Summary: Why does this game get suchh a good review
Review: I don't hyave this game. Then how could I write a review for it? Because my younger has this game and he plays it quite a lot. The pros? buildings look pretty good and ummmmmm oh yah there are a lot of units. The cons? Big one. It seems that that this game was a rushed attempt by microsoft. The game seems to be lacking so many things. Also resource gathering tkes a realy long time. This is a really bad thing since the only way to win in this game is to throw lots of units at your enemy. You harvest 4 recources. It takes a REALLY LONG TIME to get enough of any of the 4 recources. Also it seems like you have to constantly have to replant your farms. The game involves little or no strategy. This might have something to do with fact that all the 13 races are almost identical. Each race has the same buildings, technologies to research, units, and tactics. Upgrading gets repetitive and boring. The graphics for the terrain are terrible. There is a unit limit wich is annoyingly low. Also age of empires has some of the most boring batles in any RTS game. You spend more time on getting resources than attacking. The sound effects are horrible and the game has NO music. Also there are no air units. Except for trees the terrain is not deformable. It comes with tons of useless game modes. If I couold give it -2 stars I would have. This is a game for little kids. There is so much micromaneging in everything. The naval units are pathetic.
In conclusion every element of gameplay you can imagine sound, graphics amount of strategy etc. is terrible. This is a rushed atempt by microsoft to compete with the best games such as dark Reign and Red Alert 2. I think that this is a disgrace to strategy games. This is the most BORING AND PATHETIC STRATEGY GAME I have ever played.

Summary: Magnificent, beautiful!!
Review: This game is MAGNIFICENT. The games pro outweight the con soooo much that I want to give it a hundred stars. I also recommand this with its expansion: The conquerers, because in solve many problems, such as micromanaging villagers.

PRO:

Tatic: There are a lot of tatic involve in AoK(ex: rushing, booming, castle rush) and you also require to plan and capture important location such as chokepoint and gold mine(nearly all strong units require gold). You also need to know each units strength and weakness(knight is weak against pikeman and camel, but strong against infantry, seige unit, other weaker calvery, archers). Sending your entire army loose in enemy base usually is unwise if your opponent is very skilled and know your weakness. Also, in early stages, EVERY seconds counts. If you are delayed even by one minutes, the consequences may be terrible.

A.I. : Computer's A.I. can be very har, but it can also be very easy. If you are on the easy level, your computer opponent will rarely attack(or not attack at all) and will not research any tech.

If you are on the standards level, computer will attack late in the game when you usually have enough units to crush the attack.(the attack usually consis of some cheap infantry/calvery with one or two seige unit.)computer only research important tech, such as chemistry.

On moderate level, the computer no longer letting you slap their faces(or screen). They advance through the ages rapidly(ten minutes adverage, I once see a chinese advance in seven minutes). They normally launch attack during about 16th minutes, which consist of many knights, infantry, archers, and seige units(early is rams, and later is cannons and trebuchets). They also build mass navy and shore bombard your town/city if you are not prepared. The computer also research many tech, such as armors and attack points.
I won't explain more because I hope you got the idea. Personally I can beat 5 computer opponents in standards, 2 in moderate, and (rarely)1 in hard(without cheat)

Senario: you also can be Joan of Art, Saladin, and more historic figure and help them accomplish many things.

ART: The art in AoK is stunning, and the building size is also reasonable. The unit animation is believable(especially trebuchets)
I could add a lot more than those things list above

CON:

Micromanagement- You need to tell your villagers to replant farms, chop trees, mine golds after the mining camp is complete. Most of those things was solve in the conquerer expansion(there are farm quenes, smarter villagers, and more)

Are you a strategy gamer? Do you like Star Craft/War Craft? If you are looking for a new game to get adictive, PUT THIS IN YOUR SHOPPING CART RIGHT NOW!!

P.S. : like starcraft, there are also multiplayer settings.

Summary: Loads of Fun until...
Review: I saw the gold edition of this game at a store, and bought it because I'd heared how much fun it was. And fun it certainly was!

You start with a few villagers and a town center, and work your way thru 4 different ages, each one has more options than the previous one, and you (hopefully) become the ruler of a powerful civalization. You can be one of many different civalizations, including the Turks, Goths, Vikings, Celts, and, (in the expansion) the Mayans, Aztects, Huns-you get the idea. Each one is unique- they each have a different unique unit, and some can't research certain technologies that the others can.

The gameplay is good- you make your villagers build buildings, forage for food, mine for stone & gold, etc. Then you can create military units from different buildings - barracks, archery range, stable, siege workshop, and unique units at the castle. This game is also relatively easy to learn!

