Rating: Summary: I loved this book Review: Sherrilyn has not let me down. I saw Night Pleasures at the store and i thought I would give it a try, now I can't get enough. I raced out and got Dance with the Devil. Zerek's story made me cry and root for the good guy. When Astrid was sent to judge him he didn't feel that he should fight destiny. But I'm glad that he won her love and could trust someone he cared about. Ash and Artemis fight long and hard to decide his fate but it's Astrid who has the last word. You'll laugh, you'll cry you will be glad that you got this book. Read it and then you will want to buy the others, just like me.
Rating: Summary: disappointing Review: Unbelievable. With all that the character has suffered the reader would more readily believe that Zarek will go postal with a flame thrower than fall in love and be redemed. Even fantasy romances have to visit reality sometime and having spent the previous book in the series developing Zarek as a pathological character you cannot turn around and cure him in 300 odd pages. Some stories only exist to carry you from one sex scene to another... this one barely reaches that level.
Rating: Summary: What a book. Review: I for one, fell in love with Zarek. I wanted to take him home with me and make him warm and happy. This was a very touching story and broke my heart. For all his life Zarik has been tortured in one way or another. It makes you want to make everything all better. Now, I am not usually big on fantasy novels, but I have to recommend the Dark Hunter novels. They are not like your normal romances and gives it something a little different to liven things up. I have read all four books in the series so far, and have to say Go For It! You will not regret it. Ill be looking for the next book to come out. Impatiently. Enjoy!!!!
Rating: Summary: Fun non-threatening fantasy book! Review: I enjoy stories that are non-threatening fantasy stories. This book flipped the bill! I liked it!
Rating: Summary: A Promising Idea, But Ultimately a Disappointment Review: This is a standard romance novel cloaked in a fantasy setting. Through dreams and flashbacks we learn that Zarek is a tortured soul -- having been both physically and psychologically abused as a slave during the heyday of the Roman empire. Our leading man has also spent 900 Years of Solitude being " the deadliest thing on the tundra." Zarek is soon introduced to Astrid, a nymph, sent by the gods to pass judgment on him for a crime that is never really explained. The two are isolated in a remote Alaskan cabin with Astrid's protector, Sasha. A promising set up, but the characters sit around staring at each other, whittling, or drinking hot chocolate while the blind Astrid continually asks Sasha "Where is he?" and "What is he doing?" Boring! Sex between Zarek and Astrid is described in truly awful writing: Astrid offers Zarek "a friendly smile that made his groin jerk," and "she yelped in ecstasy" and "for the first time in two thousand years, Zarek felt human." The author's habit of having her characters constantly calling each other cutsey names such as "Frosty the Snow-Zarek" becomes stupid instead of witty. And having the characters say things like "stars aren't supposed to cry, they're supposed to laugh" made me cringe. I truly wanted this book to be good. I love the Anita Blake novels and, of course, Ann Rice, so I thought this was a promising twist on a tired genre. A couple characters made me chuckle when it seemed the author wasn't trying too hard to be witty, but that's about the only time I really enjoyed the story. Overall, this is a standard romance novel with nothing truly new to offer.
Rating: Summary: Taking top honors in the tragic hero category... Review: Zarek is the epitome of the tortured hero rescued by love. You cannot help but love the poor man, and he certainly needs all the love and understanading he can get. Astrid is unusual and strong enough to complement him, but Zarek definitely steals the show. Minor character Simi is a treat as well, and Zarek's boss, Acheron, is most interesting, too. I'd love more on him. There are references to prior books, though I've not yet read those. Nevertheless, Kenyon creates a unique world: modern but intimately connected to past cultures (especially ancient Grrece and Rome). The humor is delightful, making use of gags and one-liners featuring popular culture ala Farscape. I did find all the quotes from "The Little Prince" a bit annoying, even though they relate to the romance. At the end of chapter one, I thought, "I'm not terribly impressed." Before I knew it, I was at the end of chapter 4 and enjoying myself immensely. The action is nearly non-stop, and the plot weaves so many disparate elements that the reader is never lulled into complacency--you may get a little lost once in a while, but you quickly recover. The novel is fast-paced and a quick read, except during the flashbacks of Zarek's long life, which need to be taken slowly because of their emotional impact. Excellent paranormal romance. But skip the short story at the end; it's nothing special.
Rating: Summary: Oh, you poor Zarek Review: For all of you that have read the prior Dark-hunter Novels, you know that no one can be as tragic as Sherrilyn Kenyon. Her characters have such character(for lack of better term) that there really is no choice but to fall helplessly in love with each of them. Zarek is surely no exception. You might even love him more when you get to know him. Yes, it's a romance, so you know how it will end, but it's everything in the middle that makes it all worth while. Very worth while. Real emotion and snappy dialogue make this book a must. Grab your kleenex.
Rating: Summary: Not Bad Review: This book was a good mindless read. The development of the characters was a bit soft, but it reads quickly. The ending was a bit premature and hasty.
Rating: Summary: Different Review: I picked this up because of the reviews on Amazon.com. I had mixed feelings about it. 1. I really liked Zarek and the story did prove that to really know someone you need to walk a mile in their shoes. He had every reason to be as nasty as he was in the beginning. My heart cried for him for what he went thru in his life. But with all that he had been thru for all of those hundreds of years - I would think it would have taken Astrid a lot longer to get him to come around to her than it did. 2. I agree with everyone - Simi was my favorite character. She offered some smiles that were desperately needed after being exposed to what Zarek's live had been like. 3. I know it was probably just me - it was my first experience with the series but I found that a lot of times I had a hard time keeping the "time" straight. Reading about the goddesses and the daimons, etc. I felt like we were back in time and then Zarek would reach for a cell phone and it would startle me back into realizing the book is present time. You would feel old world and then someone would mention a current tv show. 4. Maybe I haven't experienced that all consuming lust that Astrid and Zarek felt for each other, but if you were being chased by a creature that was going to kill you, would you go back to your house and then make love there - knowing the creature was coming? 5. I found that I couldn't put the book down, but I don't think this is a series that can or should be read out of order. I'm going to go back and pick up the other books in the series and try to read them in the order they were written. If I had read them in order, maybe it would have helped me understand it and the timing in history better and not leave me with the feeling of being off balance. To many times I felt like the author was counting on you knowing everything from the past books in the series to understand some of the references she made to things and people. All in all - 4 stars. I'm looking foward to finding her other books in the series to read them. I would recommend Dance with the Devil, but if you haven't read the other books before this one, I would suggest you start with the earlier ones first and work up to Dance with the Devil.
Rating: Summary: I want more! Review: I loved this book. Zarek's story has been my favorite so far. I am so happy I found this series, and I can't wait to read the next.
