Summary: Cross the River With Esperanza!
Review: There are many books and movies out there about young people and their families as they struggle to survive in Mexico and then in California when they decide to cast their lot with the American Dream...Esperanza has everything she could ever want or need on her father's El Rancho de las Rosas near Aguascalientes, Mexico, when he is killed by bandits in 1924. Esperanza and her mother must flee their ranch and her evil uncles, with the help of their loyal servants. She loses every privelege she had when she crosses the river to Southern California, where she must confront her own issues of classism and work to save her mother's life. Very exciting book! The friendship between Miguel. the son of her family's servants, helps Esperanza learn that they are equals in their newly adopted country. The author tells us that this is a fictionalized account of how her real abuelita came to the United States, which makes the story even more enjoyable. Can't wait to have my students read this book!

Review: I like this book a lot because it has a lot of emotion like when her father died her mom got sick ect.,and most of all
it's a really realistic book/story because what happens to esperanza could happen for real.it's not a fairy tale.It is not fiction. That's why i like this book.At first you're not going to like Esperanza's charecter, but as her charecter changes you're going to like her more.

Review: This book is the true to life story of Esperanza Ortega by Pam Munoz Ryan. She is a very rich and happy girl until her dad is killed by bandits the day before her birthday. THen her uncle burns down their house because without her father, they're virtually nothing. Then he asks her mother to marry him. She pretends that she will but in the middle of the night before the wedding they pack their stuff and head for California with their servants. They have a very hard life their and her mother almost dies. They turn out ok though. Esperanza and the servant boy fall in love and eventually get married ( this part isn't in the story, but it's in the authors note after the book) Anyways every rich AND poor person should read his book it's great.

Summary: Princess To Peasant
Review: Esperanza Rising was an interesting book to read. This book was about a girl that had challenges throughout her life to help her family succed in life. She worked in farm fields picking up crops everyday. Esperanza's mother had to depend on her ever since she got sick and couldnt work. Esperanza started having a stressful life but finaly found a way to help her self succed through her challenges. Its no wonder in Spanish, esperanza means "hope".

My opinion on this book is that everyone should read it and learn from her strugles. I thnk this book will be very emotional to others like it did to me. I dont really enjoy reading but this book really caught my attention since it was so interesting. I would recomend this book for others to read it. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Summary: Esperanza Rising
Review: This is a fabulous book for students to read in the classroom because of the integration of history and social studies with reading and writing in the classroom. If you are a parent--you and your children will enjoy reading and talking about this book together.

Used in literature circles, as a classroom novel, or as a student choice book--it teaches important concepts, experiences, and realities for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans following the revolution, and peasant farmworkers living in America in the 1930s. It is a great historical fiction!

It is also a wonderful book for exploring and understanding differing perspectives, coming of age, death in the family, and leadership. I highly recommend this book for 4-7th graders (and even adults!).

Summary: Esperanza Rising, got my Esperanza Rising
Review: Imagine a wealthy family living in Aguascalientes, Mexico on El Rancho De Las Rosas, a large farm with a vineyard. In this family, there is a loving mother, a kind and generous father, a wise grandmother, and a young daughter. They live contentedly in a mansion and have many servants to do their bidding. The daughters name is Esperanza, and while she is waiting with excitement for her birthday, (coming the day after) her father is murdered by bandits. Esperanza's happy world suddenly crashes down upon her in a sea of grief and despair. Esperanza and what's left of her family make the long journey to America in hopes of creating a new life. They soon learn that America is not an easy place to make a living, and they have to work hard to support themselves. Things start to look up for Esperanza, until chaos enters her world again as her mother falls ill. Esperanza must work the hardest she ever has to single-handedly support her family, and must keep her hopes for a better life. In Spanish, Esperanza means hope, and her hope is certainly rising.
Set during World War 2, this historical fiction novel is one you just can't put down. I really enjoyed this book because while it was educational, it was a great story enriched with fabulous characters who you felt you really knew, fabulous settings, and Spanish phrases that helped to set the mood of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a captivating story that you won't want to put down, especially young girls and boys who need to learn how good their life is. This book won the Jane Adams Children's Award, and I certainly understand why. This book is very uplifting, saying: Aquel que hoy se cae, se levantara manana. He who falls today may rise tomorrow, and gives Esperanza to all.

One day, her dad was standing outside and strikers came by and shot him. So, now they were in even bigger trouble. They had to move to California to get away from the strikers.
