Rating: Summary: GOOD THINGS DO COME IN BIG SIZES!! Review: I could not put this book down. There was never a dull moment in this book. I loved the way that there were two stories in one. It was a beautifuly written book that made me laugh and cry. I can't wait to read his third novel. Keep it up Wally!!
Rating: Summary: One of the most profoundly human novels I've read. Review: This novel is the story of one man searching his soul to find the truths in his life. It chronicles the trials and tribulations of the sane twin in a pair of indentical twind one of which whom is schezophrenic. This novel Is about the strenght of the human spirit and how one copes with depression. It is quite possibly one of the best fiction novels by a contemporary novel. Spanning three genrations,Wall Lamb's eloquently written novel is as sad and dark as it is happy and optomistic. It truly pays off for all who choose to read it. It is a true experience.
Rating: Summary: Forest Gump meets Martin Heidegger Review: The author is extremely skilled at character development, and gifted at developing character flaws. The premise of the book is interesting, but improbable, at best (Forest Gump). The existential angst (Heidegger) is thoroughly exploited in this novel, in both the constructive and perjorative senses. This is a novel for the person who wants a complex version of "Life is full of difficulties. In the end, everything works out for the best." The broad appeal of this book suggests that most of us do not think that anyone has it quite so bad as each of us finds our lives to be. Further, the "Gumpian" lemmings will be relieved to find that everything works out just hunky dorey for EVERYMAN, every time. Wally Lamb is a gifted writer, and is probably amazed at how well a simple story formula succeeds in appealing to our neurotic need to believe in improbable outcomes. I applaud his talents. I just hope that the self-help crowd does not inundate us with some new "Celestine Prophecy Rules for being a person-in-a-world-that-seems insufferable-but-it-is-just-an-illusion-and-I-am the-first-one-to-figure-it-out" movement.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful piece of literature Review: I know this much is true was a breathtaking, heartwrench novel that kept my attention to the point that I read it in three days. It was very well worded, had an excellent story line and I never lost interest. I have to applaud Wally Lamb, as there are not many authors that can write a 900 page novel and keep the reader as captivated as he did. I would reccommend this book to everyone, but I will warn that it is not a light read - it is pretty heavy, but yet, an excellent piece of literature.
Rating: Summary: The best novel I have ever read!!! Review: I can't say enough about this truly wonderful novel. Mr. Lamb has the ability to take us from one setting to another, one year to another, one lifetime to another, with ease and understanding through his amazing writing ability. The story is powerful and insightful.
Rating: Summary: A Long Read, but Truly Worth It!! Review: Lamb is a brilliant author that combines humor, cynicism, and compassion into a heartfelt, bittersweet story about sibling rivalry and a brother's promise to care for his schizophrenic brother. This book starts out slow, but soon after, I found myself strangely intrigued by Dominick's life struggles. Considering the complexity of his relationship with his brother and the mystery surrounding their biological father, this story really allows the reader to explore the many "why's?" in a person's life. Dominick is a complex and troublesome character that I found I could identify and sympathize with. If nothing else, this 900+ page novel, caused me to reflect upon the burdens in my own life, as well as the personal relationships that often add stress to our already heavy loads.
Rating: Summary: Very worth however much time it takes to read the 900 pages Review: This book is fantastic and I was so engrossed by it that it ruled whatever free time I had. Finishing this and finding out what happened to each character was a priority for me. Wally Lamb makes you truly care about the characters. There were so many emotions evoked in every chapter. Don't let the length psyche you out. You will be changed forever after having read this masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: A Window Into Family History Review: I did love this book and found fascinating the relationships between Dominick and all the important characters in his life. But what kept me reading at every possible opportunity was the Grandfather's story that was so influencial in Dominick's eventual healing. What an amazing chance to get a detailed glimpse into the lives of his ancestors! I loved the parallels that ran between the main narrative and the family history. I wish my grandparents had left such a gift of history to me!
Rating: Summary: emotionally moving Review: This book has to be one of the most powerful and moving i have ever read. At times during the book i felt like yelling at dominick and make him realize what HE had done. It made me cry a few times too and it surprised me and made me laugh. At times it seemed to drag on but probably because i stayed up so late wanting to keep reading and find out what happened. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! And like someone before me said, it takes a little patience to read the story and fully understand.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Read!. Complex , disturbing and gratifying. Review: Wally Lamb has created a powerful story about twins and the psychological consequences of having an identical brother for whom one feels responsible to and for. From the beginning I found this book to be totally engrossing but emotionally painful to read. There were times I had to put it aside for a breather. How does Mr. Lamb come up with these characters? Dominic's journey of self discovery is difficult but finally, entirely gratifying. A joyous and triumphant ending!! I loved this book. I think Wally Lamb is truly one of the most impressive writers of our time. If he never wrote another book, his two contributions thus far have placed him firmly in our collective, literary consciousness.
