Rating: Summary: Unbalanced rant Review: Here's a snippet that captures well, I think, the overall tone of Ingraham's book. On page 87, after she has lambasted Charlie Sheen, Tim Robbins, and others for being on an "anti-Bush mission," Ingraham writes the following: "Of course this is where the left will say, 'Wait, what about conservatives Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, Kelsey Grammar, Fred Thompson (former Tennesee senator), and Charlton Heston? And in rock and roll there's Ted Nugent and Kid Rock!' Sure, and country music is loaded with right-leaning talent: Toby Keith, Darryl Worley, the Warren Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams Jr., and others. But it is a simple fact that in Hollywood and in the arts community of New York, it's de rigueur to be left-wing. And if you're not left-wing, then odds are you'll keep quiet about your politics." See the contradiction? She names no less than 14 SUCCESSFUL conservative artists, almost none of whom has remained quiet about his politics, and then she claims that conservatives in the entertainment industry who don't keep quiet about their politics suffer persecution. If that's so, how is it that these outspoken conservative artists have remained so successful? They certainly don't appear to have been black-listed. Ingraham's real rub, however, is not artists speaking out on political issues (as she claims), but LIBERAL artists speaking out on political issues. I have to agree with those other reviewers who argue that Ingraham wants to silence only those in the media who don't agree with her. Methinks they are dead on.
Rating: Summary: Shut Up and Sing: How Elites from Hollywood, Politics, and t Review: A pugnacious, funny and devastating critique of the liberals who hate America.
Rating: Summary: GOP Branding... Review: The fallacies of this book are: 1. Ms Ingraham is as annoying as any of the celebs she cites in her book. She should have devoted a chapter in her book to herself. 2. Where's Ted Nugget? Where's Pat Boone? Where's Anita Bryant? Ohhhh - I get it, they should "shut up and sing" only if they don't share the POV of the author. 3. Love how the GOP brands everyone. Celebs who disagree? Theyr'e part of the "media elite" - rich snobs who hate the working class. Not Republican? You're a French loving "liberal" who want your tax dollars to give to black people. Everything's chocolate or vanilla. No other flavors on planet GOP. Is Babs annoying when she waxes political? Yep. Should it bother you enough to buy a book about it? Not if you're normal. But at least Babs has the ability to sing. What can Ingrham do? Don't bother to sing, hon. I would be happy if you would just shut the hell up.
Rating: Summary: Elites Exposed! Review: Bravo Laura! Way to go. Exposing the anit-American elitest mind set of many of our leaders and public figues. I highly reccommend this book to liberals and conservatives alike. Trying to cut through the lies in an over-communicated society can be hard for some. This book helps.
Rating: Summary: Almost as grating in print as she is on the radio Review: I'm an occasional listener of Ingraham's radio show, and because she is constantly plugging her book I figured I had to take a look at it (I read a copy from the library- don't THINK I payed money for this garbage!). I don't know what to think about Ingraham, and why she's so disdainful of others. I imagine she's a very lonely woman.
Rating: Summary: This is supposed to be some kind of political book? Review: I read this one fully expecting to agree with everything she said in it. I'm so sick of hearing what Sean Penn has to say about the war in Iraq or what Charlton Heston has to say about guns for that matter. What I got was a really simplistic political diatribe from someone who's only sincere feeling seems to be that people who disagree with her shouldn't be aloud to speak. It totally changed my mid, but not in he direction that she meant. This book is shrill and her argument boils down to, these knee-jerky celebrities disagree with what I think so they should shut up. It made me realize that these people are Americans and get to say what they want whether I, or for that matter, Laura Ingraham like it or not. The fact is, we shouldn't' like it if someone claimed that oil executives should never get to try to influence public policy, it would be anti-American, so is this book. Keeping people from speaking their minds is wrong, that's all. This book is a boring white-bred country-club patriotism book about the "Hollywood elite" which is code for anyone the author doesn't like.
Rating: Summary: yet more fuel to the fire Review: ... The Mississippi contribution is a transparent hoax ("Peggy Sue Johnson? puh-lease!). Rather than betray the shortcomings of Chicago's "bastion" of education, it might be wiser to let such things just lie there and fester, with the prospect that similarly unwary readers might be influenced by them. But then, that assumes too much. To Floyd-from-Ohio's plea for someone to tell him why L.I. is more qualified to comment on political matters than "lifelong activists" like Martin Sheen and Mike Ferrel (sic), I will volunteer an answer: her IQ exceeds the total of Sheen's and Ferrell's added together. The book is effective; it accomplishes everything it sets out to do. L.I. is brilliant and charming, both in print and on the air, and the title is clever. The only reason I give a book like this one less than five stars is personal: I prefer to read material that is a bit heavier.
Rating: Summary: Boring, predictable, right-wing hate/spin Review: I thought her "talk show" was bad, but this book puts the shrill voice on the radio to shame. Remember what Monica did to Bill in the White House? Well this is the book version of the same sex act performed by Laura on GW Bush. Apparently, she has no shame. I wouldn't use this book (...), much less recommend it as something useful to read.
Rating: Summary: A book worth reading, whether you agree or not. Review: The author doesn't pretend to be non-partisan, though she says that the "elites" she doesn't like belong to both parties. Ingraham has a morning radio program that clearly espouses the conservative line, and, of course, so does her book. She finds fault with a lot of elites, including, and especially, the Hollywood left. The wealthy and famous Hollywood crowd clearly are very skilled at playing make believe. They are very skilled at making a lot of money. Few of them have any education beyond high school and acting school. Many of them are probably feeling a little guilty living in such luxury while the rest of us pretty much have to scratch out our living the hard way, in the real world instead of the fairy land the Hollywood stars live in. They sooth some of their guilt by being liberal Democrats going to bat for the poor people, who have a right to be protected and kept up by the government, that is, the tax payers. This political position shows their "compassion" and proves they are really nice people. By hating George Bush and all Republicans in general, they show their sincerity. Socialism would be good for the rest of the country. They must think so, since it is clear that the Democrat party wants to move this country toward socialism. Anyway, anyone who thinks the Hollywood elite knows enough about politics and appropriate government policy to tell the rest of us how to vote are badly misled. These people are not any smarter than the rest of us. In fact, for the most part, less so. So, in the realm of politics, Ingraham is right. They would all be better served if they would just "shut up and sing", or act and not use their celebrity to tell the rest of us how to vote. Ingraham isn't very polite in conveying her message. She does some name calling. Shame on you, Laura. But, inspite of your faults, you have more justification for commenting on politics than the leftist Hollywood stars. You do know what you are talking about most of the time.
Rating: Summary: Awesome/Shedding light on worthless hollywood Review: Liberals who read this book can do nothing but hate the fact that Laura makes them realize what foul and obnoxious opinions they express. Any open minded, intelligent, political follower will enjoy this book and should tune in to Laura's radio show also. She has tremendous insight into the political world and the conspirators (within our very own wonderful country) who try to tear down any government that doesn't attempt to shine superior lighting on thier wasteful lives and high society lifestyles. Read the book, form your own opinion, don't let these radical liberals warp your train of thinking and persuade you to condemn a government you should be applauding! U.S.A. If you don't love it, get the hell out of it!!!
