Rating: Summary: Great summer read Review: My wife and I both read this book in beach chairs sitting at the atlantic surf. Though not as heavy a topic as Spencerville, and certainly not a War and Peace, Plum Island is definitely an enjoyable read. Unlike other DeMille works where you want to turn the pages quickly, this one must be savored because of his witty dialogue. If you read too fast, you'll miss some of the best humor to be written in some time. People at the beach wondered what I was suddenly laughing about. He truly has created a real life character. Women may not appreciate him as much as men, but he's definitely a memorable protagonist. Great summer read
Rating: Summary: Great start, weak finish Review: Demille does a great job of creating the hero of the book and setting him up as a believable and sympathetic character. But, the rest of the players are plastic. The love interest ends up as a dissapointing one night stand. The resolution of a complicated plot start is a bit simplistic, like he couldn't think of any interesting twists to the plot once he created it. When the plot unfolded and had its real denoument, I thought it was a red herring. It wasn't, and I was disappointed.
But, the writing is lucid and captivating. A great book for airports, long flight delays, or just a lazy summer weekend.
Rating: Summary: One of Demille's best yet! Review: Demille's John Corey is a winner! He brings a sense of humor, fun and love to his investigations for a dollar a day most days and for free on others. The Long Island township of Southhold will never be the same. Plum Island is fast paced, and it's charcters are colorful and believable. Demille has out done himself in this bestselling novel of island history and intrigue. A must read, for Demille fans and a great introduction to Demille's wit and imagination for new readers
Rating: Summary: nelson, you should be ashamed! Review: This book is a quick summer read, and it is somewhat entertaining, but please...Nelson DeMille, you should be ashamed of yourself.
You're a truly talented author, and some of your
past books have been among the best I've ever read.
I find it hard to believe that Plum Island was
even written by you. Are you just trying to use
your name now to cash in on the next big paycheck?
This book is even more commercial than a recent John Grisham.
There were points where I felt like I was watching
a grade B movie in slow motion. I'm not saying that
this book isn't fun, but it certainly isn't worthy
of Nelson's name.
Rating: Summary: One of my Summer's most enjoyable reads! Review: Though it was a bit slow in places, I thoroughly enjoyed Plum Island. Some of the one-liners were a tad tedious, but I often found myself chuckling out loud and saying, "Man, I wish I'd written that." It wasn't as good as Gold Coast or General's Daughter, but I think that's a kind of apples and oranges sort of thing. I've recommended this one to a number of my customers in the bookstore (which doesn't plug in) including the Mayor of Dallas and have had no bad reviews come back to me yet. John Corey is crass, generally pretty unlikable, pretty much a male chauvinist, and I certainly hope I never meet anyone like that in real life. Yeah, right!! For anyone who doesn't think less-than-pleasant protaganists should exist, might I suggest a little Camus, Baldwin or Fitzgerald? I enjoy reading everyone's reviews by the way, and it helps me in my work. Keep reading and writing folks.
p.s. For those of you who wish DeMille would take less time between books...just remember how fast Patricia Cornwell's been cranking 'em out...MEOW!!!!
Rating: Summary: A GOOD AND ENTERTAINING READ Review: Everything that has been said is true. The story is predictalbe and the boat ride in the hurricane is a bit far fetched. The one-liners are funny but a bit overused. But guess what. I enjoyed it....
I have been going through "withdrawal pains" waiting for this book. It was not as action riveting as Cathedrel , By The Waters of Babylon and The Talbot Odyssey, nor as stirring and frightening as The Charm School or as funny as the Gold Coast and not as compelling as Word of Honor. But It is as enjoyable as Generals Daughter and Spencerville . I can't wait for his next book which I understand will be taking us back to Vietnam. Write fast!!
Rating: Summary: Good Read, Bad Protagonist Review: I must credit Demille for having the courage to write a book featuring a totally unlikable protagonist.
He starts out making this guy a cookie-cutter mystery novel cynical big city police detective (which I find in virtually every mystery novel involving big city police detectives), then goes on to make him one of the most despicable characters ever to claim to have the best interests of the public at heart.
The single thing that rescues this book from being a parody of the genre is the story, which kept my attention well enough that I finished the book in one sitting.
Rating: Summary: Why does Nelson Demille hate women? Review: I was so disappointed in Nelson Demille's latest offering, Plum Island. His hero seems to never think of women in any context but sexual and the red herrings the author throws at his readers are given way too much time and attention. The real culprit was not believable....I would have bought an international biological warfare coverup before I believed a crass little man. . . well, I don't want to give away the story. The way the narrator of the story views and handles women also leaves a lot to be desired. If he wasn't thinking with his zipper, he was working on a way to get his partner or a comely shopkeeper into his (or any handy) bed. I was very disappointed in Plum Island. I loved other Demille tales, but this one fell short in a myriad of ways
Rating: Summary: I've read them all!! Review: This is his third best effort behind CHARM SCHOOL and GOLD COAST, in that order. The main character, Corey, is reminiscent of the main character in GOLD COAST-- he oozes wit, charm and sarcasm. Mr. DeMille proffers a great narrative description of Long Island Sound and its habituees. Fast paced; a good, light read. Not long on substance as the plot was too predictable, but DeMille makes up for it in the laugh department
Rating: Summary: Everyone hates him, everyone loves him? Review: How can one guy haave all the luck? He's shot, has no job, but lives on the coast with beutiful women doing his job for $1. Come on! It was still an enjoyable read. Farfetched but interesting
