Rating: Summary: Murder, lost treasure and romance = perfect combination Review: As an ardent Nelson DeMille fan, I think that this is one of the best. This is a book of real intrique and it is one where the author does not allow the reader to get lost even with the story evolving around the topic of germ warfare. In the hands of a less gifted author, this work would not be the page-turner that it is.
Rating: Summary: Great summer reading Review: Plum Island is a good, quick summer read! It's fast-paced and intriguing. Nelson DeMille provides a historical background of Long Island that will really grab history buffs. The story is somewhat predictable, but gripping. You can feel the terror and fear building throughout the novel that climaxes with a scene right out of "the Perfect Storm".
Rating: Summary: This book took my breath away! Review: This is my first DeMille book, but it won't be my last. I just loved John Corey. This was a first-person novel in the tradition of Dean Koontz's FEAR NOTHING, which I also recomend. PLUM ISLAND had all the humor anyone could ask for, a little romance, and an excellent chase scene with boats during a hurricane. Try to guess who-dunit. You'll have a good time with this book, I guarantee!
Rating: Summary: I was laughing out loud! Review: I bought this book on audio cassette because I was driving from Michigan to California and needed something to pass the time. Theauthor has a fantastic way of telling a story. I was hooked after a few minutes. Each character was brought to life by the author's excellent writing style. The story is well placed, and you cannot help but love the main character. During a few parts, the star gets into such outrageous situations that I was laughing out loud. If you are looking for a great story with an original plot, pick up a copy of this book.
Rating: Summary: THE funniest book I've ever read. Review: "Funny" dialogue, in books, almost never reads well. It ends up sounding either corny or contrived. Nelson DeMille's Plum Island, however, has the quick wit of a stand up comic. The main character and narrator is such a wise-ass that the conversations/ interrogations actually caused me to laugh out loud! (This has never happened to me before.) I strongly urge everyone to read this book! It's absolutely hilarious!
Rating: Summary: A fun adventure Review: I read this book on the recommendation of my wife, who is a HUGE Nelson Demille fan. I don't read mysteries, but I thought I would give it a try.During the first few chapters, my reaction was mild annoyance. The narration, told in first-person by convalescing NYPD Detective John Corey, was just too flip, the wisecracks too forced, so that it detracted from the story. Another thing that bothered me was that Corey comes from the "No class, no manners, no charm - yet the chicks can't keep their hands off" style of character. I couldn't understand why the pretty antiquarian was so eager to jump him at first sight. Oh well, have your fantasy, Mr. Demille. Some of Corey's lines are pretty good. After one fellow cracks a lame joke, Corey muses, "He smiled at his wit; appropriately it was a half smile." And he actually is a good investigator, in a bumbling, Columbo sort of way. The plot was well thought out, and had me rushing through to its exciting conclusion. This was one of the fastest books I've read, as I couldn't put the darn thing down. All in all a good yarn, if a little silly at times. Kind of like a Hardy Boys mystery for adults.
Rating: Summary: Good Until the End Review: I am a big Demille Fan. I think his characters, plots, and conversations are great. I have read all of his books and I love them all. Plum Island is great until the end. Like the Lion's Game, with its cop out ending, Plum Island is very exciting until the last few pages. At the end, its a very silly conventional chase. However, up until the last few pages its great. Is it worth the time, absolutely. You will read through it very fast. Demille's books are always fun to read. However the end is poor.
Rating: Summary: EXCITING, INTERESTING TALE, LOTS OF INTRIGUE Review: I read this book before I read the new DeMille book, The Lion's Game, and I really liked this book better. It lays the framework for his next book and you will find that John Corey is an interesting character that you will learn to care about. You won't be able to put the book down until you find out what's going on on Plum Island. The chatter is interesting and the characters even more so. Try this one, you'll like it.
Rating: Summary: Great character... Review: This book was the best from Demille I have read so far. The wit that often makes me burst out in laughter is very distinctive. The character John Corey that has been created in this work is very likeable, although I don't think this style of writing about these kind of male thoughts appeals to a lot of women, but I might be wrong about that!? The main character is definately good for another story and I hope that Demille realizes that.
Rating: Summary: Surprising Review: From possible terorrist biological contamination to lust to pirates treasures, DeMille covers it all. Well developed characters & a twisting, turning plotline, left me wanting more.
