Rating: Summary: I was intrigued Review: I bought this book for my Spanish classes, hoping to introduce my students to other cultures through literature. I have no doubt this book will help me accomplish my goal.I sat down to read the book last night, and found myself ignoring my husband so that I could finish it before bed. I cried as Esperanza struggled, slightly embarassed to be crying over a children's book. This is a well written book with an exciting plot and believable characters, each of whom found a way into my heart in short time. It is also historical fiction, based on the author's family. There is an epilogue that explains historical reality during that era (Great Depression, San Joaquin Valley) I would strongly recommend this book, as a teacher, and as a person who just loves to read.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: I am a fourth grade teacher who was lucky enough to come across this book. My students loved it! It is about a young rich girl who becomes poor. It is the reversal of a Cinderella tale - Riches to Rags. This book displays the strength of one young girl and her mother. It is great to use if you want to compare how the character changes from beginning to end.
Rating: Summary: Coming of Age Review: Pam Munoz Ryan, author of books for adults as well as younger readers, gives us a story of hope, class and cultural struggle in the historical fiction novel Esperanza Rising. Set in 1920's Mexico and pre-Great Depression United States, it is the fictional story of Esperanza, on the eve of her 13th birthday. A grand celebration is planned on El Rancho de las Rosas, the family's ranch ' and instead of presents, Esperanza's father is murdered by bandits. This sets the stage for the consequences that follow for Esperanza and her family, and pits her against challenges that she must face in order to grow into a young woman. Leaving behind all she loves ' her grandmother, the ranch with its seasonal fruits and many roses, her beloved Mexico ' Esperanza, together with her mother, join the family's mechanic and maid (Alfonso, his son Miguel and Hortencia) as they immigrate to California's San Joaquin Valley to work in the agricultural fields picking crops on a company-owned labor camp. Readers' hearts will ache as they experience the sharp contrasts between this life and Esperanza's former life in Mexico. Ryan presents a well told story loosely based, we learn in the beneficial Author's Notes, on her maternal grandmother's own experiences. Interspersed throughout the story are metaphors and sayings on the part of Abuelita (Esperanza's grandmother left behind in Mexico) that can be fully actualized by the reader and the main character of Esperanza at the end of the book. Ryan also successfully contrasts world events of the time (effects of the Mexican Revolution, the migration of Oklahoma Dust Bowl victims to California and conflicts between the Mexican laborers and the U.S. government) with the determination of Esperanza's family to establish stability in a new land, all while teaching readers Spanish words and Mexican customs. A powerful story with relatable characters, this belongs on every shelf with its message of growth, struggle and hope.
Rating: Summary: Yuck, yuck, yuck Review: ...This book doesn't have any humor, that's for sure. It is as dry as a drought. (That means really dry, .... It's plot is also pretty much as exciting as a five hour lecture on how much TV children should be able to watch. (That means it's duller than dull... The plot is corny, dumb, and childish. I really couldn't like this book less if I tried. You would think this book is too bad to get published. Turns out it's not.
Rating: Summary: A childish cliched book Review: What to expect if you want to buy Esperanza Rising: 1. Easy reading for grades high 4th- early 6th. 2. Over-detailed EVERYTHING. 3.A cliched unoriginal plot. Well, that's at least what I think of this book. It's about a young girl (Esparanza, obviously) who goes from being a very rich, sheltered girl to a very poor girl who must work like she has never worked before. She must "rise" over her situation and deal with her poverty. I know a lot of people like this book, but I think you should only read this if you are desperate for a book. It is pretty dull, if you ask me.
