Summary: Plum Island and other De Mille books
Review: I have read this book, as I have all of Mr. De Milles books. I finished it in two sittings over a weekend. Very fast moving. Exiting. I left me with the feeling that I would like to meet the characters again in an additional book. Recommended.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Not that great.
Review: The detective's character and sense of humor got a bit tiresome after a while. The story wasn't that good either so I have no idea why there were rave reviews.

Summary: Follow John Corey into the Mysteries of Long Island
Review: This is the first DeMille book I have read and I loved it. I have subsequently read "The Gold Coast" and "The Charm School" both of which I enjoyed but not as much as I enjoyed reading Plum Island.

First of all, the setting. DeMille describes a charming east Long Island that I never paid much attention to (I travel through Orient Point a half a dozen times a year). We receive an interesting portrayal of the quaint villages, the local flavor, and the snotty wine growers. DeMille also gives the reader a dose of the history of the area describing the early times when pirate landed on its shores. Then there is Plum Island itself which I will gaze at more closely now each time I pass it on the ferry.

The characters are well developed. John Corey, the lead character, is this off-duty detective who gets caught up in this mystery. He's brash, sometimes rude, prefers a good beer to a vintage glass of wine and is very likeable. The other characters, including the minor ones, are defined enough to feel like you know them.

The plot. I won't give anything away. ..just a good mystery that leads you down a few different directions.

Summary: Plum Island
Review: Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. This is my first Nelson Demille book and I couldn't wait to go buy up all others that I could find. John Corey is great. His character is superbly developed, and very believable. The storyline and Demille's way of conveying the story makes it very hard to put down. I really appreciate the fact that nothing was "over the top" or unbelievable. I recommend this book highly to anyone. Great job Mr. Demille! I just started reading The Lion's Game and am hoping that Corey is not killed off. Keep him coming.

Summary: Super duper!
Review: This book is one of Demilles best! Tense and entertaining from page one till the end!

Summary: Fun, quick read...but a little long.
Review: The book zipped a long, but I got bored with all the characters that had nothing to do with the plot.

Towards the beginning of the book, there is a very long section (100 pages) describing a detailed tour of a facility on Plum Island, but it had little to do with the rest of the story and the parts that did could have been clipped to a few pages.

But bring it to the beach, you won't be bored.

Summary: Exciting, exciting Plus Island
Review: Plum Island, without question was one of the best books I have ever read. (And I read a lot!) The only reason the end was OK, was because I knew the Lion's Game was waiting for me. I have recommended both books to all my friends and even purchased Plum Island for a few to get them started. Bring back John Corey! I love him!

Oh! and if this is ever made into a movie, I think Bruce Willis would be a perfect John Corey!

Thanks Mr. deMille for a great book and great character. I am having trouble getting into another book, that I'm considering reading them again. They were that good!

Summary: Almost good.
Review: I like Mr. DeMille's writing style, comfortable and easy to go along with. I found the setting of the story intriguing as well. I also thought the facts were well-researched. What I didn't like . . . well, let's see. The jokes -- too many and not always funny. The bad guy was a little too bad to be believable. The CIA agent who consumed Corey for the first few chapters mysteriously disapeared half way through the book never to appear again. And John Corey himself. Yikes, what a jerk. Too macho, too threatened. He seemed to take great pains to irritate everyone he met. From CIA agents to little old ladies, no one seemed to escape his wrath. Of course, his attitude only hurt his cause. It got to the point where I started to wonder if he was just plain stupid. (This was also the case in The General's Daughter -- what's up with that?) Last, but not least, I thought the romance with Elizabeth was implausible. Any woman who cared one iota about her career as a homicide detective would steer clear of men who said things like "Wanna play hide the pickle." But of course (probably because the author is male) it turned her on. In the end, I didn't find Corey very likable, just kind of drunk and obnoxious. And bright.

Summary: Plum Island is a movie script
Review: I liked the book. It was entertaining, but it was obviously written for the big screen. The story is formulamatic at best, and the ending was all Hollywood.

John Corey (Bruce Willis in the movie) is a NY detective that is recuperating from gunshot wounds on the north eastern Long Island coast. The local chief hires him to help investigate a double mirder of a couple John was friendly with. They work on Plum Island, a storied place where locals thought biological weapons were created. John is a good character, but he wears on you. He tells jokes on every page, drinks too much while on duty, and seems to think more with his middle leg than with his brain. I laugh at him, but there are times he is just plain overbearing.

Elizabeth Penrose (Gillian Anderson in the movie) is a straight laced detective and she is a stunning beauty. Her and John clash at first, but eventually come together. The other characters are Max the police chief (I keep seeing Sam Elliot for the movie); Fredric Tobin, local winery owner and rich socialite (possibly David Straithharn, or maybe Jean Reno); Emma Whitestone, a hottie who heads a historical society (definitely Gwen Paltrow or Uma Thurman); and Paul Stevens, the evil head of security on Plum Island (possibly Garey Busey's kid). It is a stock group, and all were written for the movie.

The book is a bonafide page turner until the end. It is very funny at times, and the story keeps you interested until you have figured it out. Therein lies the problem: everybody knows what happened, but the book keeps going for another 150 pages so the commercial ending can happen!

It is worth the paperback price, and I imagine the right readers could make the audio version a hoot. A movie will happen, and it will be a box office hit that the critics will hate. I apologize for the movie references, but that is how the book read.
