Rating: Summary: A perplexing, thought-provoking book. Review: Just by picking up the book and reading its cover, I knew what happened to Chris. When I started reading it however, I found myself rooting for his success and wishing he were still alive. Krakauer's method of telling such a tragic tale is truly an artform.
Rating: Summary: This book will enlighten you.... Review: This is definitely on the top of my list. What a fascinating story that sheds light on many issues we are plagued with today. From the excerpts of the diary to the interviews with his family and strangers met on this adventure, Into The Wild will at the least expand your horizon of what is or is not rational thinking and how in some way, we are all looking for some of the same thing's. BEST ADVICE: If you don't care too much for rambling, skip or browse through Chapters 14 & 15.
Rating: Summary: Alternative lifestyle taken to the extreme Review: An extremely well written book that makes us familiar with a very different lifestyle -- people who enjoy, and exalt themselves in, what many of us would consider unremitting pain and isolation. Sympathetic fellow-traveller journalist Krakauer reviews the life of Christopher McCandless, a young man who died trying to survive alone in the Alaskan wilderness, and through his life and death give us an understanding of the urges to solitude and deprivation that gave McCandless such fulfillment yet led to his death. In these days when anything dangerous is viewed with great suspicion, it is valuable to read something that shows us that risky behavior can be, for whatever reason, immensely fulfilling to those who knowingly choose to engage in it. McCandless, dying and knowing he was dying, made it as clear as he could that he wouldn't change a single major choice he made in his doomed young life. Krakauer does a fine job describing both the attractions of McCandless's lifestyle and the traps inherent in it that led to McCandless's death.
Rating: Summary: Capitvating tale of a lost soul Review: Into the Wild is a tragedy. In this well-written tale, the author describes a young man who, in the end of a lonely journey, dies a very slow death alone. I think in the end he regretted his self-imposed situation. His mother describes waking from a vivid dream of Chris crying out to her. At that moment I believe he wanted help and wanted to be among the living.
Rating: Summary: A compassionate rendering of a tragic tale Review: I found myself so wishing that things had worked out for Chris, that he had gone through his need to find whatever he was looking for, and returned alive and the better for his search. Mr. Krakauer has written a book that should touch the seeker in all of us. It should encourage us to have some compassion for those who look so hard to find meaning in this life and yet can fail tragically in that search. One does not have to go all that far to find such people. I do wish there were more people like Chris, a man who took his life seriously. I am grateful that there are people like Mr. Krakauer who enable us to remember Chris and hopefully learn from his life.
Rating: Summary: The plight of a LOST young man, or is it.... Review: Lost in the wild is the story of a young man, Chris McCandles, who comes from a very well off family and has a pretty good future ahead of him after graduating from college. Alas, Chris isn't one of the "normal" people in life, but a wanderer who is not content with living a life dictated to him. He sets off on a cross country trek that culminates in his journey to Alaska, which is where he will be, forever, remembered. His journey from coast to coast is that of a vagabond, yet he is happy, happy that he is LIVING life, and not just living it. A truly good story that could do with out the authors injection of experiences, but non the less, a good story of LIVING life.
Rating: Summary: Interesting story throughout, but questions remain. Review: Did McCandless vandalize those cabins? Has the bus become a popular destination now that he spent his time in it and died there?
Rating: Summary: Can not put the book down Review: The story touched me in a place I didn't know existed. It was so hard for me to believe a man like this existed and I was fascinated to find out what drove him to his death and lonliness. Even though I never found out exactly what it was, the story of "Supertramp" was fascinating.
Rating: Summary: Man with a Dream, fulfills it to his Death... Review: Jon Krakauer portrays the life of a young man with a dream to go "Into the Wild". This book was an amazing portrayal of just this. After writing an article skimming the topic in an issue of the "Outdoor" Magazine, he was moved, and decided to recreate the life of this man. He researched through family, and friends of Chris McCandless. And succeded in putting all of the gathered knowledge into one horrifically true novel. This is truly a great read.
