, but if you're in the mood for escapism, it delivers.
Rating: Summary: Ouch!...It's not that bad! Review: After reading Plum Island and after reading some of the scathing reveiws here, I felt I had to come to the defense of the book. Maybe not his best, but still worth it. The main charactor is just that, funny, rude, smart and human. The story goes in a direction that is not expected and somewhat "off the wall" but who wants predictability? There are sections that dragged a bit, but the book grabbed me from the start. I laughed out loud and looked forward to my evening time with the book.
Rating: Summary: Should have remained buried...along with the treasure Review: You should stop reading this book after about Chapter 5. It starts with the introduction of a potentially great character in Detective John Corey, and an exciting scenario for a mystery. But DeMille cannot sustain the plot or the character, and from then on it limps its way to a dreary and inevitable conclusion. Reading DeMille is a hit or miss affair, and it certainly fun trying to guess what he is going write about next. Sometimes it works: General's Daughter, Gold Coast and Cathedral are all very different, but all work. Plum Island is a great disppoiontment.
