Rating: Summary: The Best Book I've Ever Read Review: I could not put this book down! Even though it's almost a thousand pages, I read it from cover to cover in a week! A must read book that you will not be able to put down. Each page brought a new twist. I guarantee you won't be dissappointed!
Rating: Summary: Inspiring journey Review: Mr. Lamb has written a novel that takes you through a wonderful insight of one man's struggle to identify himself. It is a long book but stick with it. It has opened my eyes to so much in the past few days since I finished it. Without giving too much away it gives a fresh look at acceptance of who we are and forgiveness. I wasn't looking forward to reading it at first because of the length but somehow this brilliant author keeps the pages turning. My only hesitation in giving it a complete rave review was that it took a while to get interested in the journal of the grandfather. The journal, however, eventually becomes very engrossing and a key that helps to unlock some of the many mysteries behind Dominic's family. The ending was perhaps a bit too tidy but I believe that was a point the author was making. Life is what you make of it, right? In other words---read it!
Rating: Summary: I Know this Much is True Review: Wally Lamb creates very complex and believale characters in this story of a man with a twin brother, dead mother, ex-wife, sleaze-ball best friend, abusive step-father and a hysterical sense of humor. The characters have different sides to them, like real people. They don't have only one defining characteristic. Instead, the characters are diverse and Lamb allows the reader a chance to realy understand each person.
Rating: Summary: This book is magical! Review: First of all, I did not read this book because Oprah recommended it. I read it because I LOVED She's Come Undone. Books are hard to come by in my country because they're very expensive and it takes them a while to reach bookstores. Luckily, my mom went to a convention in the States shortly after this book was published an brought it back for me. This book is just excellent. Mr. Lamb's ability to write in his character's voice is nothing short of amazing. I took this book with me to the hospital when I was in labor and I felt no pain, because I was so engrossed in it. My only disappointment was that I had to put it down in order to have a C-section! Mr. Lamb's insights into human nature and his vivid portrayal of complex relationships were both moving and true to life. And as a sucker for a happy ending I was completely satisfied. I've read this book many times and have never ceased to enjoy it or find something new in it each time. Mr. Lamb, I eagerly await your next book, please hurry!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Amazing! Review: By the end of this book, I felt like I was living the life of Dominick. I cried when he did, laughed when he did, and felt all his emotions. I read most of this book on the beach during my honeymoon, and boy did I get sunburned!
Rating: Summary: Hollywood pulp Review: Wally Lamb did his research then through it all into the book in the worst cliched characters I've come across in a while. Cliched twins, cliched, cliched scizophrenic character, cliched stepfather, cliched institution, cliched Italian immigrant and the list goes on.This is not to say this was,nt a page turner, it was, but it doesn't deserve any literary recognition. He should take out the last chapter, it just such a hollywood wrap up and takes all our imagination away. This book won,t drag me into reading an American book for a while .
Rating: Summary: Extremely Moving & Memorable Review: I read "She's Come Undone" several summers ago and to this day many parts are still crystal clear in my memory. It was my favorite book until "I Know This Much Is True". I was unable to put it down and I stayed up too late many a night reading it. I laughed out loud often and cried a few times too. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Hmmm...Sounds a bit familiar... Review: Okay, this book is about twins. Fitting, because I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE is virtually identical to another book I know and love--THE PRINCE OF TIDES, written by Pat Conroy. Although Conroy has a tendency to sound a bit like a schmaltzy food critic, PRINCE OF TIDES is a much better story (and better written, too) than this practically plagiarized piece by Lamb. Conroy should sue.But don't take my word for it. Read PRINCE OF TIDES and then compare it to TRUE. If you're not horrified by Mr. Lamb's obviously stolen storyline, see your opthalmologist. But maybe I'm not being fair. Perhaps Mr. Lamb read PRINCE OF TIDES long ago, forgot he'd read it, and then thought he had an original idea for TRUE. Or maybe he's Pat Conroy's evil and less talented twin brother. ACK! Now THAT would be an interesting story. Mr. Lamb, I loved SHE'S COME UNDONE. I have a first edition printing that I bought in a bargain bookstore nearly four years before Ms. Winfrey discovered it. It has a place of honor on my bookshelf (even if sometimes I wonder--seven years as an inpatient in a psychiatric hospital? SEVEN YEARS? COME ON! but I digress...). But you should be ashamed of this "new" book. I was also annoyed and bored by the writing style. Must EVERY sentence begin with a verb? And must it all be staccato? Example: "Went home. Ate some bread. Slept. Got up. Painted the house. Became roaringly bored. Threw book across the room." I took Advanced Composition in high school, too, Mr. Lamb. But I'm not wasting my readers' time and money trying to prove it to them. Bottom line: This isn't a horrible book. But it's dangerously similar to Pat Conroy's earlier novel. Also, TRUE is trite, dull, and not very well-written. Read PRINCE OF TIDES instead.
Rating: Summary: A real page turner! Review: This 900-plus page novel was an incredible page-turner. I couldn't put it down. Lamb deftly recounted the tragic events of Dominick Birdsey's life (past and present) into a tightly woven masterpiece. Lamb's vivid story of Dominick's life is emotionally gripping. I could not wait for the next opportunity to pick up the book again and continue where I had left off. I have recommended this book to all my friends.
Rating: Summary: One of the best I've ever read ! Review: Make sure you have a box of tissues handy ! Wally Lamb has created a masterpiece. His research was done so well that you would swear he lived this story himself. If you like " I know this much is true ", just wait until you read his other masterpiece, " She's Come Undone. "..... ABSOLUTLEY BRILLIANT !
