Rating: Summary: The VW Beetle repair manual for beginners- with diagrams. Review: This book has found worldwide acceptance by Volkswagen owners around the world. Its the only book I have found written, for someone who doesn't know anything about the Car they are driving. Its also called the VW owners "BIBLE"... and most wouldn't be without their copy. Its usually found under the bonnet or rear seat of Most Beetles. The illustrations are funny, clever and instructive, all at the same time....
This book has saved many a holiday or trip by a Beetle owner.
Most of the time a beetle breaks down, it is a simple thing, and can usually be fixed on the side of the road. You will need some tools- and Mr Muir will tell You what tools to buy, and show You what they look like... If You ONLY buy ONE Book for Your Volkswagen and You have never pulled one apart before...
Then - this IS the book for You.

Rating: Summary: keep your VW alive Review: this is the best book I've read on VW's
I first got this back in 70's with my first VW.
I've read it and read it, and thanks to this book I was able to rebuild my car on the beach down in Mexico.
it is clear to understand and very easy.
have you heard of the 'Dummy Books'?
I think this is the first one ever publised.
and might have inspirted the now famous trend toward books for people of normal inteligence.
I like this book, and the pictures are fun too.
Rating: Summary: THE PERFECT VW MANUAL! Review: I bought this book, and I love it! It is very humerous and serious at the same time! The step-by-step instructions are very detailed and easy to follow. A must have for the VW owner or just a VW FAN!
Rating: Summary: Super Book for Super Car Review: At 16 all I wanted was a Beetle. Well, after purchasing and rebuilding a bug with my dad, he gave me this book for Christmas to help me when I moved out. I had the car for three years, the book was a blessing, it helped me out of many a tight spot, and you don't really need any mechanical experience to understand it. Awesome book! Well worth the money!
Rating: Summary: Hey Kids..... Review: If you own a air-cooled VW, you gotta have this book. Period. My brother first owned this book and gave it to me when I bought a 65 Beetle when I was 16. It saved me on numerous occasions, since I was dumb as a box of rocks, and today am not a whole lot better. Peter Ascwanden's illustrations are superb and there are some funny ones in there as well. Muir's book is worth much more than the purchase price. I know some high knowledge guys will think that this work of car maintenance, literature and Zen combined is too simplistic, but I promise you, it will save you time, money and brain cells. John Muir even explains where stuff is depending on where you are standing looking at the car. I am the compleat idiot, so who better to recommend this book? BTW, I still miss my bug......
Rating: Summary: A Usable Classic Review: Muir's book is a venerable classic, enjoyed for its whimsical & attractive illustrations, light-hearted philosophizing, wry sense of humor, & period charm. It also remains the best practical book of Volkswagen maintenance & repair that is to be had. Many a time I've found myself beside the road with the Idiot's Guide in one hand, & pair of pliers in the other, & my head in the engine compartment. The Idiot's Guide has yet to fail me.
It's comprehensive in scope (with some minor exceptions such as transmission overhaul, which in any case would be folly to attempt with nothing more than the guidance of a book of this nature). As other reviewers have mentioned, the hand-drawn illustrations are top-notch, & isolate the detail needed for the task being described. The descriptions themselves are clear & effective, if interspersed with lots of woolly rambling & wisecracking. In fact, the digressions & style in which the nuts-&-bolts advice is couched are actually an asset to understanding the maintenance & repair of your VW. They instill a mindset that will be one of the best tools in your toolkit.
If you own an old VW, you ought to have the Idiot's Guide too. With this & perhaps the Official Service Manual (i.e., ISBN 0837600944 ), you'll have all the know-how you'll need to keep your VW going for another thirty years.
Rating: Summary: If it's like the original, this is the ONLY one you'll need! Review: You could get Chilton's, or VW's guide - I did when I owned my '68 bug and later a '72 square back when I was in college (73-77). But the only guide that really worked for me was the original. How can you go wrong with a description of the Starter Motor of
Rating: Summary: The First Book to buy for air-cooled engine car owner Review: I never regretted buying this book. Your best asset to be able to correctly choose (buy) your air-cooled engine vehicule, to learn tips on how to drive it and to do all your maintenance/troubleshooting yourself! For the complete idiot : really easy to follow! Nice clear drawings. Combine with your workshop manual - you're all set!
