Rating: 4 stars
Summary: fun
Review: This was my first Nelson Demille novel. I thought this book was very interesting. John Corey is quite a character.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Incredible
Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I read a LOT of books. It is funny, suspenseful, and simply a great story! I could hardly wait until DeMille wrote the second book, "Lion's Game". Get reading!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Figured Out the Ending -- But Story Kept Me Going
Review: About half way through the book, you really know who committed the crime -- but you are really suprised by the villians actions.

Mr. Demille does a wonderful job of making the characters very real and engaging -- so it is very difficult to put the book down. I even must admit that on a couple of occasions I laughed out loud (rather uncommon for a mystery novel...)

I have enjoyed other works by the author. This one is better than Charm School but maybe not as good as the General's Daughter for story line.

Summary: Murder? Biological Warfare? Terrorism... NOT!
Review: If you think you are getting into a story about scientists, biological warfare, and world wide terrorism (as the cover leads for you to believe) get ready for a big disappointment. This book boils down to a murder story worthy of a "USA Network Original Movie". It's not bad and if you are one of those people who read a lot and enjoy a "by the numbers" murder mystery, then go for it. Corey is entertaining in a "Fletch-wannabe" way, but his act it like a Backstreet Boys single: Mildly entertaining for a while, then annoyingly over-played, then just excruciatingly painful. If this is Nelson's best work, I'll pass on his other efforts.

Summary: A Plum-Good Time
Review: Loved it. Character of John Corey is great, he's heroic, passionate and hilarious. I lend this book out to friends and they instanly become DeMille fans.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A good read - because of the main character
Review: I just finished reading this book, and I already miss the main character, John Corey. The plot of the novel does not disappoint. Mr. Demille did a good job at taking an unexpected but credible plot line, and developing it well. But the truly distinct element of this novel is in the mannerisms, logic, and personality of its gruff, blunt, intelligent, and outspoken main character. This novel is written in the first person, and generally I don't prefer that, but this novel changed my mind. John Corey rings true (and hilariously so) from the very start. Blend that with a well developed mystery, and you've got a truly unique (some could say "novel") reading experience. (sorry for the pun - it was very intended)

Summary: You will love Detective John Corey!
Review: With this novel, Nelson DeMille creates a page-turner, Detective John Corey is witty, smart, and humorous. The kind of hero that you want to see again and again. This book combines humor, suspense, romance, and a whole lot more all in one.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Predictable but good
Review: While this book was very predictable it was still very entertaining. I didn't enjoy it as much as The Gold Coast but it is more of a DeMille style book. There is good suspense the book is very funny. I found myself laughing with the main character, John Corey, at his comments on other characters in the story. The story is very formulaic but there are couple twists that keep it interesting. It was very obvious to me early one what was being smuggled off the island but it was done pretty well.

Summary: Predictable but Entertaining
Review: I just read Plum Island this past weekend and it was my first Nelson DeMille novel. The story is told through the eyes of the main protagonist John Corey, an NYPD cop convalescing from gun shot wounds at his uncle's East End house. He's rude, crude and obnoxious, but he grows on you. At times I found myself laughing out loud at his thoughts about the other characters. Some reviewers have complained that the Ted Nash character disappears halfway through the story, but he does lurk in the background and perhaps DeMille is setting him up to be Corey's nemesis or rival in a future novel. I imagine that Beth Penrose would appear in any future books containing the Corey character.

As a Long Islander who has visited the North Fork, I found it interesting to see places I have seen with my own eyes used as the setting for a novel, apart from Plum Island itself of course.

As for the story itself, it held my interest, though I knew 1/3rd of the way through what exactly was being smuggled off the island. The high speed boat chase in the middle of a hurricane had Hollywood written all over it. I also did not find the romance with Emma Whitestone to be credible, though I suppose it had to be included because it is part of the formula for these kinds of stories.

All in all, I found Plum Island to be a good read. It is certainly not a literary classic, but it does make for an entertaining diversion and it has instilled in me a desire to see the North Fork again.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Highly Entertained Throughout
Review: This was my first DeMille novel, but it won't be my last. I have never read a mystery/thriller where the detective was more sarcastic and/or funny than John Corey. I encourage everyone to pick up this book, but beware, after a few pages there won't be any turning back.
