Rating: Summary: Nice try, but uh... no. Review: Few dispute James Patterson's ability to produce a quality thriller. But we should dispute his ability to produce a romance novel at all. "Diary" is not only extremely predictable (the "tragic" ending was not only a long time coming, it actually produced a yawn), but it barely reads like a diary in the first place. For those of us who keep a diary, we usually pen in the present or near present (not like a novel). Suzanne's "Diary" reads like a novel, but with the entry "Dear Nick" or "Nicholas" at the top of every page.Secondly, if Suzanne were really writing an account of her life for her son, would she choose to mention how her husband "took her blouse off and let it drift to the floor" as well as other related phrases? Hopefully, my mother will never do such a thing for me. Yipes. I would say a romance novel would not tie well to your offspring. Poor Nicholas. The one thing that doesn't fail, however, is Patterson's reliable writing. Being a true fan of romantic stories (please differ from romance novels per se) this book doesn't cut it for me, but Patterson did manage to keep the writing up to his usual level of excellence. (Though not nearly as dense - figuratively and literally - as his other works.) But I think for now I'll just go back and read Kiss the Girls again. Sorry James.
Rating: Summary: I Didn't Want to Read this Book Review: I love Patterson and I have read most of his books. This book I was not interested in. My friend gave it to me one night and I picked it up and read a couple of pages. I was hooked! I couldn't put it down and when I was finished, I was sobbing. It was so moving. I still can't believe a man wrote this book, especially a man who writes such great stories about killing and kidnapping!!
Rating: Summary: James Patterson has outdone himself! Review: I have read at least 10 of James Patterson's books and I can truly say that this is totally different from any of his other books! I hope that this isn't the last of his romance novels. I've never felt like telling strangers to read a book, but I caught myself at the bookstore wanting to tell a lady that she should read this book! I have shared this book with five other ladies and have had nothing but praise from each of them! My daughter-in-law read it in one day. She couldn't put it down! Thanks for listening! I would highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Love This Book Review: I am an avid reader of James Patterson and I love all his Alex Cross mysteries but there was something different about this book and I absolutely loved it!! I couldn't put the book down and found myself reading it until late in the night. I cried at the ending and I found myself calling my girlfriend up to rave about the book. I passed it along to my friend the next day and I still haven't seen it back yet! It must have gone through about 15 people already. Excellent book- highly recommend!!
Rating: Summary: Handles Romance Like a Woman....and that's a Compliment! Review: This is the fourth book of JP's I've read this summer...okay, I was late to join his fan club and have a lot of catching up to do. Having read so many of his books in such a short span of time I can tell you what draws me to want to read the rest of what he's written. 1) He's the master of suspense. He knows how to construct a plot that keeps you turning the pages. 2) He creates characters you really care about. You find yourself cheering for them, whether it's Alex Cross or one of his "one-off" characters in his stand alone novels. 3) He's very kind to other authors and is constantly plugging other books he likes within his own novels.....I find this very generous. 4) He seems like a really nice guy.....last night I finished "Cradle and All" and was impressed by his sympathy for others. He's the kind of guy you wish there were more of in the world....especially single guys! (yes, I know he's married.) But he's the type you'd love to invite to a dinner party, he comes off as smart, entertaining, and compassionate towards those around him. 5) And finally, he writes really fun, fast-paced novels. They are an absolute pleasure to read! Bottom line.....I recommend all of his books!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Superb Reading...DO NOT pass up this book! Review: I must have passed over this book fifty times in numerous stores...WalMart, Books a Million, Barnes and Noble...even Amazon.com recommended the book to me about a week ago when I signed on to their site. I always looked at it, but I never picked it up. Then yesterday, I found myself in CVS Pharmacy picking up some cold medicine with my fiance. Well, the man in him got us over on the magazine aisle. The woman in me got me looking at the books. Once again, I saw this book. I looked at it again. But this time, I picked it up and I read the inside sleeve of the book. I was hooked from the very first paragraph. I was on my lunch hour, so I was extremely disappointed that I wouldn't get to start it until I got off work, picked up the kids, got through dinner, baths, and homework, and finally made into bed so I could read. Well, I found that I didn't have much to do in the afternoon when I got back to the office, so I started reading. I read most of the afternoon. I managed to tear myself away from the book long enough to do all the aforementioned daily grind, then I went back to reading. I read until almost midnight, when I finally made it to the end of the book, crying quietly so as not to wake up my fiance and completely freak him out with my tears! The book was nothing short of awesome. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I wanted to flip to the end of the book to get the outcome. I love suspense. My favorite author is Stephen King, for heaven's sake! How could I want so badly to find out the end of the book before I got there? Well, I'll tell you how. Never in reading a book have I been so torn between two main characters with my loyalty. Just when I started to like one more than the other, the plot twisted and I was back on the other side. It was unbelievable! And by the end, all I could do was thank my lucky stars for everything that I have in my life. I am so blessed. And "ISN'T IT LUCKY?" Read this book. Read it twice if you have time. With five kids and a full time job, I don't have time, so I am passing it on to my friend Melissa. I think she'll enjoy it. I've already warned her not to turn to the end...and like a good friend, I've told her to be ready to cry when she gets there. I hope that she too will pass it on. Reading is such a joy for me and sharing that joy makes it even better. "Isn't it lucky."
