Rating: Summary: Great guide to "alternative" Amsterdam Review: If you're interested in the smoking side of visiting Amsterdam, this is the best book I have seen. While this is certainly not the only guide you should read before your trip, it is a damn good one. It's advice on the best coffee shops was mostly right on the mark, and the best deals and highest quality were had at his recommended shops. In summary... if you're a toker, pick up this joker! :-)
Rating: Summary: Stoner Friendly Review: Lets face it. If your going to Amsterdam, your going to go for the unique experiences Amsterdam has to offer. I brought four guide books with me; 'Get Lost!', 'Let's Go Map Guide', 'Amsterdam Rough Guide', and 'Frommer's Irreverent guide'. We carried them all until we realized that understanding any of them except the Get Lost! guide was close to impossible. It is simple, has large text, comes with a map, and lists pretty much everything that we did. Very stoner friendly. We planned each day before we left the hotel room using all the guides we brought and then just brought the Get Lost! guide with us. We were there for eight days and the Get Lost guide doesn't have enough to do in it for that long of a trip so you should probably pick up one of the other guides to supplement your trip if you plan to stay longer than 4 or 5 days. On the downside, it could use more restaurant suggestions, a more detailed map of the center of town, and a brief update. The Torture Museum is closed and some of the hours are a bit off on the businesses. Tip: Some of the best weed we found were the joints they sold in Homegrown Fantasy on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 87a. Fear the shrooms you can buy in Amsterdam and plan to remain in your hotel room for about 6 hours completely useless if you do choose that trip. Do not participate in traffic!
Rating: Summary: Great money and time saving tips! Review: My wife and I loved this book! He leads one to the best coffee shops and best cheap eats in town. Check out the pancake house upstairs!!!
Rating: Summary: Joe Pauker: The Wrong Guide for Amsterdam Review: The author used foul language and obscene remarks at every opportunity. His book was not "good reporting" but was constantly swayed by his opinion. At one point he refuses to give you an address of a place rooms for men and women, curfews, sing-alongs in the lounge, and a clean-cut staff that's looking for converts should be enough to persuade you to spend a little more time elsewhere. You'll have to find the addresses yourself." The whole point of a Youth Hostel is to give them a safe, clean and inexpensive place to stay, which Eben Hauzer and The his book, I expected to see indecent individuals on every corner and drug pushing pickpockets following me everywhere I went, while I tried to find any place without sexual content. My wife and I went to Amsterdam December 1998, and Mr. Pauker was very wrong in his perspective. There were some locations to look out for, but they are obvious and easily avoided. We bought three books on Amsterdam, and the other two had listed all the Museums and sites without unnecessary comment. I strongly recommend you avoid all books by this author, Joe Pauker, as well as any by the publisher "Get Lost Publishing". Patrick Burwell Christian New Jersey, US
Rating: Summary: An awsome guide to stoner heaven Review: This book is great.! I highly recomend it to anyone who is visiting Amsterdam for the first time. It is very imformative, and explains transportation, money exchange, do's and dont's for travelers and had a complete list and locations of the coolest sites and places to go in Amsterdam. It has info on attractions but focuses more on the "High society" if you catch my drift ! This book is a must buy, i found my hotel and other things to do in this book.
Rating: Summary: THE SOURCE for "Alternative" Amsterdam Review: This book is undoubtedly THE SOURCE for the thrift minded and Cheech & Chong friendly crowd. You will immediately confirm this when you visit one of the recommended "alternative" coffee shops and see this book propped up on display behind the bar. I would suggest this book as a supplement to a Fodors or Eyewitness type of guide. I have visited Amsterdam a number of times with friends who live there, and have become very familiar with the sites and personality of the city. I wouldn't miss the Rated-G attractions that are glossed over or left out of this book. But within this book are some gems - like the cheap virgin cola at the virgin megastore.

Rating: Summary: Invaluable Travel Guide Review: This book is without a doubt the best, hippest, most authoratative travel book I have ever seen. Joe Pauker knows Amsterdam inside and out, and it shows. He hones in on the coolest aspects of one of the world's coolest cities with the eye of someone who truly loves and knows the city. Anyone considering a trip to Amsterdam should consider this book to be the one indispensible item on their 'must-have' list.
Rating: Summary: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY Review: This book of the Amsterdam "UNDERGROUND" is a "inexpensive" and junky guide that will only waste your money. I was able to find much better information on the COOL SPOTS and GOOD Coffee Shops surfing the net in only 1 hour. THIS GUIDE IS ... USELESS ...
Rating: Summary: Don't go without this book! Review: This book was incredibly helpful. I just got back from a week in Amsterdam, and "Get Lost" was my constant companion - helped me find places to eat, smoke, get cash - everything. I love this book!
