Summary: Good features with some compromises
Review: The main reason that I bought this player was its ability to play all of my dvds in different formats. I have purchased numerous different sets of Seinfeld, Sokko, Ultraman and others on ebay and none of the other units tested would play them all. I purchased a philips dvd+r recorder and this unit plays dvds made on this unit most of the time. At times it will not get to different episodes (titles) on a dvd created by the philips. When brand new, it would play anything. It is only 3 months old now without daily use. The customer service in CA would not offer to exchange, nor could the explain why it used to read every title and now does not. For commercial dvds it plays perfect. The speakers sound small. It has a good size screen, but can be hard to watch if not straight on. I would suspect others will be real happy with the performance of just commercial release dvds.

Summary: Works for me..
Review: This player, without the battery, is amazingly small and light. With the battery it's still pretty small and light. Battery life is decent. The door that provides access to the DVD is flimsy and the latch that keeps the clamshell closed is made of plastic instead of metal. I suspect both will break within five years. Those are my only gripes.

For the price, this player has impressive capabilities including progressive scan. The sound (without speakers) and picture quality are both decent although for $200 more you can get better. The number of good-quality cables, including car power adaptor, is also impressive.

I bought this device for a car road trip with a 2 year old. It didn't skip during the ride. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I also bought the MITOCORP Suspension Theater as a carrier/holder in the car. Both are a good fit.

Summary: unreliable
Review: I bought this DVD player less than a month ago in anticipation of a long road trip and was very dissapointed to find that on the second movie I tried playing it wouldn't work. The first time it worked fine but when I took it back out a few weeks later it wouldn't read the disc and once it did it kept getting stuck and skipping. Luckily this happened before we went on the road. This one will go back and I am staying away from this brand.

Summary: Amazing dvd player
Review: This is one of the most awesome gifts i ever got. I like this better than the computer. This portable dvd player has a great design, an amazing crisp clear picture with perfect lighting and good sound when you do not use the ear phones but with the ear phones sounds amazing. You can take this anywhere you want, in the car, the airplane or just at home. You can lay in bed with it and watch movies with the ear phones in and ive never seen such a great picture before on a screen. It works for a long time when you use it without the cords and use the lithium battery and it is very sleek and thin and great detail. I sit in bed i plug it in the wall and i watch movies. Then when i want to take it out i use the battery and i can watch movies without cord. It also has many more cool features like mp3 and you can store diffrent things in it and you can hook it up to a tv. Mine came with its own black carrying case and it has a remote - it is the coolest thing ever and i am very picky when it comes to this stuff and trust me you or your kids will love this- it is great gift for anyone. I dont see how anyone can give this a negative review , this product is superb. This is one of if not the coolest thing i have ever gotten and i have many cool gadgets so i recomend this. HIGHLY recomended.

Summary: Pretty good portable DVD
Review: I have bought another portable DVD player about a year ago and was unhappy with my purchase. I had problems playing DVD's for long period of time. It would skip a lot and would sometimes stop in a middle of a movie. I recently bought this CH-LDV 712 and found it pretty good so far. I like the 7" screen and it's sleek design. I mostly need it to play PAL DVD's and it does. Many home DVD players do not play PAL DVD's. Also want to be able to take it where ever I go. It is definitely small and light enough to do so. I also bought the matching case with it. It works quite well. So far I would recommend it anybody. I bought mine at Fry's for $249.99 brand new. Cheaper than Amazon. For that price, you really can't go wrong.

Summary: A Lemon of a DVD player
Review: I recieved my Cyberhome DVD player as a gift from my parent for Christmas. We did not own a DVD up until that time, and i was very excited about it. My parents also gave me Shrek. AS soon as i had figured out what to do, i put the dvd in, expecting to see a movie. But, it said loading like it wa supposed to, but then in said that there was an error on the DVD. Later, at my uncles house, i tried MIB II, and it worked perfectly, as well as Princess Diaries, but Finding Nemo would not work. I was fed up with the thing, so we sent it back and I recieved a Mintek DVD player that works like a dream.

Summary: Good product for the price
Review: I was looking for a portable DVD with a 7 inch screen, and after much research decided on the CyberHome.

The pros:
Listening with the ear buds you hear fantastic sound and see an awesome picture. It has really nice features like showing your pictures in a slideshow. Decent battery life.

The cons:
While watching the movie "Heat" with Al Pacino and Robert Deniro on a recent flight to San Diego, I found myself constantly turning up the volume to compensate for spoken dialog versus turning down the volume for when things in the movie started "heating" up scenes with shattering glass, trains, etc. The subtitle feature can fix this problem too. Actually, this is no different than any other TV volume problem with commercials being twice as loud as the programs. Just with ear buds it's a little more difficult to deal with. Also, you cannot listen/watch a film without the ear buds because the speaker sound is too quiet and sounds horrible.

I also burned .jpeg pictures from a recent trip to England so I could bring it to work or show family right on the DVD player. Approximately 10% of the pictures would not display correctly. Sometimes it would show just a black screen with a thin white line, or it would show a portion of 2-3 pictures in a collage haphazardly together.

The ear buds hurt after a while.

All in all, a decent product for a decent price.

Summary: Cyberhome 712 and 700B compared
Review: BECAUSE THERE IS AN "EDIT" BUTTON, I HAVE TRIED TO "EDIT" THIS AND MAKE A FEW CORRECTIONS -- BUT EVEN THOUGH I "SAVE" MY NEW EDITS, THEY NEVER SHOW UP!

WHY IS THAT?

I know a few things to compare the Cyberhome CH-LDV 712 with another model, the Cyberhome CH-LDV 700B. This info may be useful to some. (I would have put this alongside the CH-LDV 700B reviews, but Amazon has no provision for it, and I don't think it's right for Amazon to print only those 3 negative reviews just because "Amazon" doesn't sell the 700B any more.)

