Summary: One of her earlier works
Review: An only child, Brenna strived to be the son her father never had. Instead she is offered as a bride to Garrick, the son of a Viking chieftain. To her horror, her family is betrayed by the chieftain. She is given to his son as his slave, not as his wife. Garrick does not trust women. His betrothed had left him for a fat, wealthy merchant. Owning a firebrand such as Brenna does not make him feel any better about the fairer sex. But Brenna affects him more than any other woman. Could it be he is losing his heart to her?

This book is well written with well developed characters. But these characters are so distrusting of each other that you truly wonder if they really have a chance.

Summary: What a wonderful story!!
Review: At one point, this book had me close to tears. I was sad that Garrick didn't believe her when she came back. Of course he found out the truth, but it took so long! The best part of the book is when Garrick saves his son's life by giving him CPR, and how the midwife thought that he had lost his mind. All in all I just loved this story, it is really one of Lindsey's best.

Summary: A Very Good Read
Review: Brenna was raised as the son her father never had. She could fight with a sword as well as any of the other men and preferred this life to being a female. Unfortunately, as she got older her body betrayed her, turning her into a beautiful woman that she preferred to ignore. When her father arranged a marriage for her with a Viking Chieftain's son, she was enraged. Her father's only purpose was to keep peace between his people and the Vikings who were plundering other lands. Unfortunately, the Viking had no intention of wedding his son to the Celtic people because he had a grudge to settle with them. Instead, Brenna's friends and family are murdered by the attacking Vikings and she is taken captive along with several other women. Instead of going to Garrick Haardrad as his bride, she is given to him as his slave. The proud Brenna lets him and everybody else know she will be slave to no man. This begins the match of wits between a bitter, hate filled Brenna and an equally bitter Garrick who hates women.

The book has elements that I don't like, such as rape. It's hard to have any feelings for the hero when he rapes the heroine, regardless of the time period. It is a sign of Lindsey's writing ability that she did just this without making the reader hate the hero. However, I found myself hating the Viking men and their customs. They treated women very badly and used them as they saw fit. Had Brenna belonged to any of the other men,I'm certain she would have been killed or severely beaten because of her temper and pride. This being a romance book, we see a change in Brenna and Garick's relationship, which is always stormy. I won't ruin the book for you by giving away too much. Suffice to say it was interesting enough to keep me turning pages.

I stayed up until 4 a. m. finishing this book. It's been a long time since I have liked a book well enough to do this. I highly recommend it but only if you can get past the rape scenes.

Summary: Envigorating!
Review: Contrary to most readers' opinions, one of the main reasons that I was intrigued by Fires of Winter is because it conveys a realistic plot. When spinning a tale concerning Vikings and Norseman, Lindsey could not make characters that were all sweet and kind-hearted. This was not the reality then. The actions of Garrick and his family reflect how things actually were back then. You can't expect Lindsey to change history just because it disturbs some of her more fragile readers to hear some violence. As for the content of the story: it was breathtaking. As soon as Brenna lost her stubborn edge and Garrick let himself feel again, I was mesmerized with it. And, my God, are the sex scenes incredible!

Summary: This is not your average love story.
Review: For those that come across this review before you read this book... This is not a light-hearted, {romance in almost every chapter} type of love story. I would say to please keep in mind the time period which this book was based upon. And yes I know that abuse of women is wrong in any era. If you wish not to read things of this nature, then stay away from this book...

The book has been criticized due to the rape scenes. I, however, thought it was an excellent read. I believe that Johanna stayed true to form for that time period. Some of you probably can not hang with this type of reading. I suggest that you try some of her more recent novels. She has not written a novel like this one for quit a while...

Summary: Enjoy
Review: From some of the negative reviews I get the impression that the readers are skipping sections. This is one of Johanna's best, in my opinion. No it's doesn't have laughs in it, but being a tomboy myself when I was younger Brennas attitude makes sense and is believable. Being a Viking so does Garrick's. .... This book takes you to a time in history that only though books will we ever see. And the story fits that time. Also get Hearts Aflame it's just as good.

Summary: I LOVED THIS BOOK!
Review: Garrick and Brenna are one of my all-time favorite couples (and I've read most of Lindsey's stuff). I love the Viking age, and Garrick is such a hottie. Lindsey's newer heroes just can't match him.

Summary: One of Lindsey's best!
Review: Having read nearly all of Ms. Lindsey's work and finding that 9 times out of 10 she does a superb job, I still have to say _Fires of Winter_ remains one of my very favorites. Brenna and Garrick are both very believable characters with an attraction so powerful that it pulls you right in from the first. Yes, sometimes you want to hit Garrick and you might even find yourself yelling at Brenna but that only makes the book all the more enjoyable. The first of a trilogy, _Fires of Winter_ definitely leaves you wanting more. The history, the love, the passion, and the romance make _Fires of Winter_ a classic and worth repeated readings. A must have for any Lindsey fan and anyone wanting to be exposed to Lindsey at her best.

Summary: Not That Great!
Review: I actually read this after reading HEARTS AFLAME. I don't know what I expected since these two were so great in their daughter's story, but I didn't expect constant feuding. When exactly did these two get along? Every day they fought, which would make for a very unhappy life. They didn't seem at all in love, either. Every story needs a little bickering, as long as no one loses sight of the fact that love is still in the air. But when an argument happens almost every time the couple converses, it makes for a very depressing story. I dreaded turning to the next page because I know nothing happy will take place.
There wasn't one romantic love scene in the entire book! No woman, even then, would have put up with being violated over and over again. And I don't believe all men of that era were such pigs, either.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good read
Review: I am not a big fan of Johanna Lindsey but this book is good. The characters are alive and they appeal to me so that's good.
The story is interesting, at times funny.
I recommend it.
She also has another book about Brenna's daughter but I do not remember the name. Please, somebody give me the name and I'll buy it.
Thanks!:)
