Rating: Summary: Amterdam: I used all the books and Get Lost! was the best. Review: I just got back last month from a fantastic trip to Amsterdam. Joe Pauker's book, "The Cool Guide to Amsterdam", was the key to my trip. Before I left, my family and friends gave me several guides to the city. I took them all with me, but I ended up using only Get Lost! Not only was the information the most interesting and up to date, but I found it hillarious reading as well. I've travelled all around the world, used the various other "alternative" guidebooks and I have never found a book that covered so many cool and funky places in a city. Admitedly, Amsterdam is a city filled with beautiful architecture, great music, excellent coffee shops and unique squat restaurants, but Pauker's "Cool Guide to Amsterdam" showed me where they all were.
Rating: Summary: A Pagan from Seattle Review: I purchased this book based on the review of "Patrick Burwell, a Christian from Glasser, NJ". Thanks for your recommendation!
Rating: Summary: Better Books can be found Review: I spent 4 days in Amsterdam and found this little book to be great, BUT I wish that I would have had a more "mainstream" guidebook as well. This is meant to be a supplement, focusing on cheap eats, "coffee shops," smart shops, sex, etc. The map in it [stinks]!! But the information that IS there is good, accurate information. But it won't tell you how to use the tram system, or where every restaurant is, or more basic information such as the history of the city. Again, for what it is, it's great. For what it's not, it's not.
Rating: Summary: Good, but bring another book! Review: I spent 4 days in Amsterdam and found this little book to be great, BUT I wish that I would have had a more "mainstream" guidebook as well. Rating: Summary: You have to get this one! Review: I started buying tour books about 4 months before my 30 day trip to Europe. Me and my sister started in Amsterdam. Out of all the books I bought this was the most useful, most read, the easiest to follow, and the most amusing. I constantly referred back to it during our time in Amsterdam. You won't be sorry you got it.
Rating: Summary: Fun reading material, get's you excited before you arrive Review: I was handy, full of fun info. The maps pretty much were worthless, buy a good map when you get there. The reveiws were good and the hints to the "right" shops were right on. I recommend the cybercafe, get online and out-off-it all in one place. The guide to what type of music to expect in the coffee shops really helped. It does make a difference, if you know what I mean. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: I was very scared by those negative comments below, but I trusted a friendly website which claims it as the best Amsterdam's guide.
And IT IS! I spent three weeks in Amsterdam and the Cool Guide to Amsterdam was my best friend over there.
And about so much money, you know what, in Amsterdam $10 is like nothing, this book saved me hundreds of euros!
Take the directions of this book and you will have an unforgetable vacation, guaranteed!
Cheers!!
Rating: Summary: I'm a convert - a great book to take on your trip! Review: I wrote a previous review after I received Get Lost! Amsterdam but before I made my trip. At the time, I liked the book but felt it was overpriced. I just returned from 10 days in Amsterdam, and I'd like to change my review. This book was great!! Assuming, of course, that you're going to Amsterdam for Smart Shops, and a great scene. If you're not interested in drugs or the cheapest places to stay, this book isn't for you. The information was very useful; I repeatedly referred to the lodging, drug and general info sections. My only criticism is there could be more listings for restaurants - but then, this probably isn't the only guide you're going to bring with you. A very useful guide for anyone looking for a great trip . . .
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT Alternative Guide to Amsterdam Review: If you're going to Amsterdam on a pilgrimage, as many of us do, this book won't miss the mark. It REALLY is worth it to scout out the more interesting coffeeshops listed in this book, especially the ones that have won awards: They won for a reason. Also, the hotel section allows you to almost show up on the fly and find a decent place for a good price. Joe Paulker says what he thinks, not what he might be paid to think as in other guidebooks. Good map included. He also mentions the art scene with good accuracy, with various museums and sights to see in the area. One note: If you don't have the 2001 edition (8th edition), which will be released in June 2001, I think, but instead have the 1999 7th edition, check the book's web page for a couple updates and some errata.
