Rating: Summary: A good beach read... Review: Alright, so Clare Naylor's book won't answer political questions or rid the world of disease, but it's a book to consider if you're just intent on winding down with something easy to read that has some laughs. Keeping up with Liv's antics and her sessions of "dog training" proves to be amusing, but don't think too hard about this book after you've read it--the sugary quality of it will cloy you. Yes, this book is safest when restricted to reading on the beach, or anywhere else that doesn't require much thought.
Rating: Summary: romantic, fun escapism Review: When Liv Eliot goes to Sydney Australia her life changes dramatically. No longer the boring accountant with a broken heart and colorless life she is transformed under the tutelage of her friend Alex - she has her first one night stand, she kisses unsuitable men, she follows her heart back to the love of her life, who happens to be engaged to someone else. And with the ingenious doghandling techniques developed by her friends on her market stall, she changes her destiny. This book is a fun, escapist read, it'll transport you to warm beaches and a cool city and you'll want to live liv's life...and you'll definitely believe that anything is possible.
Rating: Summary: short of the potential to be a good story Review: this was a very muddled and embarrasing story. the book had potential as an interesting story of love after break-up while trying to find one's self in a new dating scene. however, every time "dog handling" was mentioned in a sentence, i winced. the author's attempt to incorporate the theme of "dog handling" was over-shadowing a potentially good story. the later scenes between the main character and her "dog" to be handled was short of a 1980's Sweet Dream turn of events when the ordeal comes to light. the whole story was resolved in an even more over-attempt to tie up the story. so predictable, it was embarrasing.
Rating: Summary: Fun! Review: Fun reading ... of course you know what happens in the end.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and Educational Review: While this book was well written and entertaining, it also was extremely educational. Although the book is fictional, a lot of the information in the book can be useful. If you are someone who is reading the title, or the back of the book and thinking to yourself, "will this book help me train my man?" Yes it will! Not only that, but it was definitely a fun read. I read the whole book in one night! Buy this book, it surely gets my highest recommendation!
Rating: Summary: cute book Review: I found this book a quick and easy read for the summer--but at times it is a bit confusing to follow the writing style. Toward the end, it seemed that the author just wanted to finish it and so it was all just swept along. The characters are fun, and the idea of treating men like dogs with their balls is very entertaining. Other than re reading passages to figure out who was saying what, and to figure out that time had passed without knowing it in the scene, it was a fun summer get away.
Rating: Summary: A good look at the dating scene Review: I could not put this book down. Liv was a character I could relate to, she went threw the same problem with men that I have. If you want a good book to get away from you regular life thewn this is the one to pick.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and cute, with reservations Review: Clare Naylor's DOG HANDLING is a cutesy chick lit about a woman who, when dumped by her fiancé, takes the advice of well-meaning friends and starts to treat an old crush like she would a dog to make him notice her. Problem is, he's already noticed her without the dog tricks, and now she doesn't know if he fell for her for herself, or due to the dog tricks. As I said, it's cutesy. It's also nicely witty and full of self-deprecating humor, but it has all the trademarks of chick lit that I've come to realize annoy me: a heroine with weight/confidence issue, a "plain Jane," surrounded by gorgeous and sophisticated friends -- all the people always seem to be part of a jet-setting, cocktail-quaffing, extremely shallow crowd. Despite the fact that it's a book about finding one's self, it comes off as kind of shallow overall. However, I consider it worthwhile just for the humor, pop culture references, the fun drag queens Dave and James and their explanation of what "dog handling" is. I'd recommend it, yes, but at the same time, it reminds me why I don't read chick lit all the time.
Rating: Summary: Pleasant surprise! Review: Liv, a cute and well adjusted accountant, is engaged to her marketing exec boyfriend of 5 years, Tim, and couldn't be happier about it. Except for all of the fantasies she has of affairs with movie stars and old flames, especially one in particular. And the feeling that she gets every now and then, that something might just be missing. When Tim suddenly breaks off the engagement, Liv flies into a tailspin. She can't figure out where she has gone wrong, and what she will do now that all of her daydreams of domesticity and marrying her 'one true love' have gone up in smoke. Enter her cool manager, who offers to let her go on a with-pay holiday to the location of her choice, in an effort to get her to snap out of the sad state she is in. Liv jets off to Australia where her friend is in the middle of partying with the stars. She is reaquainted with her first boyfriend, and many other amusing characters. Read the book to find out more about her adventures, and how she turns her life around. Very enjoyable - I finished this one in just a couple of days.
Rating: Summary: A good beach or rainy day read Review: Out of last year's (2002) two girl goes to Australia, girl sells lingerie titles (Clare Naylor's "Dog Handling and Leigh Riker's "Strapless"), Clare Naylor is the winner. Liv goes from days of accounting at a hat designer's, spending more time on "Naked Brad" then spreadsheets to the beaches of Australia and helping mold Greta Grundies from a mere market stall brand into a sensation. Light? Yes. Amusing? Yes. Worth the staying in bed until the last minute to get ready for work and not get stuck in traffic? Yes.
