Summary: impossible to put down.
Review: this book was just beautiful. there was such an amazing and intricate web of stories created - stories that wove themselves together seamlessly about an ordinary man and his extraordinary life. the realism of the book was astonishing, and lamb is completely frank about the imperfections of his characters. it's a must-read.

Summary: I loved this book -- great!
Review: I just finished reading this book and I loved it. I was facinated with the interworven storylines, the intergenerational interplay, and the various mysteries which were tantalizingly revealed. I'm so glad Dominick finally got to learn who his father was. And glad of his good fortune at the end -- he certainly earned it with a hard life up to then. I heartily recommend this book -- it's great.

Summary: the best book I've read in a long time!
Review: I received this book from my mother a week before I was to leave for France. I was hoping to finish it before I left but didn't. I had the hardcover and didn't want to lug around throughtout France, so I went and bought the paper back. There was no way I was going to leave and pick it up when I got back home. I had to bring it with me. Every chance I could in Paris I stole a few moments to myself to read more of Dominick's story. I actually read during the wee hours of the night and jet lagged with the flashlight in bed. (I didn't want to wake my husband!) As we drove through France I read to my husband and filled him in on what was happening. I thought I had figured out who the father was in the beginning, but to my incredible suprise, I was wrong. What an amazing story. I'm reading another book now and I wish I was still reading, This Much I Know is True.

Summary: A MASTERPIECE
Review: I have just finshed this book and at the same time have wiped my tears. The chacters are real and I feel I know them. I see that the main problems that the other reviewers have with the book is the tidy ending and the subject matter. I had a problem with neither. I felt myself going back in to my own childhood and rememebering events that seem so distant and so far away. Mr. Lamb you are incredible and this book NEEDS to be taught in schools around the world. Thank you for writing this and enhancing my life.

Summary: Perfection in 900 pages.
Review: Wally Lamb has truly written "the great American novel". The story line, the characters...all were written so beautifully that I hated for this novel to end. The characters were all drawn so well..Domenick, of course but also Ray. His pain and guilt was almost palpable. By the end of the book, I felt that I knew Domenick and was happy to see him get back together with Dessa. He had grown. Some other reviewers have said that the ending was just too sweet. I say what's wrong with sweet? Don't make any major plans for a week. Stay home (or better yet, go to the beach!) with Domenick and really enjoy a great read!!!

Summary: Deeply engrossing, thought provoking
Review: Probably on of the best books I've picked up in a long time. Lamb makes one see ourselves through the lives of the characters, what we like and dislike about ourselves. Absolutely could not put it down. Intelligent and very readable.

Summary: WOW, what a book!
Review: I read this in 4 days! If you are a reader who appreciates good writing, I recommend this novel about tenderness and human relations. Lamb makes it look easy.

Summary: 812 pages wasn't enough!
Review: I LOVED this book. I admit, it took a while to get into. The first couple of chapters were difficult to follow through the different time periods, but eventually I got hooked. The compelling character of Domenick, his fears, failures, and faults, added to the book's appeal. It is one of those books where you actually feel like you KNOW the main character in real life, and it's a loss when you've finished reading because you won't be hearing from him again.

Although my daughters called this "Mom's really depressing book" the entire time I was reading it (and sometimes it was), the salvation came with the underlying truths and realities of life (Domenick's, yours, and mine).

I would highly recommend this book not as a light read, but as a thoughtful journey into the threads that are woven into the fabric of each of our lives.

Summary: Worth the wait!
Review: I anxiously awaited the paperback version of this book, and was it ever worth it! A huge paperback, but I was still unable to put it down. One of the very few books I can honestly say...I wish I hadn't read it, just so I could read it again for the first time! Thank you Wally, you're the master!

Summary: great reading
Review: it was great reading. You could feel the fear the boys had of their father.

You can scarely put the book down but it was so emotionally exhausting that I had to leave it times . The author really takes you inside of the characters lives and you remember things that happen to you as you travel thru your own life. I am not quite finised but hope something good happens to this beautiful sensitive man.
