Summary: These books by Lund are absolutely captivating !!
Review: A family member started reading these books and when she was through with vol. 1-3, passed them around. I couldn't believe all the excitement that the books generated, so I started reading them myself. At the rate I'm going, I'll have all 9 vol. read by summer. It's almost impossible to put these books down. Their popularity is spreading like wild fire. I can guaranty you that this book will be read more than once.

Summary: Captivating Series - A must read historical series for All
Review: After reading the entire eight books in this series, I can unequivocally recommend that everyone read them. Even those who are not of the LDS faith will gain a deep, rich understanding of the plight and struggles of the pioneers who explored this great country. The author has a wonderful knack for captivating his audience, and has made the fictitional Steed family seem as real as if they were actually there. Bravo to Gerald Lund and his staff of researchers. - Erick

Summary: Heavy on the "fiction"
Review: For a person wanting a "Little House on the Prarie" imatation I suppose that it is tolerable, however the characters are superficial and the story line is trite. You will find the stereo-typical unrealistically good brother, the extremely wicked brother, and the love interests. The representation of females through the first 3 books ( I didn't read any further books) is reprehensible! Wretched creatures that can do little more than flirt, have babies and cry. As far as anyone that wants to learn the history of the LDS church, skip this book and pick up a book by a real historian at the library. After reading much of LDS history written by those who make it their profession to create a dispasionate and accurate historical account, I find this series very disapointing. There is little of real historical interest in these books - what is there is so dilute it removes any of the real facination in the history of this religion.

Summary: So Enjoyable
Review: Gerald Lund writes his books in a way that it is so easy and enjoyable to read. I read all nine of The Work and the Glory and I read all three of The Kingdom and the Crown books. These books have fictional characters mingling with real people who once lived. It is an amazing and very impressionable way to tell a story.

Summary: This is a book that will make you a reader.
Review: Gerald N. Lund is a great writer. You get really in to this book. I am reading the 2nd volume right now and plan to read the whole series by the end of the school year. Once you start you can't stop.

Summary: This is one of my favorite books I've ever read!
Review: Gerald N. Lund is so good at writing. He brings you back to the early history of the church with the Steed family. It makes you understand the churches beginning so much better. I feel like I'm there with them. I can't wait until more volumes come out.

Summary: A real attention getter!!!!
Review: I have found myself many times awake very late at night either reading or thinking about these books. Some of my ancestors have been mentioned a few times and it is very interesting to me to read and learn about them. As soon as I finish one, I begin the next book in the series. No other book has held me as captivated as these have. Even though each book is very lengthy, you will find the pages flying by. Definately a five-star series!!!

Summary: This would make an excellent mini-series
Review: I have just started on Volume 8 of this series, and I have just one word to describe this series of books-superb. This is drama brought to life. The historical detail, the descriptions of scenes, the backdrops and the story all testify to a master author. These books would make an excellent mini-series on television and would have a wide appeal because of the drama involved (eg. the persecutions and the sufferings) and the glorious things brought to light. Once you get started reading this series, you will get hooked. I started reading volume 1 in November and am now on volume 8.

Summary: Once is definitely not enough!!!
Review: I have read the entire series of 8 books twice, and will certainly do it again! No other series of books has captivated me the way this one has. Following the struggles and triumphs of the early saints and becoming totally enthralled with the Steed family has brought me laughter and tears. We have shared these books with members and non-members of our extended family, and all of us anxiously await volume 9. Thank you Gerald Lund for sharing your heart and soul with us!!!
