Rating: Summary: A terrific and fast paced adventure Review: I loved it! I found the main character to be hysterically funny and likeable, someone I wish I knew. The plot was intriguing and original, and certainly kept me guessing and turning pages until the wee small hours of the morning. I, like others above, read through some of the readers reviews above and was pretty surprised at the amount of vitriol that they heaped on to Mr. DeMille. All I can say is, LIGHTEN UP. There are some of us who remember what things were like before everyone had to be "Politically Correct", and I am glad that someone can write, or make a movie, or do anything creative without worrying who they are going to offend. A wonderful and fun read, go for it!
Rating: Summary: beyond brilliant - demille's dry humor at it's best... Review: Just when you thought Demille couldn't get any better... The Charm School was captiviating, The Gold Coast steamy and suspenseful. Demille has outdone himself once again with Plum Island. A spellbinding story of lust and murder and in the intricate weave of another small Long Island town. A master storyteller.
Rating: Summary: Total disrespect for people and property Review: Plum Island was the worst book I read all summer. John Corey demonstrates disrespect for people and property throughout the entire novel while bragging about it. The characters and the plot are both underdeveloped. How many times did Detective Penrose have to tell Corey to calm down while he disrepectfully destroys both property and civil rights? A horrible novel.
Rating: Summary: Problems In The "I" Of The Storm Review: You had me for 400 pages. Maybe I appreciate seaside tales because I was raised in land-locked Ohio. I couldn't wait to reopen the book, even when I discovered the bad guy a hundred pages earlier. Me? I? Awfully personal! That is the problem with the last one hundred pages. The point of view is first person. A very cynical, sexist, cocky and genuine first person. We know the bad guy. The narrator's partner is expendible. We are all in a hurricane. What's the problem? "I" can't be killed. Not by bullets, gas or ocean. "I" am narrating. "I" am alive. For 80% of the book, "I" wasn't relevant to the great tension & intrigue. There was no tension in the climax because "I" am alive. It is a shame for the author to have gone so far with a colorful plot, only to lose it at the end. In this case -- the "I's" don't have it.
Rating: Summary: DeMille...delightful as ever. Review: Nelson DeMille can't write enough books to satisfy me. DeMille has an uncanny ability to transport the reader to the location (in this case, Plum Island) and describe his characters in such a way that you not only visualize them, you feel as if you know them. The plot in Plum Island was intriguing and keeps the pages flying. Mystery, intrigue, humor, Plum Island has it all! It's a 10.
Rating: Summary: Hold on 'Till the End! Review: Demille does it again! This is an excellent detective thriller. Imaginative, realistic characters, twisting plotline, and the edge of your seat ending to cap it off. John Corey is a hero that we can all love, with cool wit and intelligence. Blows away Robert Parker's Spenser. Story drags a little in the middle, but more than makes up for it with a strong chase ending. Reminds me of Charm School nail-biting end. So read-on and laugh and gasp and try and figure this out. Time well spent
Rating: Summary: A double-murder with a double helping of suspense. Review: This is one of the best detective bestsellers that I've ever read. The protagonist is a down-to-earth New York City cop recuperating from an assasin's bullets at the home of his uncle in rural Long Island. He is asked to help the small-town local police in a double murder with national security implications.
The cast of characters is both three dimensional and believable, as is the plot which twists and turns like an out-of-control slinky tumbling down the steps; while keeping the reader guessing throughout the investigation. The main character is the type of guy I'd choose as a best buddy, and the descriptions of eastern Long Island and its history are both beautiful and informative.
This is a well-written page-turner that you'll be passing around to all of your friends, as I did. A guaranteed four-star thriller.
Rating: Summary: At last a detective who is not so P.C.! Review: I loved the humor of detective John Corey. I laughed out loud through the whole book. People who were offened by DeMilles dialogue need to lighten up. I loved his witt and irreverence. DeMille painted Plum Island very eerily and chillingly. I felt the story moved at a good pace. Ree-views (Ree Mancini)
Rating: Summary: Interesting, not spell-binding, but entertaining Review: Mr. DeMille has captured on paper the ideal example of a hard-bitten, chauvanistic homocide detective. John Corey accepts nothing at face value, expects everyone to lie to him and suspects all persons of the crime. I was truly captured from the start of the book. With all the characters are in place, even an experienced reader had trouble deciding who the perp was. However, the way Mr. Corey dealt with the perp/vintner, called for a stretch of the imagination. Maybe it's good that John Corey is not a real cop...or is he
Rating: Summary: A Bit of a deviation from the norm...but great! Review: I loved the book. DeMille should start a series of John Corey novels
