Rating: Summary: Great, but not her best! Review: I loved this book, but it lacked the element of passion to me. I agree with the other lady before me, this is the way women of this time were treated, you can't change history! I loved Brenna, but Garrick took awhile for me to come around to. I just thought the plot could've been developed more. But was an excellent read for those who like real history and a look into the life of Vikings, not politically correct 20th century life.
Rating: Summary: ONE Of LINDSEY'S BEST WORKS! Review: I noticed that some readers have a problem with the violent scenes portrayed in this novel. I personally don't think it's up to Johanna Lindsey to portray "politically correct" novels just for the sake of not offending some of her readers. If writers did that then books would be unchallenging. I was wonderfully shocked with this story and very few novels can shock me in today's time. "Fires of Winter" makes you feel emotions for the characters from the start all the way through till the end. The story is compelling and always keeps you interested. The terrible truth is women were really treated this way throughout history. I love Johanna Lindsey for not treating us as one dimensional readers who can only handle story lines if they are shown with "politically correct" characters in a "politacally correct" society. I respect a writer who accurately portrays just how far women have come in the last century. Unlike some other novelist, Johanna shows us the harsh reality of what some of our female anscestors were forced to go through and sadly what some women today are still going through. This novel does a wonderful job keeping the readers wondering what will happen next. The violence may be extreme at times but it does not overshadow the interest of the story. The characters are well developed and thought provoking even if they may not be the greatest role models. This book is a real page turner and if you just "love a Lindsey", then I highly recommend "Fires of Winter"!
Rating: Summary: Viking Love! Review: I REALLY enjoyed this story. I loved the way that they struggled and fought before they finally realized their love. I also liked the way that Brenna wasn't a "helpless little woman" who couldn't take care of herself. Lindsey really pulled off another winner, and I definately recommend this book, as well as the sequels Hearts Aflame and Surrender My Love.
Rating: Summary: The BEST Lindsey's book ever! Review: I thought this is Lindsey's best book yet. Her characters are well developed, and Brenna and Garrick's love for one another soothes away the violence and anger they had for one another. I thought Brenna's love for Garrick was so strong and undescribable. Garrick, while stubborn, on the other hand loves Brenna undeniably. I cried reading this book. Garrick's own stubborn head almost killed Brenna's love. But in the end, their passion melts away any hard feelings.
Rating: Summary: By Loki, I Actually Enjoyed this Dark Romance Review: I'm a sucker for Vikings, I'll admit it, so even though there were aspects about "Fires of Winter" that were questionable, I still found myself glued to the book, unable to put it down. "Fires" is a dark romance about the proud Celtic lady who is captured by Vikings and given as a slave to Garrick the Hardhearted, a merchant with a deep hatred of women. I say "dark" because "Fires" deals with some tough subjects: marauding and raping, slavery, infanticide, and quite a few deaths (human and animal alike). It's almost hard to find the romance buried beneath these intense subjects, but Lindsey does it - and makes you want to read more. Brenna and Garrick are exciting together, with Brenna's iron will clashing against Garrick's cold heart. She absolutely refuses to be his slave. He absolutely refuses to admit he wants, needs, and (eventually) loves her. All they do is fight, fight, fight, but it's fun to watch. There are also other characters in this story who you end up caring for: Perrin and his slave love Janie, kind Erin from the stable, jealous Cordella, brave Dog, and so on.... That said, I have a couple issues with this book. It's easy to tell it's one of Lindsey's earliest novels, for the writing is stiff, the characters lacking Lindsey's famous humor and wit, and some of the dialogue quite cheesy (the first chapter alone is a sad cliché of girl trying hard to be boy). Also, some situations could have used a little more detail, such as Garrick's torture at the hands of the Celts and his sister's death (both are critical to the plot). All in all, however, I enjoyed "Fires of Winter," finding it an engaging read (the details of Viking life alone are fascinating). Better yet, it is the first in Lindsey's Viking series, which also includes "Hearts Aflame" (the best!!!) and "Surrender My Love." Read this book, if not for the story itself, but for the fact that its sequel is amazing, and would be a more enjoyable read by knowing what happens in "Fires of Winter."

Rating: Summary: One of Lindsey's best heroines Review: I, too, thought this was a terrific book. Brenna was strong and captivating, and I believe she and her daughter Kristin (of Hearts Aflame), are two of Johanna Lindsey's best heroines.
Rating: Summary: THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ Review: If I had the ability to give this book a negative rating I would. If you are into RAPE, HUMULIATION, AND BRUTIAL VIOLENCE this book is for you, if not, run for cover if you see this book. I should have known better when the first rape scene showed up on page 5. I didn't get any farther than the first 100 pages when our "Hero" started to rape our heroin as a means of submission. Reading this book left me with a very disturbed feeling and I would hope this review will prevent you from making the same mistake.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful!!!!! Review: It is so great to read about a couple, then months later pick up another book and find yourself reading about their children. Several times Lindsey has surprised me with the same charaters. I find myself feeling like part of the family.
Rating: Summary: Not the best Review: Joanna Lindsey has been one of my favorite authors since I picked up my very first book. Unfortunately, I must say that this is the worst one. I've read every Lindsey book written and this one remains the worst in my opinion. I've read it more than once to give it a fair chance, but it didn't get any better. Not only do the main characters hate each other through 9/10 of the book, but he rapes her many times. The don't seem to even like each other until the very end. This book has too much violence against Brenna. I hope the review helps.
