Summary: A Pleasant Surprise
Review: First of all, I would like to say that to read this book would not be my first choice. In fact, a book called Esperanza Rising with a picture of a girl floating in the air is probably not any middle-schooler's first choice of a book. But, fortunatly, I have a really cool reading teacher that knows that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

Esperanza Rising is a story about an 12-year-old girl who lives in Mexico. She is fairly rich, and she lives on a big ranch with her parents.

Then, her perfect life falls apart. Her father dies, her powerful uncle threatens her, and her house is burned down. Esperanza is forced to flee to the United States with her mother in poverty to work in a labor camp. It is the very life she has never known.

This book tells Esperanza's story (A true one!) and how she must adjust to her new life. It is no wonder that in Spanish, Esperanza means, "Hope".

Summary: Riches to Poverty
Review: I read the Pura Belpré Award winning book Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. I give it four stars for its sensational plot and amazing characters.
This story hooks you from the very beginning. It's about a teenage girl who grew up on El Rancho de las Rosas, Aguascalientes, Mexico. She has a glorious life with expensive dresses, parties, and a loving Papa, Mama, and Abuelita. Her life suddenly turns upside down when her Papa is killed by a band of angry bandits on his way back from working in the fields. Esperanza, Mama, and the servant family escape from her angry uncles to a work camp in America. Esperanza must learn little tasks, such as sweeping or washing laundry, which she had never been faced with before. Mama's sudden illness of Valley Fever inspires Esperanza and gives her strength to bring her back to good health.
This story is based on the author's grandmother's real life experiences. You become close to the characters and can easily relate to their emotions. It's easy and enjoyable reading that also educates you on a true Mexican's life in an American work camp. It also informs you of striking within the camps; a feared and regular occurrence. Esperanza Rising gives you a foreign view of the important things in life. The story's beautiful ending and persevering characters is why I gave this book four stars. It gives you hope to never be afraid to start over.
Along with this book, I would also recommend The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares.
I am an 8th grader who loves to read.

The book Esperanza Rising is about a teenage girl named Esperanza who lives on El Rancho de las Rosas in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Esperanza always thought she would have a perfect life with big parties and pretty dresses, but something bad happened to her. One evening, the day before Esperanza's birthday, her father was out and got attacked by bandits. Miguel and Alfonso, Haotennsia's (the housekeeper) son and husband, went out to look for the remains of her father, but all they found was his belt buckle. The following day, Esperanza's father's stepbrother, Tio Luis asked Ramona, her mother, in marriage. She said no because Esperanza and Ramona didn't like him, he got so mad that he started a fire in their house so he could build a bigger house. During the fire, Abuelita, her grandmother got hurt. Finally, Ramona said yes, but she went with Hortensia and her family to California to find a job. Abuelita would follow them after she got well. When they moved to California, everything didn't go that well. One day when everyone was out, a big dust storm arrived. When they came back, Esperanza's mother got ill and coughed non-stop. She had to go to the hospital and Esperanza had to work hard to get her mother well and also had to get Abulieta to California. When Esperanza started working a strike was going on for more money. The government couldn't take it and tried to gather all of them and send them to Mexico. Miguel stole Esperanza's money without telling her, but surprised her at the train station with Abuelita. Everyone was glad she could reunite with her family.

I thought this book was excellent because it had great characters. "Mija, it is all we can afford." Esperanza's mother was telling Esperanza that they didn't have money and had to start a new life. Esperanza wasn't ready to start over because she loved celebrating at big fiestas and being able to wear pretty dresses. Esperanza had to start over by living in California, but if she didn't she would have to live with Tio Luis, her uncle that she hated. She gave it a try and everything didn't go that bad at all.

"We got a message from Miguel." Hortensia and Alfonso stopped Esperanza from working and had to bring her to the train station. She didn't know what was going on. When she arrived at the station, the train just arrived. Miguel came out and she still didn't know what was going on. The last person that stepped out of the train made Esperanza very shocked. It was Abulieta. Abuelita and Esperanza were so glad to see each other. Esperanza showed Abulieta where Ramona was and everyone was glad that Abuelita came back.

My least favorite part of the book was when Esperanza's mother, Ramona, got ill and coughed from a dust storm. This was my least favorite part because Esperanza was having a hard time because she thought she would lose her mother after her father died and when Abuelita was far away. This was the saddest part of the book, but it ended by when everyone living happily ever after because Abulieta came after a year had gone by. This was a great book and it will want you to keep on reading.

Summary: Esperanza Rising
Review: Esperanza Rising Scholastic, 2000, 262 pp.,... Pam Munoz Ryan ISBN 0439120411

Imagine having a perfect life. Then suddenly everything turns upside down. Well, this is exactly what happened to Esperanza Ortega, a young Spanish girl who grew up on a ranch in Mexico. All of her troubles started out when her father died.
In Mexico at this time woman weren't thought of as important enough to own a house or anything of value, which was the man of the houses' job. Her father's death meant that she and her mother would have to fend for themselves. They would have made it out OK if only Esperanza's uncle, Tio Louis, decided that he wanted to take over the plantation, so he forced Esperanza and her mother out of their ranch. From there they went to work hard, long hours on some one else's ranch for nearly no money. When they finally stared to get used to their new situation the author decides to throw in yet another twist.
Esperanza Rising is based on a true story of a young Mexican girl fighting for her and her mother's lives. I would give this award winning book 4.5 out of 5 stars and I would recommend this easy read to anyone between the ages of 10 and 30. I would especially recommend it to people who get bored in the beginning of a lot of books, because Esperanza Rising gets right to the point, and also people who like adventure books will find this book exciting.

Summary: Espernza Rising
Review: How would you feel if your life started to fall apart? Esperanza gets everything she wants and her life is perfect. Until one day her father is killed by bandits. Esperanza and her mother must runaway from their hometown to avoid an awful man her mother may be forced to marry. They stop at a camp where the two do farm work. They earn just enough money to put food on the table. Then, one day a big sandstorm comes and Momma catches Scarlet Fever. Esperanza must work while her mother is in the hospital. The doctor won't allow her to stay by her side until she gets better.
Pam Munoz Ryan describes the actions so I was able to visualize them. Esperanza Rising is blissful at times yet depressing at others. I was so enveloped in the book I could not put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction and survival stories.

Summary: Are there any better words invented to describe this book?
Review: Esperanza Rising is about a Mexican girl, named Esperanza Ortega who lived in Mexico in around the 1930s. Esperanza lived on a huge ranch, called El Rancho de la Rosas, with servants. She was very fortunate and her family was rich-that was until her father died right before her birthday. Mr. Ortega's cruel stepbrother, Luis, forces Mrs. Ortega to marry him, but she doesn't. Knowing that if she did, her family would live a miserable life, she doesn't accept. Luis sets the big ranch on fire as a threat. The Ortegas escape with a servant family to California to search for work.
After arriving at California, Esperanza and the others work and live on a camp. Because of their race and culture, they are discriminated against others. Esperanza, who is used to being a princess-treated-like girl, has to learn how to work and hope for a better life. Soon, Mrs. Ortega is diagnosed with pneumonia and Esperanza knows that she has to work harder to pay for the doctor bills. Life is hard there, but Esperanza knows that there is something to look fowrad to in her new life.
I think this book teaches about the life back then in California
and about hope. I like this book because it gives us a chance to really know how fortunate we are. On top of all the other things, I love this book because it's really realistic and you could feel the depressing moments, but even the little happiness to you is like a miracle to them.
I would recommend this book to anyone starting from third grade. You wouldn't be able to put this book down for even a minute without thinking about it! READ IT!!!!!!!