As I said, I had a chance to compare the 712 and the 700B. Here are a few of the differences, besides the $50 to $100 difference in price:

a) The 712 is better at playing MP3s. On a disk of 120 MP3s a friend burned for me, only 21 would play when using the 700B. With the 712, all 120 showed up, although I didn't have the time to play them all -- I assume they played fine, like the few I did try. Because the 712 takes longer to load a CD disk full of MP3s, I suspect that it has more RAM memory than the 700B.

b) The 712 definitely has a longer-lasting battery. Or should, anyway. Some reviews claim it does not last 4 hrs on a charge. I wonder if they charged it long enough. The 700B's battery DEFINITELY lasts 2.5 hours on a full charge, but it can be diminished somewhat by skipping around a lot on the DVD's menus, playing at high speed, etc etc. It does not get overly hot, just warm. If the temperature is over 80 degrees it will get very warm after a while, but never hot.

c) The 712's screen is hard for me to get used to... it is full of lenticular lines that prevent the picture from looking its sharpest. The 700B has lines, but they barely show at most angles, and I love the picture's sharpness. Because of this, I rate the 700B much higher in this respect.

d) I wasn't able to check the 712's screen, but the 700B's screen has a problem with spotting. Maybe all DVD screens do, I don't know. If you happen to flick a tiny spot of water or coffee on it, there will be a stain you cannot remove. Trying to do so will only make it worse. It's as if the 700B has an "emulsion" for a screen -- which may explain why it comes with a piece of clear plastic covering the screen. Do not remove this, unless you want problems with the screen getting dirty. Remember, you cannot clean it.

e) I have little experience with DVD players in general, so maybe this is a common problem -- but I found that I could not "quickly" get into a movie with the 700B. Always had to wait thru the FBI warnings and a few other images first. Took about 60 seconds or more usually, and grew quite annoying. I now hate the FBI.

f) The 712 definitely has a battery that "should" last 4 hours, as claimed, and I was unable to check on that -- HOWEVER, there is a trade-off. The battery adds almost a pound or more to the 712's weight. One advantage, though, is that you can charge the battery WITHOUT having the DVD player along, something the 700 cannot do.

g) I heard that some people returned their 700B because the screen went black and didn't return -- well, in my experience the reason for that was from STARTING THE CAR while running the 700B on the car's battery. Starting creates a surge which will cause the screen to go black, and you'll have to re-boot afterward by waiting a minute and then starting all over. Maybe they all do this, who knows? But it plays just fine once the car is running.

h) PLAYING JPG's. The 700B (and the 712) are both supposed to be capable of playing jpeg images, but I found that the 700B could only play a limited few files... perhaps 25 or 30 images. I discovered that the 712 could access more, but I wasn't able to discern that their quality was any better. The images were not of the best quality with either one, in my opinion -- and if they were small, you had to work with the "zoom" on the remote to make them bigger, and you usually had to re-frame them. A lot of bother. But then, it's only a 7" screen.

For the $200 I paid, the 700B suits me just fine -- although I'm not too happy with its JPG and MP3 limitations and may decide to return it. But the movies are just excellent, with brightly colored images (which you can brighten or darken) and a really high-quality stereo sound, especially with good headphones. The tiny built-in speakers are barely adequate, and can scarcely be heard with some passages.

Summary: Fully tested ..IT DELIVERS
Review: I read pretty much every single review on portable DVD's available and I chose the Cyberhome portable DVD deal from Walmart. True its not the 712 model (battery last 2,5 hours Vs 4 hours on the 712), but it comes with the portable case to carry and mount in a car and all accesories for $198 (on special) or regularly at $218. I did convert it to multizone in seconds (as described by another reviewer here). It now plays pretty much anything in CD size format you can imagine. I have tested all types of re-recordable DVD's MP3 and on different environments planes, cars on old TV's new TV, as a CD player for a Car and so far it has worked really well. I was particularly impressed with the MP3 menus and playback quality. I am buying now the cables to play in progressive scanning format on my HDTV (not included), so that I'm still waiting to test. In general I could not find a piece of equipment with these features alltogether, if you add the price tag it's just amazing.

The comments about picture quality on the LCD screen are inaccurate. On a plane and in the car I had people watching from all angles and they could see the movie that was playing. Also I went through bumpy roads in a car and it never once skipped the sound/picture. Speakers are OK but once you connect the oudio ouputs to headphones/car speakers though a cassette adapter or a TV you won't be disappointed.

I've only owned it for about two weeks so the long term quality is something I have not checked, but i bought a 2 yr service plan just in case. If you read the manual, everything works well, but in some casese intuition does not work and you need to read. If you don't mind reading, then that's all it takes to fully enjoy this little thing and it does deliver!

Summary: nice features
Review: It has some nice features, but over all performce wasn't well. Battery fully charged didn't get a full hour out off. Heated up pretty much when played plugged in to ac for the amount of time it took to watch 1 movie. Not practical to run off of battery.
Maybe if you use in dc or ac if you don't mind the heat. Hot enough that I did not like holding on lap. But then it is not a portable dvd if you have to plug it in. I was discouraged with its ablity to work off battery. Didn't play blank recorded dvd disk to well. At first I thought disk but played in other players no problem. I sent back for refund, not because of playing of blank disk. But overall performce is not close to what advertized. Buttons did not seem like they would take alot of wear. If you are looking for something to hang on back of a car seat and plug into car for the kids to watch cartoons on and don't want to spend alot of money. Maybe this is what you want. But although it has alot of features, it lacks quality.
