Rating: Summary: The best VW Book ever. Review: I have owned 5 VW's in my life time and wouldn't be with out this book. I have overhauled several bug engines and a bus engines following this book with great success. I have had everything from a '63 bus to a '75 bus with a few bugs in between (a friend and I even put together a 2 cylinder bug engine) with each vehicle I would purchase a copy of " How to Keep your VW Alive" and when I sold the Vehicle I would offer the book to the new owner. I have given copies of the book to friends with VWs and a copy to my son when he bought a '74 bug several years ago. In the summer 1973 my sister, her child of 5, and husband left the USA for a tour of Europe by VW bus. I gave them a copy of Muirs book and it helped keep them "Keep on Trucking" on thier merry way.
Rating: Summary: If I could give it six stars, I would. Review: Don't buy a VW until you've got your hands on this book. I found it in Australia by pure luck before buying a bus and setting off with my wife on the northern coastal route from Perth to Sidney. 35,000 km and five months later, I, a total klutz at mechanics, had kept our 20 year old VW on the road, through electrical problems, snapped shock absorbers, oil changes, tune ups, desert bull dust and a two-day destruction derby called the Gibb River Road ("Warning. This road is unsuitable for conventional vehicles" the sign said...). Its descriptions of procedures and the accompanying illustrations are a model of clarity. Its practical advice is cast iron. Most of all, its a joy to read - warm, funny and with a kind of sideways philosophy to it that everyone who runs an old VW will share. Hell, even if you're not planning to buy a VW, get the book anyway. It'll probably change your mind.

Rating: Summary: Love da Book, it has saved my life and limb more than once! Review: It all began in 1970, with my first VW, a 1967 Squareback, found in a backyard in our nation's capitol. I had to replace all hoses, belts and external gaskets, plus overhaul the dual Solex carbs(not covered bu the Guide!) just to get that babe running. It was worth it! That $200.00 car took me and my sweethart to the Grand Canyon and further, and was sold to a man who had a lot of money and time on his hands. The "Guide" has helped me through 14 or so VW's, including a "66 Ghia, '78 2 liter van and a 412 4-speed wagon(actual German edition). Now I own an '81 Vanagon, an '84 rabbit deluxe, and several parts cars on my property. Thanks be to John Muir

Rating: Summary: Excellent VW Book Review: Most of the book is straight forward, clear and to the point. Probably one of the best automotive books around, that's geared towards the novice technician. The book will definitely get you and your bug running on 4 cylinders. The only bad point to the book is it was written by a flower child, so he gives you advice like "Have happy people been here ...."
Rating: Summary: The VW Bible Review: This is the ultimate VW book and truly is the "bible" for the "People's Car." This book is a must have and if you were able to have only one book about the VW this one would be it. This book shows the reader the most important facts on how to keep your Beetle on the road and in "tip top" condition. If you were to ask any volkswagen owner about this book they would tell you that this one is the only one you need. This book has been around for years and is highly recommended. This is the best VW book ever written!!
Rating: Summary: you can always get your volkswagen out of the desert Review: A must have for all air cooled vw owners.....
Rating: Summary: You need this book. Review: I first bought this book in 1973. If you don't buy it, you shouldn't be driving. The author's comment about tying your hippie hair back so as to not get it caught on a running engine is priceless!
Rating: Summary: A Classic Review: I first bought this book back in the 70's, when I think Muir was still alive. It completely captured the hippie, VW era, of which I was a part of, in Big Sur, CA. Step by step instructions for everything VW. Today, I am going to buy it just to read and remember an era long past, and wish I could bring back. I am glad it is still in print, because it perfectly matches the machine with the intended owners. I realize the Eurovan crowd will not be doing any repairs, but for those with 70-80's era buses, it is a must have.
