Rating: Summary: I hope to see more of the Bridgertons! Review: This was an excellent book - funny and realistic dialog, quirky characters, and a hero who needs love so desperately. I hope Ms. Quinn writes about the other Bridgertons - the other 7 siblings deserve stories of their own, especially Anthony, Benedict and Colin.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This is the first Julia Quinn I have read. It took a total of 6 hours for me to read "The Duke and I", I just couldn't put it down! It was funny, sweet, romantic and irresistable. I hope she continues with another book on Anthony, Benedict, and Colin. I bet they can get into some sticky situations.
Rating: Summary: Cute Review: "Cute" is the best adjective that describes this book. If you are looking for the hero who rips the clothes off of the strong but virginal heroine...forget about it in this one. Yes there is passion, but there is lots of funny dialogue and interaction between all of the characters in this book. The story centers on a young lord determined never to marry because of a horrid relationship with a father who wanted the perfect son and instead, got a son who stuttered. He disowned him until he found out that the son had achieved inspite of his neglect. By then it was too late. The young Lord forms a pact with the sister of one of his college friends so that they both can be protected from the marriage seekers of the "ton" and from there the sparks fly between the two of them, as well as the brothers who want to protect her. If you like cute "romance lite" you'll like this story.
Rating: Summary: The Duke and I Review: This book was hard to put down! Hope the author will continue to write about Anthony, Benedict, Colin and the rest of the family!
Rating: Summary: Another Great Romance Review: Reading The Duke and I got me started reading all of the other Julia Quinn books. They are all as great as her newest title. I loved all of them. Julia is an extremely funny writer who is a joy to read. Her characters are bright, funny, articulate and a lot of fun to follow. All of the characters in The Duke and I are a lot of fun. We have the usual rakes just waiting to be reformed and properly married off. We also have the society maiden, sparkling and full of fun, but not quite ready to be drawn into the expectation of society. The character which comes as a bit of a surprise is the main heroine's mama, Violet. Her family and friends see her as nothing more than fluff. Her children adore her, but avoid her. What they are missing is that she leads her family just the way she wants them to be led without anybody being the wiser. The hero is also a bit of a surprise with a disability which has not been covered very often (or as effectively) in the romance world. Read The Duke and I. It's a lot of fun. Then check out Ms. Quinn's other books. If you like Jude Deveraux, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Amanda Quick, you will like Julia Quinn. I promise.
Rating: Summary: What a book! Review: I've never read a Julia Quinn book and I can't tell you how pleased I was by the wonderful character's and excellent story. The Duke and I was sweet, humorous and an enjoyable read all around. I have to say that if I hadn't read the reviews on Amazon I probably never would have picked this book up just browsing in the store, partially because it's longer than most Regency romances, and partially because there is a scantily clad man and woman on the back cover that seem more appropriate to the bodice ripping romance novels that I avoid. I'm not sure about anyone else but I love to read in public (i.e. airports, the dentist's or doctor's office, long lines etc...) and I'd rather not have that kind of cheesy back cover shouting out "hey everybody she's reading a romance book!" That aside, I really really recommend this book as a great escape from whatever you want to escape from.
Rating: Summary: WONDERFULLY ENTERTAINING Review: This is the first book I have read by Quinn and I have enjoyed it immensely. It had been recommended by a friend and now it's my turn to do the recommending. Despite a few heavier scenes, I would call this a fairly lighthearted romance filled with fun and laughter. Don't get me wrong though. The heavier scenes kept the story from being too fluffy or shallow. In fact, I would say it rounded the whole thing off quite nicely. The Whistledown reporter was a delightful addition and I was left wondering who exactly she was. I look forward to the next Quinn book to see if we actually do find out her identity. I especially enjoyed the scenes where Simon joined the family for dinner and later an outing to Greenwich. Simon was a wonderful hero; strong, handsome, great sense of humor, and his one "inadequacy" was endearing, although HE might not think so. Daphne was a terrific heroine. Charming, witty, and if not wise in the world, wise in matters of the heart. But, for me, of course it was Hyacinth that stole the show.
Rating: Summary: Quick historical Review: I really enjoyed this quick read. Not only were Daphne and the Duke fun and interesting characters, but all the secondary characters were delightful. Highly recommend Julia Quinn.
Rating: Summary: Entranced From Cover to Cover... Review: I was mesmerized with Simon Basset, a hero who had to overcome a thoughtless, if not cruel and self-absorbed father and a stuttering problem at a young age. You don't normally expect a historical novel to open up with the hero's childhood story or how he is trying to overcome a speech impediment! But then, The Duke and I is not your average boys gets girl story. Simon returns from a 5 year hiatus from London (from his globe trotting) when he learns of his father's passing. When he reenters the London society, he finds that he is a prey to the mothers of the ton! And the last thing he ever wants is holy matrimony with anyone! Of course, with an interesting hero like that, you need an equally fascinating heroine! Daphne "Daffy" Bridgerton is the 4th children of 8, who seems to be an all-around nice girl and everyone's friend. In today's terms, perhaps just "one of the guys"- who's still single after 2 years out in The Season. Not the usual faint-of-the-heart girls you find amongst the ton, of course! She's got a sense of humor and wit that will make your pants off! And not afraid to challenge the baffled duke! They form a fake alliance to thwart off baracuda-like mothers of the ton who want to marry their daughters off the the duke and foppish silly nitwits who think "being a nice girl" is the only trait necessary for a successful marriage. What you get is two incredible characters who fight true love... or at least try to. And what they find is that you can't fight destiny... no matter how hard you try. Their chemistry is amazing! The dialogue is hillarious most of the time and secondary characters are just endearing! I was grinning and cackling to myself from the beginning to the end! So far, The Duke And I is my favorite Julia Quinn novel to date! I was trying to find every possible moment to read this book! At the red light, between emails, waiting in line at the movie theatre, etc! After reading How To Marry A Marquis, I was a bit reluctant to to start on The Duke & I... I honestly didn't expect Julia Quinn to top HTMAM! But she did. She certaintly did and left me hanging for more... the sequel on Anthony Bridgerton's story! (The Viscount Who Loved Me... I love these titles!)
Rating: Summary: A weekend read! Review: I really enjoyed this book. I purchased the book on Saturday and finished it on Sunday. Chores were ignored as I read on and on. I have a love / hate relationship with books like this, I love the book but hate that it is over within a matter of days. Looking forward to her next book!
