Rating: Summary: Carried by wannabe-Anarchists everywhere. Review: After the initial novelty of owning "Steal this Book" wore off, I was mildly depressed by it. This might have been helpful in 1971, when it was originally written, but you simply can't use hardly any of the stuff Hoffman writes about. Truly a disappointment.
Rating: Summary: GREAT!!!!!!!!!! Review: Although I am not old enough to have certain referances in this book make sense to me, and though it is slightly out of date (I highly doubt that there is still a poet in New York willing to let you crash at his place!) it still lays an amazing ground work, and some damn funny "anticdotes". It will definitaly give you a few revelations, and great ideas (propper protest garb for one). Just try not to pay (too much) for it
Rating: Summary: Not a first book to read Review: I was introduced to this book in 1972 at twelve years old. obviously it was not ment for children. I thought it was "cool" to steal and o.k. to be a free loader.I became a good undercover criminal for many years of my life. This is one of the books that should have been burned for the good of our nation. If you find this book still amusing, check yourself. God Bless
Rating: Summary: One star for historical content, one for style Review: I first read this book when it came out, in the early seventies. I wondered, "will his philosphy prevail?" Over thirty years later the book is still selling even though the nihilistic message has proven disasterous for its individual proponents. Now that the political dust has settled, historical hindsight reveals a book valuable for insight into just how tumultuous "The Sixties" were for a certain faction of our society,(a vociferous minority indeed, but merely a minority). The so called "revolution" has foundered and what has washed ashore is this book. It can no longer claim the status of legitimate social manifesto ,but as an historical document, similar, in a sense, to writings from France's Reign of Terror or the death bed confessions of a criminal it has some merit. Taking its message seriously is the first step to prison or worse. If you have an interest in the "Sixties Revolution" that got Nixon in trouble, 4 Kent State students killed and 18 year olds the vote, read the book.
Rating: Summary: BLAST FROM THE PAST... but so much more!! Review: Abbie Hoffman was an inspiration to a generation - and a darn good writer, to boot!! The original tradebook size publication was a LOT easier to decipher than this smaller sized printing - but all the tricks and treats are still there, i.e.: "those ridiculous free introductory or subscription type letters that you get in the mail often have a postage guaranteed return postcard for your convenience. The next one you get, paste it on a brick and drop it in the mailbox. The company is required by law to pay the postage. You can also get rid of all your garbage this way." The attitude is refreshing - even now, after all these years!!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as it could be... Review: This book was very good, but it did not get to the heart of the matter...read Zerzan for that! Steal the book Elements of Refusal before you steal Steal This Book.
Rating: Summary: This Book Will End Free Speech..... Review: if it hasn't been ended already. "A Handbook of Survival and Warfare for the Citizens of the WoodStock Nation." Abbie Hoffman does not only provide the reader with a (outdate, but still worthwhile) method of survival, by rebelling against the corrupt politics and media of Amerika, but also provides a forshadowing of what is to come. As times continue, the lines between the system and the people begin to blur. The first amendment is being challenged in the DeCSS trial, where the MPAA feels it is right to sue over the fact that you're not using THEIR product to watch DVDs. I'm not sure if Hoffman ever predicted this as beign a reprecussion of the system and it's power, but it is certainly a sign (and definitely not a good one) that the government wants more and more control over what we do, as well as the fact that the government and corporate america seem to be slightly blurry as to where one ends and the other begins. Abbie Hoffman provides many ingenius (and educational, might I add) ways in which you can survive on your own and spread information. There is a full section on guerilla warfare, as well as bomb construction, drugs, and how to steal stuff (including..of course, stealing this book..hehe). I recommend this book for anyone who has (ever) felt that their first amendment rights are being infringed on. By not allowing literature like Steal This Book, publishers are infringing on the first amendment rights of an american citizen, an issue that has become more and more prevelant as time goes by. The discussions included in this book include (but are not limited to) free food, free land, free medical care, education, and more. There is in-depth discussion of using things to your advantage.

Rating: Summary: This book rocks! Review: There are many self-help books on the market today. Trouble is most of them suck. This book is a veritable tome of information on how to live anywhere on little or no money, along with how to cook, travel, and support yourself forever.
