Rating: Summary: I Know This Much Is False. . . Review: I was hoping to read something as stellar as "She's Come Undone," but was disappointed. I'm still not sure what the whole point of this novel was. At first, it seemed to be a statement about the effects of mental illness on the patient and his family. Then, the author swerved into the grandfather's autobiography, which included some tasty parts about his mother-in-law's Italian experiences (ie. killing a man by adding crushed glass to his food). There were many times when, while reading the book, I felt exasperated and misled. And it was far too long! Why so many pages?
Rating: Summary: WHAT A BOOK!!!! Review: I read "She's come undone" and thought this book, while very diffrent, was just as good. There were some hard spots to get through, but I read it in less than a week! Their lives were hell but, in the end, Hurray for Dominick. His obstacles were huge and almost never ending but, he made it. I can't wait for Wally Lambs next release!!!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful journey culminating in a mediocre destination Review: I was thoroughly sucked into this book, including the story within a story of the main character's grandfather. I loved the imperfections of Dominick, et al., but was very disappointed in the neatly wrapped-up ending. Life doesn't all work out in the end and I was not expecting it here. Everything leading up to the last few pages, however, was exquisite.
Rating: Summary: A bit of a let-down! Review: First of all, I read his first novel "She's Come Undone" in about one night because it was so wonderfull. I really thought that this book would have been the same way, but I can't even get past the first hundered or so pages! The book is nowhere as gripping as his first....I do feel though that you can enjoy this book, but if you are getting it thinking that it will compare to his first, you will be let down!
Rating: Summary: a long read, but i couldn't put it down! Review: wally lamb has outdone himself. just when i thought he wouldn't be able to top the fabulous "she's come undone", he did! i can't recommend this book enough.
Rating: Summary: If I'm not into it 100 pages in, will I ever be? Review: I am also reading Tom Wolfe's new book, and there is no comparison. Lamb's book reminds me of a college creative writing effort, full of whining nonsense and what I consider a meandering story line. Everybody says it's so great, but I guess it's not my type of book. Everybody also said Prince of Tides was great, and I found it the same as Lamb's: a male author with a feminine style, a stream of consciousness tome from the perspective of an individual that I really don't like. Maybe I'll skip to the end to see if there ever was a point.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Wait to Put it Down! Review: I know he is still bathing in the Oprah Glow but one endorsement does not a good writer make. When I got to the end of the book I felt like Wally had been called to the phone or something and had to wrap it up real quick. He put all the Lego in place and tied it up with a big Hallmark bow! It left me feeling a bit cheated; I expected more from what he presented as a complex and challenging situation than a conclusion more fitting for a movie of the week! Maybe that was his motivation...if that is the case maybe Mr. Lamb should have Aaron Spelling review his next book; or better yet...he could help him write it.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I am a voracious reader, and this is by far the best book I have read so far in 1999. This is a moving story of redemption, laced with both deep sentiment and humor. So engrossing is Mr. Lamb's novel, you are never aware of its 897 page length---I was sorry to see it end. I highly recommend this book to anyone in search of a well-written, entertaining novel!!
Rating: Summary: one completely inadequate word: wonderful!!! Review: Wally Lamb's second novel accomplished what I thought was the impossible task of topping the first. I couldn't put it down. It swept me in and held me from page one until the end. Great character development, I felt like I WAS Dominick. I felt all the pain and sorrow, and in the end, the joy. Great book!!
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: I loved this book. I'm 15 and it was by far the longest book I have read. It grabed my attention from the first page and I coundn't put it down untill I finshed it. I even found myself saving my homework to do during other classes so I could read more. I feel this book has helped me see how hard some people have it and how strong they can be. It taught me alot about life and some of the problems that come along with it. I'm still trying to find a book that is as great as this one but I'm not having much luck, I think I'll read it again!
