The campaign modes are actually fun to play! Whats up with that? The game is real easy to pick up and the many different difficulty settings alows you to get better slowly not get frustrated and bite you mouse in half.

Summary: A very good game
Review: Age of Empires is a very, very good game. There are realistic settings, and you can even play a historical event, with your own civilizations. You don't have to have to participate in wars, though. You can create your own maps, and set your villagers to work! There is also a very nice 5-part tutorial, which teaches you how to do almost evrything in the game. But, some things you have to learn on your own. The tutorial helped me a lot when I first bought the game. When you start a civilization, you can choose the culture of your people(EX: Turks, Japanese, Goths...) and your team color, which is what color the clothes of your people are. As your civilization build, you can upgrade to different ages, which will allow you better technology. You can also upgrade things in the buildings, from things as important as making your soldiers stronger, to things as simple as making monks and villagers walk faster. I can't wait to buy the expansion pack/new game, Age of Empires: Age of Mythology.

Summary: don't be fooled!!!
Review: yes I gave it one star. You probably want to know WHY I gave it one star. Their are many reasons:
1. useless game modes. Their is one game mode where all you have to do is surrvive for half an hour and then you win. How pointless!!!!
2. In most RTS games each side is very different from the other and therefore has differnt tactics. In AOE 2 this is not true. I mean the sides are almost identical. Microsoft tried to impress us by claiming "13 UNIQUE sides."
3. lack of unit variety

4. graphis- the terrain looks terrible (cliffs trees ground and water.)
5. units-the physics in this "RTS" is terrible. I mean a catapult moves on its own as if it is powered by a gass engine. Yeah right. Some of the units are just about the same darn thing (turtle ship and elite turtle ship)
6.resources-it is practicaly impossible to maintain a steady flow of money in this game.
7.campaign- it is really boring. Some of the names sound so stupid (william wallace learning campaign)ThE ONLY WAY TO WIN IN gameis to send lots of units at your enemy.
8. more gameplay-terrain has absolutely no effect on the battles. Building an impressive strong civiliATION CAN TAKE HOURS. The ai for the enemy is horrible. With the exception of trees the terrain is not deformable. Units and gameplay is horrible balanced. Also no air units. Low unit limit (200.) When your little soldiers hit buildings with their swords the building goes on fire. Why is that? Don't expect a challenge in the skirmish games. None of this has to do with my system. I have a 1.3 gigahertz processor with a 32 megabyte video card. The battles, even the larger ones, look pathetic. Terrible lighting effects and no weather. Their is no in-game music. Too much micro anaging in everything. In terms of game play this game looked like it was rushed. Microsoft just does not make good RTS's

I think there's more that I could list but I'v said enough. Lots of other people say that this game is stunning or tthe best. This game isn't as bad as starcraft but it is still really bad and is really boring. What game should you buy? Try C&C Renegade or Dark Reign 2. In Dark Reign 2 u can see tracks made by vehicles no such thingg like this in AOE 2.

Summary: Microsoft does it again!!!
Review: Microsoft strikes back creating a game far better than the original Age of Empires. With all new commands including navy and military formations. All new civilizations, more upgrades, and seperate and unique upgrades and units for each civilization. A must buy for any strategy game lover.

Summary: Great game, but AOM is even better!
Review: I'm revising my original review where I originally gave this game 3 stars. After reading more about strategy and tactics I discovered that this game is much more fun than I gave it credit for. I realized that my own shortcomings were to blame and not the game. An excellent and fun addictive game that I recommend. This was my original review:

I only gave this 3 stars because it turns out I don't like real-time games as much as turn-based games. If you're like me and you don't like real-time games where everything moves super fast and you don't really have too much time to plan things out, then you won't like this that much, because you need to be quick on your feet! But if you like that kind of thing, then you'll love this. Hope this helps. If you prefer turn-based, try Civilization III (have a fast computer!) or my personal favorite Call to Power II (some people don't like this one as much, but I love it!)

Summary: Sweet! AWESOME! ROCKS!
Review: My name is Robert Davis and I got this game from a freind
who did'nt want it, so he gave it to me. This game ROCKS!
The graphices are great and the games you can play are AWESOME!
My favroit are the Death Matchs. I like having allies when I
play because it's fun to see Trade Carts going back and forth
between your and your allies Markets. The instruction booklet
is really detailed so if your in a jam just pause the game
and bring it out. The fighting is good because the good graphices( they don't just go up to each other and just stand
there, you see them swinging their swords!) This game I
highly recommend to any fan of Lord of the Rings the movie.
They have a lot in common. GET THIS GAME AS SOON AS YOU SEE
THIS REPORT, IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Summary: A CLASSIC
Review: This game is fantastic, detailed enough to command individual people/knights etc, broad enough to keep an eye on your civilisation as a whole. Admitedly good things do come to an end, and i did eventually get a bit bored with it(after a good coupla years fun though). However the thing that amazes me is the number of reviews saying that it is too hard. I got tired of this because it was too easy and you only had to do the same thing everytime to win. ie - Dont bother building units at all to begin with (if enemies attack just garrison villagers in the town centre and shoot the invaders). As soon as you get to the second age, enclose your town with stone walls, followed by castles and watch towers. only when you have done this, and got lots of money etc do you start building an army. The slightly demented AI means the computer players rarely launch large scale attacks, and you can send knights out to defeat porely defended siege weapons. Then simply amass your troops and annihilate.
Wow, when put like that 4 stars sounds a bit high, but this does remain an enjoyable game

Summary: Adictting
Review: Age of empires 2: the age of kings is all about building a small town and defending it against the computer or a friend if you play it online. You create the army that'll protect your village, and you can send the army to go fight the enemy. All in all a fun and adictting game.

Summary: A rush to play....
Review: If you love history, and you love strategy, and you love it happening all in real-time, you'll certainly enjoy this time-sucker. And I DO MEAN time sucker! Especially when you and your opponent(s) can resource and defend their economy well, even after several waves of attacks. Talk about dancing!

My only complaint on the game and genre, as a whole, is that it soon becomes a game of "whoever can level up the quickest and get to the next Age" usually wins. In this instance, I suddenly long for turn based games like Advanced Wars, or even Chess, where time is allowed for thought-out, planned-out strategy. But this is just personal preference, and should be taken as such. (Maybe I SHOULD enjoy those turned-based games more often before playing this to counter-balance my likings and dislikings...hmmm.)

The bottom line advice- buy this game as an educational device as well as for something that will be truly enjoyed by the real-time strategy fan. And I recommend buying the "Age of Empires II: Gold Edition" where you get the game and its expansion pack for nineteen dollars and ninety-five cents. Don't just get Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. You'd be cheating yourself out of bug fixes and game balance tweaks, as well as new civiliations and other small but truly worthwhile goodies.

Summary: BEST PC GAME ALONG WITH THE SIMS!
Review: Age Of Empires II is the best game. Almost as good as the Sims, this game will sometime be at the top of the list of the bestsellers. Create an entire civilization with Military, villagers and Monks. Go from Militia to Champions. Build Military buildings like Watch Towers, Castles, Archery Ranges, Stone Walls, Palisade Walls and more. Also create sea docks where you can build Fishing Ships, Transport Ships, and all kinds of War Ships. There are also four types of games--Campaignes, Regicides, Learn-To-Play, and Deathmatch. Put your villagers to work by chopping trees for wood, hunting sheep, deer and wild boar for food, mining gold for gold, and mining stone for stone. Travel from the Dark Age to the Imperial Age--with all kinds of special technology. GET IT!
