Rating: Summary: Excellent- a must read! Review: An engrossing and truly touching story. Wally Lamb is a gifted treasure of a writer.
Rating: Summary: Better than most, but not as good as many. Review: Wally Lamb is a good writer, that can not be denied, but as this book wore on, I found it becoming more and more pedantic. A ggod writer does not need to have his protagonist endlessly analyze the events in order to make a point. There was also such an overburdening of obvious symbolism and foreshadowing as to make the book tedious in the extreme. I found myself waiting for events (the return of the manuscript, the discovery of certain family secrets whihc I don't really want to reveal lest others not expect them) which I knew would come eventually, the buildup had been so obvious. From shortly after the start, I knew that it would end as it did. I just wish it had gotten there less abruptly and unsatisfyingly. A 900 page book should have space for a better ending.
Rating: Summary: a most compelling saga of the human condition Review: I was in the hospital recovering from major hospital when my husband brought me this "tome". I immediately was drwan into the rich fabric of the elaborate tapestry Mr.Lamb has created. It is one of the finest pieces of literature it has been my privilege to cry with and triumph over!
Rating: Summary: Of two minds Review: "I Know This Much is True" is certainly an impressively long novel. Slow at the beginning, I was on page 400 or so before I began to care at all about the characters. By about page 700, I was hooked, but that's a long time to wait for your attention to be fully engaged. The novel almost lost me during the seemingly interminable translations of the grandfather's autobiography.
Rating: Summary: An astounding look at people and their relationships. Review: I avoided reading I Know This Much is True because I was afraid it wouldn't measure up to She's Come Undone (Lamb's first book), which I loved. I was wrong! Lamb's ability to weave characters in and out of the fabric of his story is only surpassed by his ability to show true human nature in relationships. I loved this book, all 1000 pages!
Rating: Summary: I know this one is great Review: Just finished this marathon...wonderfully and warmly written with less of the somewhat disjointed prose which characterized his first book. Mr. Lamb is developing into an easily readable author who possesses that great quality sought for by those of us with hectic lives...namely his books are easily readable, easy to put down for another day, while not missing a beat, and written in the prose which we baby boomers can relate to. Like a Mahler symphony...our main character spends most of the opus in hell...only to recover in a blaze of glory at the end..kinda gives you goose-pimples and warm fuzzies, that last chapter. My only criticism..too much hell, not enough heaven...you'll see...one of my favorite reads of all time..not to be missed by anyone.
Rating: Summary: brilliant, absolutely one of the 5 best books I've ever read Review: This novel is so well done that I continued to think it may have been a true story. It is heartfelt, beautifully written and sucks the reader in. I couldn't put it down. I would say the author has the ability to invite the reader on a journey with him. Much like "A Prayer for Owen Meany", "Prince of Tides", and other Conroy novels. You will not be sorry, believe me, you'll be telling everyone you know to read this book.
Rating: Summary: The best book I have read in a long time Review: I was a little intimidated by the volume of this book but it was worth it. And then some. It started out well and just got better and better. I couldn't put it down. Wally Lamb is an incredible talent.
Rating: Summary: A novel which made me ponder its content for days Review: Wally Lamb's book is incredible. It tells the story of so many people with clarity and honesty which I found very refreshing. I recommend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Stay with this book and it will stay with you. Review: During the first hundred pages, I was longing for my unread Spenser novel! Somehow, I got hooked shortly thereafter and now plan to give this wonderful novel to my therapist. He will certainly enjoy it as much as I did.