Rating: Summary: James Patterson Fanatic Review: I am an avid reader of James Patterson's. I absolutely adore his books! His books are admittedly "easy readers", HOWEVER he definitely knows how to grab hold of your attention from the very beginning all the way through to the end leaving you wanting more! 'Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas' is totally different from all his other novels- it is not a suspenseful thriller. It is a suspenseful romantic novel. It was beautifully written... I finished the book in one night- I couldn't put it down! I felt warm inside from the love that Matt shared with Suzanne and 'Nicky Mouse', and I wept sorrowfully in the end. I was elated when Katie finally understood what had happened to Matt and took him back. I felt as though I was right there... rooting them on... hoping they have a bright future together! If you are thinking this will be one of those 'Sappy to Happy Books', you're right. BUT you HAVE to read it anyway...
Rating: Summary: Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas Review: For sheer genre-crossing audacity, you might think nothing could outdo John Grisham's season on a Mississippi farm (A Painted House, p. 128) until you read this relentlessly throat-clutching love story from thrillermeister Patterson. The night Matt Harrison's editor Katie Wilkinson presents him with a contract for his new book of poems, she has even bigger news for him: She's pregnant. But she never gets to show him the silver rattle she's tucked into a drawer, because before she can share her news, he's gently but firmly walked out on her, leaving her high and dry with only a book for company. It's a diary Matt's wife Suzanne kept for their baby son Nicholas, and if Katie reads it, Matt urges, she'll understand better why he had to leave. The diary does explain a great number of things-how lowly Matt managed to enthrall a successful Boston physician like Suzanne, why Suzanne thought it would be a good idea to keep a diary for her infant child, why "we is always so much better than I," why "one today is worth two tomorrows," and how a propulsive storyteller like Patterson (Roses Are Red, 2000, etc.) can keep the pot boiling even without the help of Alex Cross and a high body count-but not why Matt left Katie. What's really important, though, is that Katie is on hand for a series of interludes to telegraph exactly when to laugh and when to cry for audiences that missed The Prince of Tides and The Bridges of Madison County. A moving, and fast-moving, fable compounded about equally of tenderness, apothegms, doggerel, endearments, and mush. The ending, which makes nonsense of Matt's departure, suggests how severely Matt may have understated the case in warning that "there will be parts that may be hard for you to read."
Rating: Summary: this book is awful Review: I think this is probably one of the worst books I have ever read. I found myself rolling my eyes as I was reading. The dialogue is totally unbelievable, do people really talk like this? If I could have given it no stars I would have.
Rating: Summary: James Patterson painted rather than wrote this novel...... Review: his artistic brush takes us through the deep purple hue of deceit and heartbreak, the golden sunrise of love, the rainbow of motherly devotion, and the umbrish-black of sadness and despair. As Katie sits and reads the diary given to her by Matt after he has told her he cannot ever see her again; our journey begins with her and together we weave our way through "Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas". James Patterson has written many a mystery and although this is a story of lost love, there is a mystery of a different kind to be solved. And as the bright silk ribbon of words in which it is wrapped begins to unravel before our eyes, each and every page pulls our emotions in all directions. There just is no putting it down..one word, one page, one chapter leads inexcorably to the next ....it is as though we are being pushed to the shore of understanding by a mountain of a white cappped incoming wave. I laughed..I was warmed through and through by the love of Suzanne for Nicholas and for all of life..I despaired with Katie...my heart twisted in pain for Matt...and in the end, which came all too soon, I cried...and cried...and cried. It has been a very long time since the written word has evoked such emotions in me...and these beautifully written words and the story they tell, will never be forgotten by this reader. Maybe some of you can understand this...but I even loved the very FEEL of the book in my hands...it's silken cover and the paper with it's rough-hewn edges. Just to hold it as I read it and even when I finished was a joy in itself. Be good to yourself....give yourself a gift...read this book.
