Rating: Summary: An universal truth of how women behave Review: I read this book in about three days, and laugh and cry alone (this is not very common, specially with a book)and I could see myself doing the same things, telling me the same lies and I wish, in the future, making the same moves. It is so real, that you have to admit it and laugh... a lot and at loud. Read it if you feel like nobody can understand the situation you are living as a single women. We are plenty in this world, believe me.
Rating: Summary: like it Review: i thought this was a great bok..cant wait to read more of marian keyes novels
Rating: Summary: Why did it have to end? Review: Last Chance Saloon is the first Marian Keyes book that I have read and I enjoyed it so much that I'm planning on reading more. The best part of this book was its characters that I felt was realistically written and strong enough for me to care about. The main focus is on three best friends Katherine, Tara, and Fintan who grew up together in Ireland and are all now living in London. Each one of them has their own personal problems to work through to get themselves out of the "Last Chance Saloon" Katherine, the "Ice Queen" is so frightened to enter a relationship and she has developed a "I'll hurt them before they hurt me" attitude, Tara is living with a boyfriend who is making her life miserable but yet she is afraid of a life without a man in her life, and Fintan who has a loving relationship with his boyfriend Sandro has Cancer and is fighting for his life. While Fintan is battle cancer and is receiving chemotherapy he makes two request of his best friends, he asks Katherine to start dating and he asks Tara to leave her boyfriend. All three have many battles to face before they can get out of the Last Chance Saloon and the path to the exit is not an easy one. This was a very enjoyable book and I found it comical and realistic. The characters were well written and I was really sorry that this book had to end. I already have Rachel's Holiday in my TBR pile and I plan to read more books by Ms. Keyes.
Rating: Summary: Marian Keyes continues to rock my world! Review: Last Chance Saloon--where a woman stands if she is over 30 and single, at least according to Tara, one of a small group of friends who have known each other since their days in a small town in Ireland. She has spent her adult life jumping from bad boyfriend to bad boyfriend and is presently with a really bad one. Thomas calls her a fat cow, monitors her candy consumption, and is generally nasty to her, "for her own good." Tara's best friend Katherine is in a Last Chance Saloon of her own creation. Seriously devastated by a series of painful relationships, she creates an image of "Ice Queen" to avoid getting too close to love. All of this changes when Fintan, their third best friend, faces catastrophe. Keyes explores thoughts all women have had, from "Is this as good as it gets?" to "How hurt will I get by getting too close?", all with wit and humor. You will not be disappointed by Last Chance Saloon!
Rating: Summary: Keyes with a Difference Review: On the surface, "The Last Chance Saloon" has all of the elements of a classic Marian Keyes novel: delightful Irish-born friends transplanted to London; their hilarious thirty-something adventures; their wonderful bonhomie; and the sheer loveable nature of just about every character in the story (there always has to be one bad guy--and this one, Lorcan, is a humdinger). But there is a major difference in this book--a serious, life-altering undertone as one of the close-knit friends, fabulously gay and wonderful Fintan--contracts cancer. As we follow each of the main characters through his or her daily life and adventures, through love affairs gone sour and new affairs that might be "the one," everything is played out against the backdrop of Fintan's increasingly terrifying decline. And each of these relatively young people, who thought they had loads of time to "find themselves" and a mate and a meaningful life, are strongly affected by their dear friend's suffering. Woven into this tale, even with the cancer, are Keyes' trademark hilarities. I don't know how she does it, but each of her characters--from Fintan's "Irish mammy" and his two clomping farm-bred brothers from Ireland, feckless Tara and her horrible live-in boyfriend Thomas, who dresses all in brown and "says as he sees" (always an insult), to the supermodel-type blonde Swedish Liv, always on the edge of depression, to Katharine, strangely cold and enigmatic, each has his or her moment of side-splitting insight from the reader's point of view. This book was not as fluffy and fun to read as, say, "Watermelon," but it is worth its weight in gold. If you haven't read any Marian Keyes, you are doing yourself a major disservice!
Rating: Summary: Last CHance Saloon Review: STarted off somewhat slow, but ended with a BANG! I LOVED this read....got completly involved in it. It was hillariouse and devistating at the same time!
Rating: Summary: Not so funny Review: The firsy book I have read from Marian Keyes was Under Duvet. It was super. But Lucy sullivan disappointed me. This one is better but I did not find it humourous.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, funny, entertaining.... Review: This book has it all, the funny sarcastic 30 something humour, the over inflated egos, the low self esteem-weight problem issues. But it has so much more, its not the situations that makes it an unique and interesting tale but the realistic way in which the characters face them. This book is about friendship and loyalty and about the things you do for your self and the ones you love when you realize how much you are worth. A MUST READ!
Rating: Summary: Fabulous, seriously Review: This book is wonderful! Earthy humor, friendships, and on occasion, serious issues, which is why I wouldn't call it a "beach read".
Rating: Summary: One freaking hilarious and moving book. Review: This has been my first Mariam Keyes novel, and man, I cannot wait to read them all. I don't usually read chick lit, and I don't know what made me buy it. Maybe it was the cover, staring at me, but it must have been faith. This is a wonderful book, with characters so witty, funny, sad, whom made me laugh so hard, that I had tears in my eyes (especially Tara's visit to the spa, page 300, that had me howling in laughter to the point where I thought I was going to choke) and Katherine's cold and evil looks she gave men, that made them want to run away crying, Fintan was the character who brought them all together and changed their lives radically. This is a phenomenal read that made me truly sad when it was over. Read it, you'll love it, even if this usually isn't your cup of tea. Cheers,
