Summary: A Safe, Fun Approach to Training
Review: I have tried Parelli's methods on my own horses and they work; however, not everyone is physically capable of doing some of the things he mentions, such as mounting or riding bareback. Many horses are not safe to ride bridleless, and it would be foolhardy to try this with them. I feel, though, that any horse will benefit from learning the games, and a horse that can pass the first level test is an all around safer animal. Plus, most of this stuff is just plain fun!

Summary: More practical than Lyons
Review: I like the way Pat organizes his material. I read this and Lyon's on horses book at the same time. I don't remember anything from that book (it was more concept oriented), but I remember and use both concepts and exercises/training techniques from this book 6 mo after reading it.

Summary: Well worth it
Review: I really liked this book alot. I think that Pat Parelli is a wonderful teacher and this is a great way to work with a horse not against it like so many other trainers do. If i had to say a negative, i would say that he promotes that you buy all sorts of tack, etc. I do like the halter (which can be handmade btw) and the lead with popper though. I will definitely buy any other book or video by him.

Summary: Parelli-Safe way 2 start new relationship, info beyond book
Review: I would hope that every one of Pat Parelli's detractors carefully read this book. I'm not a PP groupie but the more I read this book the more I see how his ideas are mangled and maligned by those who are put off by the razz-a-matazz, or jealous of the celebrity or perhaps have seen a bad example of his pupils.

This book is an introduction. It tries to cover all the principles of Natural Horsemanship (PP style), introduce the Parelli philosophy, give you a couple of exercises to start out with, talk about the gear and discuss PP's life and experiences. Covering such a wide range of topics, it is easy to complain that it covers none in depth - but it was never intended to.

What I particularly like about the book is that, if you are willing to read it (perhaps several times), in its entireity you get a much better picture of what Pat Parelli is really all about. Here is a man with an understanding of the horse as a complex being in its own right - not a big dog or a cow or a surrogate baby or a tractor. He explains equine motivation, and needs and how understanding and working within those boundaries will make your relationship with your horse much more satisfying (for both of you).

Summary: Warning: This Book Will Change Your Life Forever.
Review: I'm a believer. I tried the others, then found the truth in Pat Parelli's teachings. If you don't know anything about Parelli Natural Horse-Man-Ship, this book is a good start. His whole home study program and the tools that go with it can be purchased online. Once you get into Parelli, there is no turning back. We came to him because of a horse that adamantly refused to get into a horse trailer. Now the whole family has learned to savvy our horses in ways we never thought possible. This book will explain how humans behave like predators around horses, driving a wedge in their relationship. More importantly, he explains how to overcome that tendency and how to teach yourself new ways of communicating with your horse as a loving partner and leader. Giving you specific techniques and exercises to use, Pat sets you up for success with your horse, no matter how difficult he may be now. I have now seen dozens of people get incredible results from their horses by changing their approach and adopting Pat's methods. My own former spookaholic Arabian now trots after me at liberty and I ride him bridleless - with nothing on his head. This didn't happen overnight - in fact it took a year of dedicated focus, but the results are, frankly, amazing. Try the book, then the program, but be warned: you cannot return to normalcy. And by the way, the horse that wouldn't load now trots happily onto the trailer when we point to it. No kidding.

Summary: A must-read for anyone who cares about their equine partner!
Review: Learn to communicate with your horse in the most natural and safe method possible by one who is gifted enough to teach all of us "predator-humans." You won't regret spending the time reading what Parelli has to say. Be prepared to have your whole way of doing things with your horse turned up-side-down. You'll run out of daylight before you run out of things to do playing with your partner. Have fun and enjoy the experience naturally!

Summary: About 50 pages of excellent Theory with 160 pages of filler
Review: Parelli has important concepts to share but I found the book very repetitive and lacking in some details. He has 3 chapters discussing his training tools but fails to describe how to make and adjust the hand tied halter he thinks is a "must have" piece of equipment for his style of training. I found my self hunting for the chapters where he gave actual training advice instead of advertizing hype for his methods, books, videos and clinics. He has a horrid fixation on making everything into numbered list and cutsy alliteration. If I read the phrase"the six yeilds(forward, backward, right, left, up and down)" one more time I will gag. Overall I do think it is worth the Amazon price.
