Rating: Summary: A modern day romance Review: This is truly a modern day romance. I like the way that this book is written. It has humor and I can really picture people saying these words to each other and the events happening. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Rating: Summary: A Fresh Spin On An Old Tale Review: I read this book only because Jeanne Ray is the mother of one of my favorite authors Ann Patchett. I was not disappointed -- this is a charming read and clever to boot! According to Ann Patchett, her mother wrote this book to make a statement of sorts -- women heading into their late fifties and sixties still fall in love. This book speaks to a much larger audience though, and I look forward to Jeanne Ray's next book. How exciting that great writing runs in this family, Ann Patchett's, "Patron Saint of Liar's," is an excellent introduction to this wonderful author (in this case, like daughter -- like mother).
Rating: Summary: A Keeper! Review: Absolutely adorable story, hard to put down, I can't believe it's her first book, can't wait for the next one! Especially appealing, I think, to those of us over 50, so true to life!
Rating: Summary: bh cass pd 4 Review: I would say that this book was a quick and easy read. It was hilarious and kept me into the book so I never put it down. Some parts made me laugh and others made me so mad at some of the kids. I never would think that two families could hate each other so much. It kept me wondering why they were in a fued. One of my favorite parts was when Romeo and Julie went to Romeo's flower shop and Romeo's son was sleeping there. I would have been completely humiliated if I was Julie. Although is was a short novel and it was her first, it did have a good deal of content. I always enjoy a book that actually makes you feel like a part of the story. Plus it kept me interested on the modern twist it has from the original Shakespeare story, with a happier ending though! I would reccommend this book to anyone who was looking for a comical short read. I enjoyed this book and would like to see her have some new novels come out soon.
Rating: Summary: bh casserly pd4 Review: For such a short novel this book sure made me feel all different emotions. I laughed, felt sorry for everyone and even felt hatred towards others. It was an easy read and hard for me to put down. I would recommend this book to anyone who was looking for a short comical read.
Rating: Summary: Charming! Review: My book club needed something a little light for this month. This book was recommended and it was JUST what the "doctor" ordered. It was charming, fun and lighthearted. If you are looking for something fun to read - this is a great choice.
Rating: Summary: An adorable first novel!!!! Review: I really liked Julie & Romeo because it was such a quick read. It wasn't as deep as most of the novels I usually read but it was cute because of the romance of 2 sixty year old people. It was almost like Romeo & Juliet because of the family rivalries. The author did a good job & it was very easy reading that didn't bore me like othere novels. I would've given it 5 stars if it were a bit more deep. But it was worthwhile reading it & very enjoyable!1
Rating: Summary: Very light read. Review: Although I enjoyed the story, I was a bit disappointed. It lacked depth of characters. It didn't help that I just finished Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice so perhaps I was expecting a lot. I would recommend it to someone who wants to read a book in a day or two. It was a sweet story but I wanted MORE.
Rating: Summary: Love story with a twist Review: For such a short novel, Julie and Romeo sure packs a punch! Jeanne Ray has taken a classic Shakespeare tragedy and put on a lighthearted, fun spin. Easy flowing reading style and laughs sprinkled throughout, Julie and Romeo may be one of the most fun love stories I've read in awhile. No, it's not the Montagues and Capulets who are at each others' throats. This time we come neck and neck with the Rosemans and Cacciamanis, two families and rival florists in a small Boston suburb. The rivalry has spanned three generations now, but only the eldest living, 90-year-old and still feisty, Mrs. Cacciamani, knows its origins. But when 60-year-old divorced Julie Roseman bumps into widowed Romeo Cacciamani at a small business conference, somehow all the hatred she had felt in the past for him seems to have disappeared. Let the love story begin, right? Not so fast. The rest of the Roseman and Cacciamani clan have a few things to say first.... I truly enjoyed the fun and relaxing pace of this novel. Julie and Romeo is cute and funny, but also sparks some heated moments when dealing with the rest of the feuding families. Not only that, but it deals with older adults falling in love again and provides proof that you're never too old to rediscover your giddy side. Very good debut novel. Hope to hear from Jeanne Ray again.
Rating: Summary: I just wasn't impressed... Review: This is a book that came up on my Amazon recommendations over and over and with the stellar reveiws from other readers I was prepared to be dazzled. I wasn't. Not that this was a bad book, it just doesn't seem like a whole lot of effort was put into it. The actual plot was a good jumping off point but it doesn't appear that much thought was put into fleshing it out, not to mention how highly unlikely these events would be in real life. Sure in Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet fell in love at first sight, but they were just kids who had never seen each other before. In Julie and Romeo, these two people have lived 60 years of life in the same community and for 60 years hated one another. I find it hard to belive 60 years of hate could end with a cup of coffe, a single date, a roll in the hay and a proclamation of love in less than 1 week. Things must sure move fast in Sommerville! This is just one of many examples in this book of things that didn't sit quite well with me. And speaking of things that didn't sit too well with me is the portrayal of Romeo's Italian family. Contrary to the sterotypes this book uses over and over again we do not all belong to the mafia, scream when we argue, have "litters" of children and hang out with the local priest. It was just a touch insulting and I do not even consider myself to be a very PC person. The spin on a love story from the older population was a nice touch, but its doubtful I would recommend this to anyone.
