Summary: Intriguing book...hard to put it down!
Review: This book was purchased for my son, in part, because it was a Newberry award winner. He left it in the car while he was at an appointment, and I picked it up and started reading it. It was so interesting, I had to read the whole book before I gave it back to him! It was a very fluent style of writing and held one captivated. Because of the theme (a juvenile prison camp), I was concerned that there might be inappropriate situations or language in the book. However, it was quite wholesome. My husband read it also, and he really enjoyed it. The book certainly gives cause to think of consequences of behavior and explores the dynamics of a group of teenage boys and their different backgounds and situations. Goes to prove you can't always judge a person by his outward appearance (looks and/or intelligence). It also shows who are your true friends--not just those who pretend to be friends when they want something. This is one of the most refreshing and uplifting books I have read in a long time.

Summary: Holes
Review: This book was quite unusual. It was weird but not too weird the plot was imaginitive and inventive. The book is an intricate jigsaw puzzle which keeps you guessing untill the end. Stanley Yelnats is unjustly sent to Camp Green Lake boy's detention center. There is no lake, and nothing is green except for two giant oak trees, between which is stretched a hammock the hammock. The hammock belongs to the Camp Warden, and nobody can lie in it but her .The Camp Warden makes everybody dig one hole five feet deep and five foot wide everyday. After a while it becomes clear to Stanley that she isn't just trying to build character, but that she is looking for something. But what could be buried in the middle of the desert? I highly reccomend this book.

Summary: Humorous! Read it now!!
Review: This book was really good. I don't think adults will appreciate it as much as 9-13 year olds will. It starts with a boy named Stanley Yelnats who must go to a camp where all they do is dig holes in 100 degree weather. The camp is for kids who committ crimes.

Summary: This book was THE BEST!
Review: This book was really, really good. I have read 100 books this school year. I'm in 4th grade. I would have to say this book is the best book I have ever read. I look at the sales and there weren't many sold well I say it should be the best-selling book in THE WORLD! This book has even won the 1999 JOHN NEWBERRY but it seems Amazon didn't put that there. Well I think everyone should read this book! Plus I'm in 4th grade and I read this book in 2 days! This book is about 235 pages! So now that you know how good it is GET IT!

Summary: Why should kids have all the enjoyment?
Review: This book was recommended to me by a librarian. I like everything about the book - characterization, multiple plot lines that come together, imagery, and lessons about a wide variety of subjects. It also assumes intelligence in the reader, and that the reader will keep things in mind. A satisfying ending completes the many pleasures of this book.

Summary: There's Something Below the Surface.
Review: This book was recommended to me by about 100 different 3rd-7th graders. As someone who is interesting in what youth are reading, I asked kids I taught and counseled at camp if there were any books they thought I should read. HOLES always was mentioned. I now understand why.

HOLES is the story about Stanley Yelnats IV. Stanley's family is not very wealthy and Stanley's father is an inventor who works with old sneakers. Stanley is convicted of stealing a pair of shoes worn by a famous baseball player that were going to be auctioned off for a children's home. Stanley is sentenced to work at Camp Green Lake, a place that is neither a camp, green, nor a lake. Every day the "campers" have to dig a five foot by five foot by five foot hole. While at Camp Green Lake, Stanley befriends another boy, Hector Zeroni. The boys' lives quickly become intwined as events of the story unfold.

HOLES is an exciting book and rather well written. Much of the story reminded me of the movie COOL HAND LUKE and Stanley is in many ways just like Cool Hand Luke. However, the story is also greatly different from that wonderful movie, especially how HOLES constantly weaves together two seemingly different stories from two different time periods; an element that made me enjoy the story that much more.

Overall, an intriguing book filled with twists and turns that children love and that adults will enjoy, too.

Summary: Absolutely AWESOME!!!
Review: This book was so totally GOOD! My friend told me about it 'cause her class was reading it, and she said it was really good, so I bought it, and she was right! My new fave book! Plus, it is one of the first books that has a movie that does not have many variations from the book. If you have not read the book, read it, then go see the movie!

Summary: One of the most wonderful books I've ever read!
Review: This book was so well written! I read it aloud to my class, & they were mezmerized. They would beg me to not stop reading each day. The inter-woving of several stories kept the excitement alive. The relationship between two of the main characters really touched my heart. The committment to one another's freedom & well-being was refreshing. I'm recommending to children and adults alike!
