Summary: The Puritans
Review: If the rest of the books in the American Family Portrait Series in anything like the first book, this is a series you will want to read. The Puritans was the first book I have read by Jack Cavanaugh and I've been hooked ever since. In this book he displays how the Puritans fled to a country where they could practice their religion freely. It also includes romance and even a little suspense. The author's way of writing is easy to read and to follow. If you enjoy The American Family Portrait, look for his Songs in the Night series.

Review: In an era when we are bombarded with gratuitous violence and sex, "The Puritans" is a welcome respite. While it may be Christian historical fiction, please don't think that plot and character have been sacrificed. In fact, Cavanaugh does a superb job of creating characters we really care about, and the plot is anything but predictable. Plus, all this is happening in front of an historically accurate setting. It's just nice to sit down with a good book that you know isn't going to surprise you with a lot of unnecessary vulgarity, violence, or sex. I intend to read the entire series.

Summary: Suspenseful, romantic, something for everyone
Review: Jack Cavanaugh really struck a cord with me in this book. His intertwining of history, romance and suspense is masterful. The historical explanations in the afterword are great even if history isn't one of your loves. This is a large novel but you don't notice it as the story is written so well that you just sit transfixed as time flies by. I fell in love with the characters and willed them to make the right decisions. Jack Cavanaugh has written a great first book to his American Family Portraits Series, this book leaves you desperate to read the next.

I was wisked away to 17th century England and learned many things about what drove the Puritans to imigrate to the American colonies. This is one of the greatest historical fiction novels that I have ever read.

Summary: This book was the best one I've EVER read!
Review: My best friend introduced me to The Puritans, by Jack Cavanaugh. Once I started I couldn't put the book down, literally. I read the entire book in 10 hours. I even cried, and if you can make me cry then the book is pretty darn good. I simply loved how Mr. Cavanaugh intertwined history with a fictional story. (Most books like that are boring.) The book had a great plot and was full of much needed emotions that stir the reader to take a deep look into themselves. Words can't do this book justice so I'll end in saying that I loved the Puritans, very, very much!

Summary: Well written, but quite violent
Review: This was a most interesting book. It starts us on a journey through the family of Drew Morgan. Which journey will end seven books later. The writing was good, the story well thought out, the characters mostly believable, and the history fairly accurate. If you like historical fiction, then you should try this series on for size.
