Summary: Little House in the Big Woods
Review: Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder is a excellant book. The book has a great veiw from the 1860's. There is Mary,Laura,Ma,Pa,Black Susan the cat and Jack the dog. They have a nice garden in the yard. The woods in Wisconsin is very nice. I really injoyed the book because it shows how they did things in 1860's. Includes how to churn butter and so much more.

Summary: A terrific series of books- even for boys!
Review: As a reviewer states above The Little House books are tradionally thought of as "girls books," but that is a mistaken notion. I cannot agree more. Yes, the copies of the Little House books at my house belonged to my older sister. Yes, the covers of all but one of these books show a girl. Yes, I never saw a boy in my grade school reading a Little House book. And yes, I consider myself a normal guy. Yet one day for some reason I started reading my sister's copy of Little House in the Big Woods. Maybe I read it because it was a tale from the past- I am huge history buff. Maybe I read it because I loved tales of survival in the wilderness. Maybe I was just looking for escapist reading. Whatever the reason I was hooked. I finished Little House in the Big Woods and then quickly devoured the rest of the series.

These were NOT "girly" books. Panthers, Indians, grass-hopper storms, bullies who beat up teachers, bears, thieves, blizzards, and other stories from the frontier helped make these books thrilling to a me. Yes, the protaganist is a girl; but what a girl! Laura is no sissy. She is actually quite the tomboy and not too hard for boys to relate to. Laura does become more feminine as she progresses from girlhood to being a young woman; but to a boy reader who had followed her adventures from Wisconsin onwards it was not too hard to still enjoy the later books in the series.

I have read and re-read these books numerous times. They are just terrific escapist entertainment. When I want to temporarily forget any troubles, I will occasionally return to the Little House books. They really have the uncanny ability to take the reader back to a more innocent and simpler time yet one also of great hardship, peril, and adventure. Terrific books for girls and BOYS!

Summary: Thoughts from an Elementary Education major
Review: I think this book is wonderful! I am an elementary education major, and read this book for my Media for Children class. I'm glad I did! This book is great for children in grades 3-5. It's a good way to talk about the pioneer days, and integrate it into an entire thematic unit. The illustrations were few and far between, but they were simple and beautiful. I definately recommend this book!

Summary: My summer reading assignment
Review: I read this book for one of my summer reading assignments. It is about a pioneer family with the parents and three girls and what their lives were like more than a hundred years ago. I would recommend this book becuase of some of the exciting stories of what pioneer life was like, but I did find some parts to be boring. My favorite part was when Uncle George tried to tap dance faster than grandma. If you only read one book about what a girl's life was like over a hundred years ago, I would recommend a different book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, about an Indian girl alone on an island off California. I thought this was a more exciting book to read.

Summary: If you love warm, family stories, this book is a good read
Review: Little House in the Big Woods, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, was fascinating. I think one of the reasons I liked it so much was because the Ingalls family was so close. One word that comes to mind is cozy. Maybe it's because they lived in a little house in the big woods. Or maybe it's becuase Pa used to play his fiddle by the fireside some evenings for Mary, Laura and Carrie. I remember when I read this book I was interested in the fact that they were pioneers. They might have moved from place to place but they always were positive about it. I loved reading about the three girls dancing at their Grandmother and Grandfather's house and having such a fun time. I remember Laura had a rag doll made out of a corncob that she loved so dearly. And it seemed as though the Ingalls family had such wonderful Christmases. In this book, there was nothing but simplicity. It didn't matter how much they moved or how they lived, as long as the family had each other.

Summary: The first book in a classic series.
Review: This book is the first in the noted "Little House" series of autobiographical books for children by Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957), daughter of Charles (1836-1902) and Caroline Ingalls (1839-1924) and sister to Mary (1865-1928) and Carrie (Caroline; 1870-1946). This first book takes place in the log cabin and farm in the woods a few miles from the small town of Pepin, Wisconsin, in 1871-1872. Through the eyes of a little girl, a real glimpse of frontier life is provided (we later discover that each book becomes more organized and developed, as if mirroring the growth of Laura Ingalls). The book is filled with descriptions of how settlers had to provide for themselves and how they still had time to sing and enjoy their lives. The Wilder series also points out how much women contributed in the frontier. These stories point out the frontier and restless spirit and character of a typical fronteir pioneer as well as the work ethic and patience of men and women who have to get all they need from nature. The series is considered one of the classics in children's literature. Every serious student of children literature should have a copy on their shelves. In addition, as mentioned above, the text is a great sourcebook for 19th century food, traditions, games, and songs that were common in a frontier home.
