Summary: Virginia Henley does It Again!
Review: I have now read every novel written by Ms. Henley (except "The Marriage Prize"). This was an incredible book that I was not able to put down. It was a great read, from start to finish. She never disappoint's me, and, fortunately, has not taken the same road as other romance writers, delving into "mystery and intrigue." Virginia Henley has the formula for crafting great romantic fiction and she did not disappoint this time around. I recently saw the movie "Gladiator" and it was enjoyable, because the character in that movie seemed to step right out of the pages of Ms. Henley's book. Her depiction of Roman life, right down to the mannerism's, language and attire was incredible. This was a very poignant story and the only time I ever shed tears is when I read one of Ms. Henley's novels. She is, as far as I am concerned, the standard bearer. I hope she continues to write for a long while!

Summary: If you must read Virginia Henley, this is the best one
Review: Virginia Henley's novels are, like most in the romance genre, highly predictable--outspoken, beautiful heroines a little too modern for their surroundings, handsome, dark-haired alpha males who are unbelievably stubborn and narrow minded, and miscommunication as plot advancement--and let's not forget the sex scenes! However, "Enslaved" is just a cut above Ms. Henley's usual historical erotica, because she tones down everything just a bit. The scenes in Roman-controlled Britain are surprisingly well-written, and her hero, Marcus, is acually--gasp!--a sympathetic character. Diana is a typical Henley heroine (we know she has violet eyes, Virginia, you don't have to keep telling us), but again, a little toned down so as to be sympathetic as well. In short, a good story, a decent plot, an inventive setting. If you're an occasional romance reader, this is a good one with which to while away a rainy weekend.

Summary: Pretty good...
Review: I've heard a lot about Virginia Henley. This book was good, but it wasn't as great as I expected it to be. There is a lot of hot sex, but I think that it can be a bit melodramatic at times. Also, Marcus is never mean enough to be thrilling. He falls in love with her too quickly.

Summary: Truely Mesmorizing!
Review: I became imensely engrosed in this book and couldn't put it down from page one! It was full of rich and colorful descriptions of life in the ancient Roman empire. The characters had an amazing and defiant chemistry between them. The book stimulates your senses and you feel the twists and turns and conflicts of the plot through mind, body and soul. I was especially dismayed, then surprised and delighted by the twist in the ending. I strongly recomend this to any historical time travel romance fan.

Summary: If you're looking for something steamy....
Review: One complaint I have about Virginia Henley's novels is that her characters follow traditional male/female ideals too closely. For example, Diana, the heroine, is described as intellectual, yet the main focus of the book is sex.

There are a few parts of the book which are not worth reading, such as the beginning before Diana travels back in time to 1st century Brittainia. I found Henley's description of Roman life to be intriguing, mixing historical details with her fictional characters imperceptibly.

I would not recommend this book for someone looking for a moving love story....but if you're in the mood for hot, bawdy sex...this book is for you!

Summary: Rome never excited me more!
Review: This book is my absolute favorite out of all Ms. Henley's novels (and I own all of them to date!). When I first heard about the time travel novel, I was unbelieving that she would be able to pull it off... but she did without a hitch. I simply love the characters in this book! THey all seem to have in underlying identity. Dame Lightfoot...Allegra; Marcus Magnus...Mark Earl of Bath. I was so moved with Diana's "death" in Rome I had to stop reading for awhile to compose myself. This is trully a romance novel, the sex scences were very tasteful. My favorite part: when Mark realized that he was once Marcus Magnus.

Summary: Ancient Rome vs. Regency England....Who Knew?
Review: Upon hearing this book was to be a time-travel novel, cheesy images of over-worked, sexually harassed corporate types being wisked to the 16th century English countryside immediately popped into my mind. Who knew that Ms.Henley could skillfully combine the hedonism of Nero's Rome with the hypocrisy of Regency England? Romance novels are usually run of the mill entertainment for lonely women who a) have no one b) the person they have resembles Jabba the Hut or c) they find reality just plain stinks. However, I was pleasantly surprised with Ms.Henley's The Dragon and The Jewel back in freshman year of HS, and she continues to be the only Romance author whose work I spend my hard-earned dollars on. One suggestion, Vikings....Ireland.....women who are over 4'11? Toodles!

Summary: The romance professor
Review: This book puts everything in romance, I can not stop reading it over and over. Virginia Henley is a great author that knows how to keep the reader interested. You should be so lucky to find as much adventure and romance in one novel. This is a must read book, I promise you will not be disapointed after you're done, of course if you are faint at heart STOP! This book is not for you, but if not read on and enjoy.

Summary: Excellent
Review: The best Henley I've read yet - very sexy, very steamy, great ORIGINAL plot (a rarity in romance), and great use of an underused historical backdrop (ancient England after falling to Rome).

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Don't do it!
Review: Truly awful! Melodramatic, contrived situations and dialogue and an annoying heroine. The weak attempt at plot seemed merely an excuse to string together a bunch of sex scenes.