This game gets boring only after you get good at it, and then it seems to be the same sort of thing over and over again--the computer players always play the same way, etc.

But don't get me wrong, this is a great game - I would have given it 4 & 1/2 stars if I'd had the option.

Summary: Excellent Strategy Game, being out dated however
Review: .
I am really into strategy games and this is one of my favorites. The controls are, in my opinion, very intuitive but it helps to have the previous version of this however. Game play is solid the AI level are well set well for expert and novice alike, the online games are fairly good if you have a fast connection. My experience with this game has been and with the updates from Microsoft it has been relatively bug free with very few system crashing glitches. The graphics were and still are good but getting a bit old, if you buy new games ever year you will be able to tell the difference between the new and the old. I however have to suggest you wait and get the new AOM (Age of Mythology) instead of AOE. And if you can't wait then I suggest you get the expansion pack Microsoft made for it.

Summary: Age of Empires: The 13 and a Half MInute Age of "Kings"
Review: An extremely addictive game with lots of customization settings and an interesting way to take the RTS format and do something different with it.

Then why did I give it only One star?

Because Microsoft forgot you can only go so far when it comes to false advertising.

The game claims to span over a thousand years, when really all it is is a Warcraft rip-off with history instead of fantasy. In trying to combine these two elements together, (history and fantasy/RTS) Microsoft has created an abomination of a game likely to dissapoint real-life historians everywhere. Instead of a 1000 years, it spans over twelve minutes with the click of a button bringing you up 250 years. What kind of history simulation is that?!
Also, there's nothing less realistic than seeing a single peasant building the Great Wall of China in about 10 minutes. This is because of all those Warcraft elements of "Real-Time Fantasy". If I want an RTS game, I'll go play Warcraft because at least that has Orcs, instead of 13 different races which look exactly alike (except for the buildings).
So the way I see it, if you want an RTS game, go buy Warcraft. If you want a simulation game, go buy Civilization. If you want both, do not buy Age of Empires because it destroys and embarrasses the simulation aspect, and all you're left with is a complex foolishly made RTS.

Summary: Yes, AOE2 does deliver your need for strategy games, but....
Review: Start with villagers, some resources, a town center and build up you little outpost into a great center of trade, diplomacy, and a place where enemies, who want what you have, are going to destroy you! this is what Age of Empires 2 is all about. you start from scratch, with just some mere villagers. you gather up resources to build an army to conqueror and defend. its really like all real-time strategy games. however, unlike some of its counter-parts (ahem... cough starcraft warcraft cough) it has a lot of the same buildings and lots of the same core units. in warcraft and starcraft, every race has different resources gatherers whereas in Age of empires2, you always have the same villager. in AOE2, the only differences between races would be unique units, and unit/tech trees. each race has their own econonic boosts and disadvantages. the unit/tech tree that i am talking about is that each race can make a certain unit and research a certain technology that another race cannot. for example: the chinese can build bombard towers, but the celts cannot. the chinese can build Camels, while the celts cannot. however, celts can research much stronger infantry technology, including weapons and armor advancements, while the chinese cannot. overall, you will have lots of fun playing this game no matter if you have played both starcraft and warcraft previously.

Summary: a classic
Review: This is my favorite game of all time. It's been 2 whole years playing this game and I haven't gotten tired of it, honestly. The campains are awesome, challenging, and real(except the one of Erik the Red in "The Conquers" expansion where it sayes he discovered North America, his son Leif Erikson did that). You've probably heard all the mombo jumbo about the civs and campains, so I won't get into that.
So anyway, the bottom line is that I would buy this game right now, explore what it has to offer, spend time on this until you finnally get bored (which could be until you die), THEN buy the expansion, it adds so much great stuff.Oh, by the way if your not sure what to get "Empire Earth" or this, get this, although EE has more units and ages I say QUILITY OVER QUINITY(i hope thats how you spell it).Meaning AGE OF EMPIRES is better.

Summary: Many copycats, no comparison
Review: I played all kinds of RTS, Sim and RPG games.
Many of them are great, but AOE2 is the Godfather of them all.
Many games tried to copy it. Sorry, it still has its unique feel and gameplay, still is the gold standard.
Microsoft didn't do wrong with this game, and they did wrong with every other game they tried!
Beautiful graphics, smooth and easy controls, and awesome gameplay.
I don't want to go over each technical aspect of the game, I just wanted to give this game its deserved dues!
A five stars for the ages.
